I remember actually making the radio out of real crystals! None of current components, e.g. diodes, capacitors. resistors, etc. It is just a coiled wire, a pin to search for the right spot on the crystal, and wires for ground and antennae. Of course a wwII headphone. That was 60 years ago!
Have you considered complementing it using a joule-thief circuit to increase current/voltage?
