Your method doesn't seem to allow for expansion of the wood across the grain, most breadboard "makes" use round pins in oblong holes.
The device is $259.00, this Instructable is practically an infomercial.
The video was not posted when I made my comment, and I rarely view videos, I prefer a few still photos with captions. No voice over and no warning about the capacitor.

Seems to be some steps missing, if you peel your spuds you don't need to obsess so hard about getting every little bit of dirt off the peels (peelings go to the compost bin, OK?). I prefer to hand mash or rice the cooked spuds but the hand mixer is OK, just don't over whip or you get glue. And add a bit of butter and milk/half and half/cream unless your wife is lactose intolerant, then chicken stock or even a little of the potato water will make whipping/mashing easier, adding roasted garlic or fresh chives is nice, too. Just don't overdo the liquid or the beating.
Some critters like the dark moist confines, I've found hornet/wasp critters in my DIY water reservoirs, maybe add a piece of screen to the top?
Depending on your climate venting warm moist air to a crawl space is not a good idea and your crawlspace can potentially fill up with nice flammable lint (dryer lint is sometimes used as a firestarter).
