the making a bow from a sapling page should help you. That's the best instruction set for a beginning bowyer. If you want to make a bow out of lumber, let it sit around for a while to let the moisture to get into equilibrium for your area. If you live in a really dry location, you might need to put the wood in a more humid place (basement). Some good board wood is oak. oak is cheap and an ok bow wood. Any hardwood should work. Don't use anything expensive. I have broken quite a few boards. You want as strait of a grain as possible without knots. You can leave the back of the bow flat to save the wood from the tension and save you work. It helps to have a bandsaw and a big rasp/ belt sander. all you really need is a hatchet, a draw knife, a rasp or a large knife. go slow and follow the grain of the wood on the back of the bow. My grandpa gave me two antique draw knives which used to belong to my great grandpa. A new one Costs about $50 at a hardware store and I would never pay that much. That's why I like making bows: they cost little to nothing. I can't imagine how much my antique tools are worth though. I saw a home made draw knife (aka draw shave) on instructables lately actually. Other than that, try yard sales. If you want to make one, let me know and I can send pictures of my draw knives for reference. If You have any more questions, let me know. Eric
