One unsung benefit of chickens in the yard is that they eat bugs. LOTS of bugs. We know people who keep chickens to help with the tick population. The eggs are just a side benefit, which are sold to help feed the chickens.

There seems to be an issue of 'what keeps the bees in the jar'.The solution is to add a mesh cone to the top of the jar. Have the pointing down with a half inch opening. They'll be able to go from wood box into the glass, not from the glass into the box. If you've ever made a home made wasp trap (like this style http://tipnut.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/dfbzd.jpg) then just add the catch basin on the bottom just same for the bees.
