Quality-wise, I agree that this project is lacking, but that is not due to the camera. It's more due to the fact that its remapping the pixels from a 1080p video. But considering the Raspberry Pi camera v2 has better specs than 80% of the smartphones (and probably even gopro clones) and 95% of the webcams on the market, I would far from discourage people using it as a cheap hobby camera. Obviously it won't compare to high-end cameras, but this isn't challenging the high-end market. To say it's useless would be like saying all cars that aren't Aston Martin's are useless. If all you want to do is cut steak, why not use the kitchen knife over the sword?
Really great idea software- and equipment-wise, but not on the hardware side. We have to accept the Raspberry Pi webcam being unsuitable for any photographic use. The maximum it can do is surveillance, video-chatting and picture-recognition, nothing more, and such "RPi-as-your cheap-camera" applications are a misuse. Something like using a kitchen knife in a sword fight.I'd rather try this with an actual camera, like a non-fully-garbage GoPro clone from Aliexpress at least, or with a quality webcam (if such thing exists) you could even use with the Pi.
