Red oak is by far the cheapest. Don't be tempted by Poplar; though it's cheap it's not dense enough unless you want a 20 pound pull.

Red Oak, American Ash, Lemonwood, Cherry, Black Walnut, Osage Orange, Yew, Black Locust, Hickory, and pretty much any other wood that has a very large amount of dark heartwood and a very small amount of the lighter sapwood.
