I'm not sure if you can use a Raspberry Pi for this. I think the firmware was designed to run on an AVR chip. The green boards are the motor drivers that use the standard Pololu style stepsticks to interface with an Arduino. However wiring the Arduino with was pretty messy. I have since made an integrated controller that is available for sale on Tindie - https://www.tindie.com/products/classbp/motionpro-31-axis-cnc-controller. This combines an Arduino with 4 motor drivers on one board.
Unlikely. With that kind of power you actually might see marked burnt edges. MDF will surely require multiple passes. Also the 6W laser will need better cooling than the one here.

Well done. I noticed the sag in the middle and resulting 'bobbing' effect on the recorded film is unavoidable due to the rods that simply cannot withstand the camera weight without sagging. A DSLR is just way too heavy for these. What you could do is use either a T-slot or a V-slot extrusions as the rails on which the camera mount can slide using bearings or delrin wheels. The camera mount can move back and forth using a lead screw attached to one motor which would do away with the other motor and the belts. This I think would be far more steady and balanced since all the weight is distributed over two strong aluminium extrusions that do not bend.
Awesome build. I didn't read through the text mostly because the photos were detailed enough and did all the talking. Can the Kreg tools be used with screws that are not Kreg?
Including the laser it costed about $400. It would cost more if you bought the laser driver separately. The maximum area would depend on the aluminium extrusions. I'm not very sure but I think 1 meter is the maximum length they come in which is just a little more than 3 feet. However, the engrave area would be a little less than this.
There is only one sense resistor. I think it was 68mR. You can change this to get higher current limits. The 1206 was an added footprint in parallel with the 0805 one since sometimes these resistors are available in only either packages. Do not place two sense resistors. There is only one of them based on the package that is available when you are building it.

Awesome project. I wonder if a regular drill could be accommodated with some additions/adjustments. Perhaps extending the base behind the vertical columns for better stability and adding another vertical column parallel to the existing one to take on the added weight and vibrations. Maybe even substitute the PVC pipes with steel ones.

Most 'drawings' have positional coordinates embedded in them and the software reads and then represents them in a graphical form. Gcode too is another way to represent positional coordinates which is the defacto standard for most precision positional machines.
