I also have gone to various worksite over the years only to find drawers full of broken and dull bits. Using two hex nuts side by side I always found to be the best way to let them check the angle. However perhaps JUDT as important I have also found that people get the angle right but do not remove enough material on the back side of the bit. The sharp edge needs to be the highest point that rides on the material to be cut. The back edge needs to low enough to clear the cut chip. You always know your angle and clearance is good when cutting metal particularly and a curly strip is seen continuous from the cut material
