This is a great project for those wanting to learn about chaotic electronic circuits. Build the circuit out of real components or simulate it using one of the SPICE simulators. Either way, the circuit is practically foolproof. Any common general purpose NPN transistors (such as the 2N3904, 2N2222, or 2N2222A) will work fine although you may have to "tweak" some of the other component values a bit to get the same strange attractors that the author did. Remember, SPICE models are never perfect and the properties of real transistors vary slightly from one to another. That's why you sometimes have to "tweak" resistor and capacitor values.
