It probably isn't quite exactly a short circuit, given that the graphite has a little teensy bit of resistance (taking a value of around 30 ohms for a 6cm 0.7mm mechanical pencil lead, perhaps a rough estimate would be 1-5 ohms, judging from the current and voltage stated above). But it's true that lipo batteries are not toys; maybe a safer option/improvement would be a bunch of supercapacitors wired in series.Battery aside, I'm also wondering about the quality of the solder joints - seems to me that the joints wouldn't be particularly strong, but I don't have enough experience to judge based on the videos.
