I do love galvanized pipe for ultra sturdy projects. I did not make this - but likely will. However, I made pot racks for the side of a cabinet with S hooks. If you want the pipes to be a different color, clean them with tri-sodium phosphate which will strip the oils sufficiently to paint them with a good paint. Then apply the spray paint in thin layers.
For some woodworking projects (like a deck), in the "leave it" category, I would use a sawzall (reciprocating saw) to get between the boards and cut the screw allowing me to separate the materials. This was my "last resort" go to.
