Love it !! I've got me 5 barrels and can't wait to get started. How did you determine the size of the wicking hole/area? I saw another design, basically the same using the rubbermaid containers and a filter basket from the water garden supplies were used. In either case how do you determine the size of the wicking area, so you get enough water but not too much?
Thanks! That's a really good question. The way I originally determined the size was I had a piece of PVC drain pipe that size and cut the hole to match. When I started making the "basket" out of the barrel sides I just kept the demensions the same. So I'm essentially saying, "I have no idea." I think there is a minimum size, but not sure about the maximum size or whether bigger changes the rate water moves up into the dirt. I think it's more important that the plant roots tap down into the wet dirt than the water reach the plants. I will say the "earth barrels" seem to be working great and we are already eating brocolli and lettuce, the beans, cukes, and squash have sprouted and are growing, and all seems to be working great. Sorry I can't be more helpful. Kent

You probably want to upload an image to your profile. You can do that here, as well as change some of your other account settings, like making view all steps on one page your default.
