Build a Wooden Mug From Scraps!
Good for you. Even us old dogs can learn new tricks sometimes. Any completed project is a good project. As far as making nicely shaped firewood, I have done that a few times as well
you are welcome. I wish I had thought of it last year

That's a good idea. I'm always trying to find a way to hide screws
That would work as well. I had intended for this 'ible to be built out of old stuff I had collected over the years thinking many people probably have their own junk pails and the bolts do work well.
I couldn't taste mineral oil at all but the beeswax does give a very slight hint of honey. I think the beeswax seals the wood enough that water doesn't get into it
now that I think about it, there is a lot of pressure in the press ;) I don't think you would be able to drive out hinge pins. If the top wa ls bolted together horizontally, unbolting would allow hinges at the bottom to work
I'm sure something like that would work, I just didn't have hinges in my junk pail

Lol looks good but i bet your neighbors give you dirty looks
it really is well thought out
I do want to get a lathe at some point but I need a bigger shop for that. Thank you for the compliments and good luck with your hobby. Many times when I am trying something new I use scrap wood to build a prototype first then I make the good one. Turning Christmas tree trunks is a good idea for reusing them
that was my thought. This is a much cheaper way to see if I liked it
If you get one you will notice that the pins in the headstock are not very big. As long as you don't try to go too fast it will work but the pins can slip. It is a taste of what a proper lathe can do so that's why I thought I would try it
http://www.busybeetools.com/products/lathe-attachment-for-drill-press.html This is one I have. It was on sale when I bought it. It says you can go up to 6" diameter wood but it really only works well for 3" and under
I haven't lit a log yet so I'm not sure about the smoke. It should be about the same as a fire log.ypu buy from Walmart, etc. As far as creosote goes, I don't have anything here like that, just raw wood.
An angle may help. Sanding the plywood sides may too. The bolts that I added in the end really help. Just some light tapping tapping with a hammer and the log comes right out
Yes that's right. When it is laying flat, the outside ring is the handle and the pin only goes through the handle and halfway into the next ring. When you glue the pin in, the rings are tight enough the the pin won't pop out and only the center part and the small section of the handle that was cut off is glued down to the base
