The coinage reform of 1816 created gold the only normal. The guinea of 21 shillings was superseded by the sovereign of twenty shillings, however the previous survived as a money of account until finally decimalization in 1971. Valued at one pound and at ten shillings respectively, the sovereign and its fraction, the 50 % sovereign, thereafter became the fundamental models of Britainâs gold coinage.
