Yes - the mirror is a very thin film of mylar. Just make sure you have it facing down rather than up!
Quite possibly - they can be defocused so that might work. I'd be surprised if they were actually 5 mW, though - they're bright, but no more so than standard laser pointers. A 5 mW laser makes it hard to look at the dot, and these aren't at that level of brightness. I take the advertised rating with a hefty grain of salt.

Thanks. No - the ecig has a safety cut-out at 10 seconds. So you need to release and hold again. Good idea to keep an eye on fluid levels though - you don't want to dry-run it.
I did miss the fan, but the laser modules are there. Buy 2 packs of 10 - I found quite a few (20%?) to be duds. I will update the fan later today.

lukeuser is correct. Their focus is pretty terrible so I suspect the spot size is pretty large even at a few hundred ft.

No fog means the beams are not visible. Unless of course you're using a really powerful laser, in which case you can't swing it around safely and the length (for practical purposes) will appear infinite.

The funny thing is, I thought exactly like you until one day I went to the supermarket and they had no ground meat. I turned my nose up at the frozen ones, as hipsters are wont to do, but eventually my desire for a burger outweighed my snobbery. Best patties I'd ever made. Have never bothered to make another one myself. I think the bad reputation comes from "oh, they're frozen, better cook the **** out of them". Cook them properly and they're great.
There is a similar disconnect between the number of daily views the "Launch Stats" window gives you and the extent to which the view count increments. My best guess is that the referrers/stats give you number of unique visitors to your instructable, but the view count includes every "next step" click as an additional view.
Yes, I only did the edges. Probably should have done the back too but I was in a massive hurry. No signs of peeling of the poster - that glue is pretty effective. 3/4" plywood. Note the main error I made was using a piece of plywood that had been stored outside in humid conditions. When it dried (weeks), it warped. I strongly suggest storing the plywood flat inside before posterizing it.

Nice. Love these things. A few questions: what were the spacings (top and bottom gaps) that you ended up optimizing to? Might be a good starting point for those who might like to make one. Any difference between steel vs. aluminum rulers (noise?)? Did you consider using a receptacle timer to auto-limit it to a few minutes?

odd. If a big TinkerCad file works, it might be something about the stl format 123D Make doesn't like. Perhaps try opening the stl in another program (Meshmixer I used to trim the Terrain2STL files) and resaving?Note: 123D Make is very buggy - Autodesk stopped supporting it soon after launch, and its functionality is supposedly going to appear in Fusion360 in due course. I will update this project when it does.

Thanks. Those are in fact all the files I have; I think I must have saved over the Group 2 ones (I was pretty seriously sleep-deprived at the time, I'm frankly surprised only one set is missing). I no longer have access to Illustrator as I have left Pier 9 so can't remake it. However - they're easy to edit - just redo the text for Group 18, referring to any online PT for the correct atomic numbers, symbols and names.
these are prime but they only have one in stock. As far as I can tell from the photos (and my own experience of buying multiple batches), they're all the same.

I'm sure the site would love it if authors did this, but yes, it's tough to enforce - there is not much motivation for authors to continue to maintain a project. I'm not really sure why I do it, to be honest! I've previously suggested that the site sends authors emails on the anniversary of the publication of an instructable, saying how many views/favorites/comments have happened in the last year. This would perhaps act as a gentle reminder that their project has a life beyond the initial burst of action following publication, as well as perhaps encouragement to check out and address the comments.More proactively, well-maintained instructables could be rewarded with re-featuring. I'm not going to cut into my ceiling either - they're solid wood. It will be more of a ceiling-mounted box. But yes, the transformer can be wired directly into the home supply like any light fitting.

Often the reactive metals are put in oil to prevent oxidation. Lithium has such low density it floats but the rest will just sink
actually, you already kind of see it. The glass acts as an extra reflective layer, so you get additional faint widely spaced rings. It isn't nearly as effective as having the mirrors close, because of how far apart the rings are - you lose most of the infinity impression as they're discontinuous
