  • Automated Solar Hot Water Power Shower using Black Plastic Pipes

I'm not 100% convinced on this one as -having been trained in solar installation the unit should be either stainless steel or copper tubing with compression joints made of brass compression fitting with brass olives (not copper). Plastic piping, welded or compression fittings should not be used nor should solder joints (braised joints acceptable) -this is because the heat and pressure in the pipe work will exceed the heat and pressure margins for pipes constructed with plastic or solder connections. As an example a polybutene pipe rated at 10 bar at 20°c is reduced in pressure capability to 1 bar at 80°c and further reductions at higher temperature, Surprisingly a solar heater on a roof in a temperate zone could easily exceed 100°c -yes above boiling point due to pressuri...see more »I'm not 100% convinced on this one as -having been trained in solar installation the unit should be either stainless steel or copper tubing with compression joints made of brass compression fitting with brass olives (not copper). So I would suggest that even though the system cannot have pressure above one atmosphere the pipe work needs to be copper -either line pipe 8 mm or 10 mm (micro bore) with the above mentioned compression fittings with the advantage of reduced number of joints (8-10 mm pipe is available in lengths up to 50 metres and can easily be bent with a cheap small diameter bending tool.) or larger 15 mm with bend compression fittings. An alternative is use of the cooling fins of redundant freezers but connection may well have to be braised.
