    Nixie Tube Geiger Counter

With the kind of radioactive materials you can easily get not very far. The second video shows a demonstration - the marbles have to be pretty much right up next to it. You may be better off buying a geiger counter or geiger counter kit from the internets that can be modified to suit your purposes, though really, the kind of materials that can be safely handled won't give readings very far even to a sensitive instrument.
