A bit delayed answer, but in case it helps: First triple-check D-S pinout. Floating (non-connected) gate can also be problematic. It is high-impedance and can turn the FET on by itself unless it's pulled low. Try something like a 10k resistor between G-S to keep it low when it's not driven high. Normal transistors don't have this issue since they need current to turn on.
