That is correct, I forgot about that, I have also tried with Cobalt Chloride, it gives a true chrome appearance, the aluminum works as a power source of sorts, like a electrolytic cell battery, it provides the negative charge(cathode) and the positive charge comes from the nickel electrolyte this will be true for most metal electrolytes like copper, cobalt, nickel and maybe their mixture to form alloy but I have not tested that yet.
Tap Water and at least 50 mg per litter is need it
Nickel Chloride is not that expensive and you dont really need to be that pure 98% and up is enough, here from amazon B00T3OTRNU for about $11 on 100 grams.
Nickel Sulfate will have no effect on activating the aluminum base.. Chloride ions from the nickel chloride will and that is why this works.
Hydrochloric acid will eat up the aluminum foil so fast it will not allow any good plate.
Yes, of course, even if you plan on playing again, it may have a different tone but playable.
Nice thanks for posting your research and results on the old but not forgotten "Contact Plating" method.. much appreciated.
Yes, same principle, I have done it on brass, copper, iron, silver and pewter
Yes, you can tin plate using the contact plating process, you may want to check my tin plating instructable using the same process

I believe this will also work for your needs, you can also put a final coat of scratch resistant cleat coat to make it more durable, I am also working on a process for Electroless Nickel plating on plastics using a very simmilar kit, stay tune because by the end of the year at the latest I should have completed the kit and post how to hereñ
I keep ordering their wetting agent, never found a substitute or a formula for such.
On my early works, I based my work on a diluted(half strength) of Tollens reagent chemicals, wetting agent from Angel Gilding, this could be avoided if you use a propane/butane plasma treatment, but I never got the nerve to put a open flame near plastic items.
Beautifully done, I've been able to do the same without power(electroless plating) on the same quarters, I will post a how to when I get the chance.
I have found a way to nickel plate pennies without electricity and very easy, I will be posting this how to very soon.
I am also working on a "Spray On Nickel" process that will apply real Nickel to plastics.
Nice, I hope all goes well, please don't forget to get the wetting agent and make sure it covers all of the pieces.
If you are getting the items directly from Angel Gilding, you will find that they carry the gold tint and chrome tint concentrates for the clear coat.
Brass is an alloy and while electroplating brass has been achieved with commercial kits, it's rather difficult with simple instructables, but check this page, it may help you, banjohangout.org/archive/173409
I will be posting something really exciting soon, a way to copper plate a U.S Quarter without electricity, very simple and nice school science project.
Yes, it would as long as its kept in contact with a steel plate that is at least as large as the PCB.
Please dont try to make your own silver nitrate, you can buy the basic chemicals, try to read the Tollens reagent chemicals
