You can fix that issue by either cutting (top layer only, the layer on the inside of the concentrator) or pre-scoring along the ribs. Also, once you have the curve right, you can glue a second curved sheet on the back of the concentrator. This will hold the shape without the string, and provide additional strength.
Instead of cutting circles go get paper plates. Those cheap thin flimsy ones that don't cost very much, the kind you have to stack if you want to use them for food.

Never assume any electrical modification to be completely safe. See this for a cautionary tale:Yes, this is for much higher voltages (though the ones being dealt with in this instructable are lethal enough), but that isn't the point. Their near fatal mistake was they changed something, and assumed everything else was constant. Someone below suggested to use glue to increase safety. Except ... some epoxies are conductive. And glues do fail, what then? You are also putting more weight on the sockets than they are designed for. How will that play out in the long run? And oh ... lets not forget ... coats can often be ... WET! Do yourself and your child a favor. Go get a standard issue coat hanger.

The battery body might short with the foil, depending on what it is made of. This Rayovac one is metal, but has paint on it, so probably somewhat insulating. But it might still be providing a high resistance connection between the ends.
