I wouldnt have thought this would work in a tin, seeing as my Garmin Nuvi40 doesnt pick up signal under the corrugated iron roof in my garage.Perhaps its getting signal through the led display, in which case a non metallic back should increase the performance considerably.

Thanks, I havent used it yet, but thought I'd make one before its needed.
No, propane generally needs metered air at the tip. If you can find a propane jet that will fit, it should work.

Use automotive anti-freeze, the ingredients are usually kind to aluminium and older copper core radiators, but check the bottle to make sure. You dont need a strong solution, just something unliveable for algae, 5% maybe. The antifreeze doesnt evaporate, so you just top up with water, try to use filtered water instead of straight from the tap.
Not a whole lot of heat off a 5watt led light. Its since been upgraded to a chromed plastic reflector found in one of those garden night lights.
Thanks.Already thinking of a polished slice of the bottom of an aerosol can, lots of light hotspots off the foil.
Added a slice off the bottom of a ladies deo can with hotmelt glue, but its still a rather shallow surface and reflects more downward than outward.Something like a 20mm dia ball bearing mounted halfway in the upper wood surface could work better... but if it drops, its going to land smack on the led to the gentle refrains of "bye bye Dolly" in the background. :)
Found an oak branch, chopped off most of the bark and outer layer, still looks a bit "half round" but it will have to do. :) I used a 5w star led mounted on a heatsink and 3mm brass brazing rods to support the slices.I also sliced a piece off a ping pong ball and covered it with aluminium foil for the top reflector, same trick on the inside of the holes of the top 4 slices, figured it would reflect some more light.Im happy with the way it turned out, thanks for the creative inspiration.
The literoflite ones use a small solar panel to charge up a battery which then powers the bulb at nite.If you look carefully you can see the water level at the halfway mark, so they are using water as a light diffuser. The tube bit is most likely insulating the bulb wires that run down in the water to stop corrosion which could change the water clarity. This version is a daytime only one with no batteries, solar panels or bulbs.Just in case you were still wondering. :)
Segmented Log Lamp
Placement of what? The subsequent plastic cutout is placed at the initial contact point of the threaded rod.
Looks good, great attention to detail, you did well.I would have liked to see a pic at nite of the underbody lighting, cool idea. :)
You can give yourself a pat on the back for sorting out what is commonly called a "basket case". :)Appreciate the feedback, thanks.
Epic first instructable, congrats. :)

This concept works well in many situations, back in '85 when doing an engine swop this was my only option.I cut down 3 trees, lashed them together with rope and slung a 2 ton block and tackle from the top, rolled the car back and forth as needed.
