The 5v pin can be used as either an input or an output. Connecting the 5v pin to the +5v breadboard rail is good practice, if for no other reason than to be sure you will be able to connect more than one component to +5v if needed. It's not used in this circuit. (If you're powering the board via the 5v pin, connect the pin to the +5v rail anyway, and connect your +5v input to the +5v rail.)

Nitecore batteries are longer than the standard 18650. They don't fit in some of my electronics. The capacity is good, but it's cheating to compare them to other 18650s.
A warning about aloe vera gel: I've read that when it's processed, it's easy to mishandle it and render it ineffective, for example by overheating it. I've also seen aloe vera gel with that's mostly water and dye. So if you get burned a lot and don't have a brand that works well, you might want to buy a plant.

To slow down cure, try isopropyl alcohol instead of denatured, since it evaporates slower. I don't know whether it works for French polish, though. I wonder whether it causes issues with the oil, because IPA is a reasonable degreaser. Don't buy it from a pharmacy, because it normally has 10-30% water when sold as rubbing alcohol. Many hardware stores have 99+% purity.
