a tip i came across a few years ago was to cut the base out instead of the top to scopp all the guts of the pumpkin out. this will give your pumpkin a stable base to stand upright if its cockeyed. As well you can grab part of the stem to help you move it. with cutting the top out you have to keep it while on display but if you cut the bottom you can throw it away with allthe other excess pumpkin parts. if you put an open flame tea light like I do to get the traditional effect you have to drill a small hole on the back side of the pumpkin by the stem to let the heat dissapate. that hole you can only see if you are standing right next to it so it will be practically invisible to people walking by.
