I used fimo, if you don't bake it, it will stay soft, and the beads would probably loose shape over time. There is air drying clay, you can make beads with it too, I haven't tried the method I'm describing here with this kind of clay, you would have to experiment.
I put paper on the inside, on all the pieces, this makes the bag sturdier and protects the cardboard, but of course you could also use fabric.

The dyes I used (Identity store water based dyes) stay bright and don't fade over time. The only leather finish I use is a 100% natural beeswax.
