Mine was much cheaper than $40. The temperature controller was $11 shipped on ebay, and I got the outlet for just over a dollar on amazon. I had wire and plenty of c13 power cords around. I just cut the end off of one and skipped the c14 receptacle. I also used a plastic container that came with sliced ham, but I plan on upgrading to something else when I come across the perfect container. My only gripe is the temperature seems to fluctuate a little more than I'd like- for instance if I set it at 129, it'll sit between 127-132. Still very cool and works really well.
