I know you've been around for a while, but I realized I never said hello. Thanks for sharing your projects, and welcome to Instructables! Let me know if you have any questions.
Try using the an igniter fron an old RV refrigerator. The length of the wire to the electrode is not important, but, check the resistance in the wire you use as it will affect your spark at the end.
