Introduction: Rubber Band Power Car

In this instructable i am going to show you how to make a rubber band powered car. I had a look at the rubber band contest and thought what is a unique item to make for it, so here it is. i hope that you can make this instructable.

Step 1: Tools

  • knife
  • super glue
  • pencil
  • ruler
  • wire snips
  • paint
  • paint brush

Step 2: Parts

  • 1 washer
  • a hollow tube that fits snugly inside the hole in the washer
  • 100 by 40 by 2 balsa wood x2
  • rubber bands
  • plank of 2 by 40 to how much you need
  • 4 buttons

Step 3: Car Body (sides)

Get the 100 by 40 by 2 balsa wood x2 pieces and place the washers so that the hole in the washer is just fully covered by the balsa wood. The front wheel goes 15mm from the front of the car, the back one goes 10mm from the back of the car. Draw a circle around the washer. cut that out. Keep widening the hole till the washers just fit in the gap.

Step 4: Shaping the Sides of the Body

Draw a design for the car like the one above. Then simply cut them out.

Step 5: The Front Windsheild

Measure the front windshield. Then get another piece of balsa wood cut to the dimensions of your windshield then super glue it onto the front windshield slot.

Step 6: Roof

Measure the roof. Then get another piece of balsa wood cut to the dimensions of your roof then super glue it onto the roof slot.

Step 7: Rear Windshield

Measure the rear windshield. Then get another piece of balsa wood cut to the dimensions of your windshield then super glue it onto the rear windshield slot.

Step 8: Bonnet

Measure the bonnet. Then get another piece of balsa wood cut to the dimensions of your bonnet then super glue it onto the bonnet slot.

Step 9: Front of the Car

Measure the front of the car. Then get another piece of balsa wood cut to the dimensions of the front of the car then super glue it onto the front of the car.

Don't be afraid to make it in more than one piece of wood like me.

Step 10: Rear of the Car

Measure the rear of the car. Then get another piece of balsa wood cut to the dimensions of the rear of the car then super glue it onto the rear of the car.

Step 11: Under the Car (part 1)

flip the car over and at the front and back place a piece of balsa to make it stronger. glue these with super glue.

Step 12: Wheels (part 1)

find a light weight alternative to the washers i used buttons

Step 13: Wheel Guards

these are just a plank of wood where the bands get glued onto.

Step 14: Wheels (part 2)

cut the tube into two 3 cm pieces and glue the wheels to either end.

Step 15: Wheels (part 3)

in the middle of the tube drill a small hole place the rubber band inside the tube and place a pin in between the rubber band. then twist the pin to keep it in place.

Step 16: Inserting the Wheels

Glue the rubber band to the outside of the wheel guards so the wheels are beneath the car. like above.

Step 17: Under the Car (part 2)

the center of the car is still fragile so lets fix it. flip the car over in the middle place a piece of balsa to make it stronger. glue this in with super glue.

Step 18: Time to Paint

the car can be painted any color combination my car is red with a white racing stripe down the middle.

Step 19: If the Wheels Don't Make the Car Go Vroom

If the wheels have no grip on the ground do this.

get some thin wire from a paper clip or some thing similar and make the wheel into an octagon like above.

Step 20: Twist Up the Wheels and Let It Run

this is the end of my instructable i hope you like it and have a good day.
