18650 iPod Touch 7805 Charger Answered

If I had 2 18650 batteries (3.7V each in series = 7.4V) could I use a 7805 and a female usb connector to make a cheap iPod charger (iPod Touch)? I know that the 7805 will provide 5V @ 1A but is it efficient enough to charge the battery up a good amount? The last one I made I used a 9V battery (big mistake) but it just drained the ipod battery :( My question is do 18650 batteries provide enough current to charge an iPod Touch?

You can, but you need resistors across the data pins to tell the ipod to charge. 18650 provides PLENTY of juice.

I would also recommend trying out a mintyboost circuit bump the 3.7 up to 5 volts.  That way, you're not burning 30% of your energy (2.4 of the 7.4 volts) off as heat in the regulator.  Then you could run the 2 18650's in parallel to have longer run time.

I would be careful of putting random charges through your ipod. It happened to me and I bricked my ipod so bad Apple had a hard time fixing it.
