3D Printed Mold? Answered

Hi Mike!

Of course my question is about 3D printing. Have you done a printed mold for concrete before? I'm assuming you'll see layer lines unless it's smoothed beforehand, but I'm mostly concerned about the concrete sticking to the PLA.

Hey Dan! The print resolution will definitely impact how easy the concrete will come out of the mold. If you're 3D printing then you could make the mold in sections so it comes apart easily.

Of course, making the print resolution smooth by filling and sanding will help, and make sure to use plenty of mold release agent to make things slippery.

I wouldn't think PLA a problem, but I've definitely seen ABS work (in the form of LEGO mold, below).

Either way, I think a little sanding would help with both of the issues you mentioned.
