Exothermic Windshield Defroster? Suggestions for a device to de-ice?

Thinking about how to make a device that will automatically defrost my car windscreen about half an hour or so before I get in the car. I'm pretty sure the huge power consumption of heating elements disqualifies them from this project since it'll be battery powered and I don't much want to fill my car with batteries! The second idea was to use a homemade burning laser, but I think that was just my evil scientist side popping up and was easily pushed down with arguments such as "it'll be way to complicated" and "it might blind someone". My next idea was to use some kind of exothermic reaction and pass the heat on to the windshield either by direct contact or through some convection heat sink/fan combo.  My questions: 1) Does this sound remotely feasible? If not, any better ideas? 2) What reactants would be suitable? The reaction has to produce enough heat over a long enough period to warm up and defrost at least a decent chunk of the windscreen without cracking the glass in the process (I know military MRE's produce heat enough to cook with for about 12 mins). Also the fewer messy reaction products the better (no filling my car up with poisonous gasses please!) 3) Has this been attempted anywhere else? Do you have details or a link? (couldn't find anything after a quick google search) 4) Why didn't my question appear after I tried to post it the first time? Does it have to be moderated first and am I going to look a bit  silly when the question appears twice tomorrow? Thanks!

It's alive! Alive!

I've been wanting to build a Stargate helmet for a very long time but there was no way I could spend the cash to sculpt one in clay and do a fiberglass casting in a silicone mold so I had to improvise by using cardstock, paper mache and foam. I really wasn't going for screen accuracy as this is intended to be a costume helmet instead of an accurate replica. When I set out to build this I wanted it to be light weight, low cost and most importantly I wanted it to move. I still have quite a bit of work left to do- I still need to add the glowing eyes and do some filling, sanding and detail work plus paint. Watching it move for the first time was just awesome. :) <br>

EXOTHERMIC WINDSHIELD DEFROSTER?

I've been thinking about rigging a device to automatically defrost my car windscreen about half an hour or so before I get in the car. Since it's got to be able to turn itself on while I'm still asleep, it's got to work off batteries. I think that pretty much rules out my first idea of a heating element / fan setup. My next idea was to use some kind of exothermic reaction and either directly transfer that heat to the glass by conduction, or with a similar convection / fan setup as previous. My questions are: 1) Does this sound at all feasible? If not, any better ideas to achieve the same aim? 2) What reactants would be good to use? The spec is: It has to produce a decent amount of heat over a decent enough period to give (at least a decent chunk of) the windscreen a chance to warm up and defrost without cracking the glass in the process. Also the products of the reaction should preferably be non toxic and easy to deal with (no masses of liquid, poison gas etc!) 3) Has anyone heard of anything like this being attempted before that I could sneakily steal?Ta very much.Adam?

Buried at 45 degrees...

As I type, Sir Jimmy Saville is lying in "state" in a golden* coffin in a Leeds hotel. According to his wishes, he will be buried at an angle of 45 in Scarborough, "so that he see the sea". What odd burial wishes do you have? Mine are simple - a cardboard box under an oak or horse-chestnut sapling. BBC Story. Just in case you don't know who Sir Jimmy was. *Golden, but not gold.

What to do with my vacuum motors?

Well here's the deal.  I have 3 working vacuum motors in my basement, waiting to be used for a project. I was all set to build a kick ass hovercraft, but then I realized 2 of the 3 motors are 240v :( I will probably still try to use the one (120v) to make a hovercraft, but I'm really not sure what I could do with the other two.  I'm assuming they wouldn't work well as generators...since they seem to spin at such high RPM.  I'm pretty new to this stuff but I feel like there must be something cool I can do with the motors.  (They are all Ametek motors. The one is a 120v which I successfully wired up and ran off of my outlet. The other two are 240v (50-60 Hz).    Thank you for any help/suggestions.

How could you hack an incandescent light bulb to last longer?

I found a youtube video (can't find it now) that showed how to attach a silicon diode to the cap of a bulb before inserting into the socket. Apparently this reduces the power so the filament burns cooler and lasts for several years in constant use. However the video wasn't very clear, especially for someone like me who knows little about electronics. Could someone do a fool-proof hack instructable? There was also mention of a commercial version which I can't find anywhere. It was a diode-cap combo that you place between the bulb cap and the socket. Or are there any other ideas? It would be timely with all the health concerns over CFLs and the imminent  lack of availability of incandescents! With thanks.

Evidence of Time Travel!

I'm not sure how I managed it, possibly it's a result of running the washing machine, tumble dryer and my coffee machine simultaneously, but I appear to be posting from seven and a quarter hours in the future. Check out the image below for proof... Or maybe it was csharyk's fault?  He's interested in woowoo tech, maybe he pulled me in after something he did elsewhere / elsewhen? Update: it's spreading!  (second image) (I think I'll move this thread to Bugs) (If it's important, I made that screenshot at about 10:13am, UK time)

Hiding ceiling projector

UPDATE! made some progress and have it all set up, its in the finishing touches area now. :) Items used- -12 in AC linear actuator -3 way switch - 4x draw slides - MDF - PVC - ceiling tile - various sizes of wood for frame for the actuator. ______________________________________________________________________________________ I have an idea for my ceiling mounted projector to hide in the ceiling tile and then lower down when a button is pressed. however I have no idea how to execute it. in theory I would need a motor to pull up and lower down the tile that the projector is mounted to and then run the cables down the wall to a switch. but I turn to you instructables to tell me how to make the motor stop when the tile is low enough on the cable and when it rises back into place with the other tiles. Sort of like an automatic window on a car. with the push of a button it goes into place and when the button is pushed again it rises back.?

Safe adhesive/sealant for coating flash drives?

I've sen a few Instructables on modding your USB flash drives, and was plan on modding one of mine. I've ordered some Bullet Bill toys and have an old flash drive ready to go. I figure "liquid electrical tape" would be the best option for filling the gaps and sealing the drive into the toy, but are there any safe cheaper options? I don't know if it's relevant (I know bugger all about electronics), but here's a picture of the flash drive in question:

constructing an a-frame, lean-to roof on a garage

I started framing a lean-to, a-frame roof like a deck (with an a-frame "header" and three joist hangers). The joists are angled at about a 45-degree angle and are perpendicular to the garage (on which I hung the header). There will be two 4x4 posts at the end of the 10'x10' roof. When I looked for advice about this framing style, I found nothing. Is this going to be stable? I designed the roof this way because I have 6' reclaimed cedar fence panels that will run down the roof like shingles. Thanks for your help.

Question about a flyback's polarity Answered

Hello, I am confused with this flyback transformer I have. I have a pulsed DC input on the primary coil (pulses from 0 to 15V) and that creates high voltage in the secondary coil. When I connect that input in the opposite direction (wrong polarity) I don't get high voltage any more. The possible explanation for this is that the primary coil has a diode in series with it. Now, I'm confused by this because I tested if there actually Was a diode in there (by connecting a DC supply and a DC motor, in series with the coil) and the motor always works! (also tested with a halogen light) I put the coil in series with the motor to test if there is a diode inside. If there would be one inside, the motor should not work in one of the two cases, when I switch the pins of the primary coil. So, as the results of the test tell me: there is no diode in series with the primary coil. could it be possible that there is a diode in parallel with the primary coil? If that's not possible, how come the flyback is not working when I connect the polarity incorrectly? Could someone please help me out with this? Thanks, Electorials

RGB LED Driver/Controller Help?

I officially feel inept.  As I am more of a wordsmith than electrician, this should come as no surprise to me.  Anyway, I have 6 RGB LEDs that I am embedding into a DIY background for my aquarium.  I bought RGB, LED strip lights which came with a controller/driver which I have installed in my canopy.  I thought it would be cool to place 5mm RGB lights encased in siliconed capsules in the caves and recesses of my background.  I have already wired and tested the LEDs underwater and all works as planned...individually.  To my question:  I have enough know how to complete the simple circuit with a cell battery, but I want to control the LED's, inexpensively, with some type of knob control (potentiometer??? I have many from an old classroom) so that I can "color-mix."  My research seemed to indicate arduino as my only option.  I'm not really interested in that.  So?  Any thoughts?  A schematic even a dummy like me can follow with six RGB LEDs?? Thanks for the help.  I will be posting the background build once I am through. Sincerely, Eric

Speaker (single) Volume Control

I have a Panasonic home theatre system, standard set up. ( 2 front, 2 rear,1 centre and 1 Sub woofer). Unfortunately, because of the room layout, I'm not able to site any of the speakers in an ideal location. So, I have to make do with the best poss. One of the rear speakers is close to where I sit, the other 3mtrs diagonally opposite. I want to insert some form of volume control into the feed of the adjacent speaker. So that when set the rear speaker volume level there is a better balance between the near and distant speaker. I am unable to access any other wiring or components apart from the speaker feed wire, so it has to be something in line. I tried a dimmer switch (dont laugh) but that attenuated the signal too much, and was barely audible. The speaker is 6 ohm imp and 60wat power input. Any suggestions appreciated, apart from buying a new house!

How can I use xbee to transmit the data from a cat 5 cable? Answered

I want to wirelessly system link me and my friends Xbox.  I believe since it is Xbox I would only need four wires from the cable, the data1 - and +, and data2 - and +.  Is this true?  If so how many xbees would I need?  If not, how could I do this?

Can't save text or divide text into seperate steps when writing an Instructable

Spent most of my 'free' time Saturday trying to write an instructable. I'm in step by step mode. I can add steps. I can title and add pictures to each individual step, but any text I add appears in all steps and doesn't save when I save the instructable. Sounds like maybe a problem with my Internet settings?

Kiteman, out in public...

Dorkbot Anglia is a regular evening of talks and conversations with "people doing strange things with electricity" in the East Anglian area. We are delighted to announce our seventh meeting as the guests of the CSV Media Clubhouse on Thursday 24th November. Entry is free. Thursday 24th November 2011, 7:30-10pm CSV Media Clubhouse, 120 Princes Street, Ipswich, Suffolk, IP1 1RS (About five or ten minute's walk from Ipswich railway station) This time, there's a special guest ... Edit: It was a grand night, lots of folk went home with a determination to try the site, plus a new t-shirt. Even better, Tim Hunkin was in the audience! Afterwards, we speakers and the organisers adjourned to a pub called St Jude's for some excellent beer and, frankly, a rather random conversation.  Some interesting ideas about mixing the concepts of 3d printer and laser-cutter, though...

can i increase wattage by the following way?

I think i can increase wattage by placing three coils in the following way / / / L m n among them 'L' as primary and m,n as secondary so that when electricity is passed through L magnetic lines of force from that coil induces current to 'm'.as electricity passes through 'm' it again sends magnetic lines of force inducing current in 'n'.so that connecting 'm' , 'n' in parallel or series will give me increased wattage

Why is the contest i am trying to enter not allowing me to save the description????

I tried last night and it did not save anything I wrote for each step! I did save what i wrote in a doc file. But it will not let me copy and paste it today. I am running out of time. I tried to start another submission today and it did the same thing! All I have in it are my pictures- no description at all!  I was told there is a bug that is messing things up right now. If it does not get fixed, I will miss the deadline today.
