Does anyone know how to sharpen very dull cuticle nippers without making them worse? Answered

I have several pair of very dull cuticle nippers and hair cutting scissors that could use a fresh edge on them. These are small sharp "plier type" instruments the manicurist uses to remove the excess cuticle from around the nail beds of your fingers and toes.  The 2 pieces do not come apart so I need to sharpen them with the jaws wide open, and the use of a very small sharpening instrument. If anyone has a system that works with the use of hand files or a rotary tool I would like to know how this is done.  I don't have a lot of space to work in so I'm limited to the simpler methods. I've tried a whet stone, that was a disaster, I'd be willing to try this again, as long as I know what I'm doing so I don't make them worse than they were when I started. Any and all suggestions will be appreciated and welcome.  Thanks for helping out.

Do you know any great physics/chemistry projects? Answered

To a upper-high school academic level. I've been just doing a homopolar motor and supercooling water. Nothing very advanced or interesting. Do you guys know any good projects? Pertaining to Chemistry, I've seen most on Instructables and few on kentchem. Pertaining to Physics, blast away! I've done limited projects although I have few bookmarked for later. Answers that can be made at home are appreciated! Additionally, answers that can be made at quickly with a somewhat limited number of materials are also appreciated. Well since answering stopped Top answers were from FoolishSage, The Skinnerz, and gruffalo child. FoolishSage wins because of the amount of projects provided. But these were all great answers.

How can I make LED tea lights remote control ON/OFF?

I want to be able to remotely turn off a bunch of cheap electric LED tea lights.  I have a total of 15 in a room I want to be able to turn ON/OFF with an IR remote but dont have a clue how to start.  They will be situated in votives around the room so they can not be connected together so I think I will need a circuit on each tea light.  I have looked into buying units already made but they are way out of my price range for this project.  Thanks so much for your help.

Why doesn't i'bles.com remember my login status, anymore?

For the last couple of months, I open my bookmark, see that I'm logged in (avatar in the upper right, with the "You, Inbox(0), Shortcuts, Logout" menu.) Then I click on one of the I'bles, and when I get to its page, I'm logged out. This used to be sticky.  What happened? I'm having it happen in IE9 and Firefox 7.0, on WIndows 7, and in Firefox 7.0 on Ubunto 10.04 and Ubunto 11.10. It's irritating.

How would a stronger magnet impact the performance of a speaker, and what impacts the overall quality of a speaker? Answered

Okay, so I had decided to build a sub-woofer for a speech topic for school, and I was wondering what it was that made speakers, or sub-woofers so loud an efficient. Granted, I know mine is far from great, while being made from ply-wood, duct-tape, and everything, but why is it that professionally manufactured speakers are so loud by them-selves with minimal power? I am using the circuits from my Logitech X-240 system, and the sub-woofer is always way louder than that of my home-made speaekr, with a significantly smaller ceramic magnet, it seems. Is it the geometry of the speaker itself, or what? What do manufacturers do in construction which improves the sound, or quality of speakers, and would using a neodymium magnet be better than using ceramic magnets? Any help is appreciated, and thank you in advance.

what can I make out of several hundred meters of red plastic tubing of between 9 and 13mm diameter?

I have about 5 reels, each of around 40+ meters of red plastic tubing.  Each one is a slightly different diameter, ranging from around 9mm to 14mm.  I believe that it was originally intended for the repair of church organs. The question is, what can I possibly make from this stuff?

Comments automatically posting to facebook without checking "post to facebook" box

Anytime I post a comment, it is automatically shared with my facebook profile without the "post to facebook" box being checked. I've even tried checking the box and then unchecking it with no luck. I keep having to delete stuff from my facebook wall to avoid spamming everyone I'm friends with. Some days I get a little chatty.

How to get the right voltages to make a circuit with laser pointer, LDR and motor?

In short, it is for a uni project, and what I would like to do is shine a light (laser or white light) onto a prism that would have a LDR to detect the light and trigger a motor - the motor is attached to the prism to make it spin and refract the light to the next prism for a chain reaction mechanism to happen (I'd have 3 of them operating in a circle, maybe..) What I really need to know is what types of components to buy as there seems to be different kinds of every one, different voltages. (for example, how strong a laser do I need to be detected by the LDR, etc etc...) Don't want to fry anything! Thank you very much for you help! :)

How should I upgrade my PC? Answered

I'd rather a PC than a stupid xbox or ps3 because really PC's are 20x faster 20x better graphics free to play and mostly you can customize it!  Motherboard: P4P800-E ASUS RAM: 2x512mb (1,024mb) DDR400 184 pin 3.41GHz (I know I will get about 4gb later) CPU: Intel Pentium 4, 3.40GHz, 3408MHz Video Card: nVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 ("might" get a new one but I mostly model. not gaming) I don't care about the sound card I use my iPod for music :D So thats my setup in a custom case and what I mainly do is create 3d games in unity 3d and I will definitely get more ram (about 4gb) and really dont need a good graphics card for it but I want to start to use my pc instead of my xbox so maybe sell that and my games and all and buy a graphics card with that cash and I'll be set. so I "think" about 4gb of RAM and a new Graphics card would be perfect but you know I'm 14 know a bunch but not all so could you give me some tips. Oh and I'm running Windows XP Professional. But for now do you think having more RAM would be good for programs such as 3ds max, Maya, Blender, and Unity? currently its sluggish at times and crashes if I have to much.

Any Simmers here?

Just wondering if there are any Sim fans here. I've always liked the sim games, Sim City, Sim Farm, Sim Tower.. you get the idea. When The Sims came out it was only natural to try it and I became hooked. 10 years later and we are now up to Sims 3 and I have all the expansion and stuff packs for Sims, Sims 2 and Sims 3. Currently I'm loving the addition of pets to the mix.

I need to build a special "box" for an alert response system?

I would like to use an Arduino, but a parallax or a Vellman kit, etc would work to... Need usb connectivity for programming...easy i know. But i have a total of 20 momentary switches at different stations. I need one box at a front desk (i'll need to go full custom, laser cut, nice graphics, etc..so if you have a really good reference for front panel production and panel parts..buttons, leds, etc...) I will eventually build 20 of these for each of their locations. but basically here is what is HAS to do... station user presses and releases button LED on front desk box lights up LED stays lite until the button next to the LED is pressed...as in killing the request for help or acknowledging it...no response notification to the station needed. What I would LIKE to have happen... station user presses and releases button system generates a signal to play a recorded audio clip custom for each button "Attention Needed at Repair Bay 1" the LED on the control box lights up for 5 seconds, along with a one or 2 quick (not loud) beep from a pezio speaker like the little tiny ones i have a ton of from pc's etc. after 5 seconds...if not responded to by pressing the control box "response button" by the specific LED, then it will flash for 15 seconds or so and then beep 5 times and do this over and over for 1 minute until responded to, in not after 1 min, either the standard flashing ot a rapid flash starts...until responded to. A Scrolling LED display with the Stations ID (station Name), one after another that are still in the "Que" until responded to.... i need an answer fast....and im putting myself out there...i need is fast like as done weeks ago....this was thrown in my lap at last min and i'm the solution/fix-it/invent-it guy and that is just where i am in this...i am willing to pay what i can to have someone help with this....

Modem with one ethernet port, have two units to plug in?

I have a Motorola SURFboard SB5101U cable modem. It has one Ethernet port and one USB ("square" type) port. I have an Apple Airport Express wireless plugged into the Ethernet port.  Here's the problem.  I want to use "MagicJack Plus" (VoiP) without plugging it into the computer (THE difference from the "regular" MagicJack, that it (the Plus) can be plugged directly into the modem, bypassing the computer, so the computer doesn't have to be left on 24/7 for your phone service).  My question is, can a simple Ethernet (pigtail) splitter be used to plug both the MagicJack Plus and the Apple Airport Express wireless into the modem?  I know this can be "Physically" but is the "signal" degraded in any way to the two units?

need help with understanding an instructable's schematic

I'm not very good at understanding schematics I guess, and am trying to understand the schematic at https://www.instructables.com/image/FT6P10TGTTUHASZ/Assembly.jpg . I've created a rough translation of it at https://www.instructables.com/files/deriv/FQV/10DS/GU2QYOY1/FQV10DSGU2QYOY1.MEDIUM.jpg . Can someone fill in the polarities at the question mark locations and confirm that my interpretation of the wiring intersections is correct please? I'd appreciate any help available. Thanks!?

HELP WITH COMPLETING THIS PROJECT PLEASE

Hi all. I live in Spain, where lack of earthing and other circuit protection for musicians is a real issue (as I am sure it is elsewhere too), especially when playing live when little attention has been paid to such necessities, and where the lack of earthing causes mayhem with the sound, leaving the guitars and mikes dangerously exposed to any electrical faults which might arise. On a recent visit to South America this came to a head for me after a disastrous live gig where I was almost electrocuted, and where the live sound was terrible due to lack of earthing, and I decided to seek help in designing a system for musicians to prevent injury or death.  So after some time spent researching on various online forums, I designed a prototype which I was using during my stay in South America, but I never managed to get beyond that point for lack of materials, and I have the same problem here in Spain. The other problem is that I had to use the materials available to me, which were more suitable to the US systems than the European ones, but that is a minor issue as the circuit breakers are probably the same anyway. However the quality and finish of the materials is questionable.  So what I could do is describe and photograph what I have put together, in the hope that someone will be able to help me find a way to house it all in a compact professional looking container. Please be aware however that it is in a very crude form at present, although it does what it was intended to do - if water enters any of the wiring one circuit breaker cuts the current, and if there is a short, another circuit breaker kicks in. It is basically the same system currently used in buildings for circuit protection, but adapted for portable applications.  Then I have a makeshift earth which connects to the earth lug of the plug adaptor, and this is connected to a metal pipe or tap, or whatever can be found of that nature which runs to ground to provide an earth for the system. This was not always possible, but certainly when it did work it reduced the 50 cycle hum which played havoc with the sound of the audio system and reduced the tingling in the guitar strings enough to be able to play.  Originally, I intended  incorporating this isolating system into a typical guitarist's floor pedal board, but that did not work out because this system is more than a little unwieldy, although I am still up for that idea. I have never tried to do an instructable, but I think that this is vitally important to musicians, and could certainly save lives, and so far I have seen nothing of this nature on the site and feel that it is crucial that someone provides this information. So......anyone interested? I am basically seeking those of you who are more technically skilled than myself, and with more ideas of how to actually fabricate the sytem. It is really pretty basic - what is important is that it should be light, portable and easy to set up quickly. The wires are a problem, because they need to be sufficiently thick to carry the necessary current rating for the equipment connected to the circuit - basically all the band equipment, or at least a guitar rig.  Thanks for your time.

Attic insulation-should I insulate floor to ceiling?

I am in Conn. and the person helping me has said the roof needs to breath. This is a 4th story on a 3 family house. It is A shaped. I plan on covering the insulation after to finish the space off for storage. I think this will keep the 3rd floor warmer. The floor is insulated, but I wanted to do the wall which makeup the pitch of the roof. I have never heard of the roof needing to breathe before. Is this true or can I go ahead and insulate everything?

Legal/moral issue about a contest entry.

I am planning on using a previously made papercraft in one of my upcoming projects for a contest entry. I believe in giving credit where credit is due, and I was going to gain permission to use this papercraft in my project from the original creator.  Unfortunately, the site where it was originally posted, and any potential communication with the creator, has ceased to exist.   I was planning on using this papercraft in a similar fashion quite a few years ago, sent and email, and recieved permission, but because it has been so long, I was going to do it again. Is it alright to use the papercraft (giving credit to the author) in my contest entry?  What should I do?

Title keeps disappearing

The title of this instructable keeps disappearing: https://www.instructables.com/id/Paper-Mache-Jack-o-Lantern/ I have had to go in to the editor and retype it in a few time since it's been published.  It seems to randomly disappear.
