Need Serious Help from those who know about screen printing supplies!!!!

Hello Everyone, it has been some time since I was last on and everyone has always been so helpful. I have a friend who has offered to buy me some screen printing supplies. I would like advice on what to get as there are a number of different options and ranges of "skill level" for lack of a better word. I have been mixing a medium with acrylic paint and hand painting my designs on bags, jackets, etc. I REALLY want to get into "screening." Nothing mega big like my own store or anything, mainly just to sell a few here and there and my friends. T-shirts mainly, just simple designs or text in one or two colors. I don't have any supplies thus far, so any good deals on Kits you could recommend would be great. I'm in an apt and don't have a whole heck of a lot of space to set up a studio as I see some people doing. I just want to make like 10 or 20 shirts at a time and I want high quality materials but not necessarily the best of the best. I just need to know the basics to get me going, any advice on process of screening would be great too, I've read a lot and seen videos but I am always wanting to know more! I hope i make sense in all this, I just want some serious advice. Thanks to all of you in advance.

Tablecloth without a Table

This tablecloth has been stiffened with starch or epoxy or something to keep its shape so that it can stand alone without a table below it.It's pretty fun for a picture, but unless you're right there on the ground like in the main pic below it's not too obvious. Well, maybe it's just not my style, but I'm sure that anyone else here can replicate it if they were interested. So how about it? Want to take it on? First person who does an Instructable about this will get... something. A custom patch and maybe something else. Link via bbgadgets

Observing "weather" (stratospheric temp.) with cosmic rays

An article in New Scientist reports on an analysis of cosmic ray muon data from the MINOS underground detector, which correlates with "sudden" (24-hour timescale) temperature changes in the stratosphere. The original article in Geophysical Research Letters gives you a good flavor for how this kind of analysis is actually done, and written up for publication. The figure below (Figure 3 of the article) shows the beautiful correlation between the temperature (5-day running average in blue) as measured by sounding balloons, and the muon rate in MINOS (also 5-day running average, red band with uncertainties). The alignment of the two curves is obviously not known a priori. The exact numerical calibration between muon counts (red, right scale) and temperature (blue, left scale) is a fitted output of the analysis, not an input. To me, it's just kind of neat that particle physics can relate so sharply to some "real world" large-scale properties.

What is the typical lag between publishing and visibility in "subscribed"?

One of my subscribees published an Instructable overnight (I know, because (a) I'm a collaborator on it, and (b) he e-mailed me).As of this morning, the I'ble still doesn't appear in the "Subscription Activity" section of my profile (.../you/). How long does it normally take for the database to propagate that information?

Surface tension propels tiny boat without sails or moving parts

From the New Scientist:WATCHING Sung Kwon Cho's model boat glide silently across the still water with no propellers or sails, you'd be forgiven for thinking a phantom hand was drawing the vessel forward. The boat is actually being driven by water surface tension, the same force that allows some insects to skate across the surface of a pond. The design is inspired by Pyrrhalta beetle larvae, which also use surface tension to propel themselves. Since it requires no moving parts, the method should be more robust than those involving propellers and may use just a hundredth of the power.Another story on the NetworkWorld site (with a few skeptical comments.)Doesn't look too difficult to replicate, does it?

Vga cable gone wrong

I've tried like 5-6 times to make myself a vga male-to-male cable for this 32" tv I have that I can't do anything but watch noise infested cable with.So I'll skip all the bull****. I'm down to two cables I cut one from an old CRT and one from a non-working LCD monitor. Of course the lcd cable has to be considerably thinner, but the cables inside are relatively the same color.I've used this , and this website for a little bit of reference, along with wikipedia's VGA Connector page. The only bit of useful information I really have is on the wiki page where it says the male connector is just a mirror image, but it still confuses me.So far I have pins 1, 2, and 3 connected together at the cut end of the two cables, as they're the 3 thicker cables inside there. The rest of the cables seemed to be the same color as on the other cable, except that one had a black wire, and one with a red one (these turned out to be the same pin so I wired them together). The rest of the wires I matched together according to color and some of them I've heat shrinked, but I figured I better not waste any on wires I'm unsure about.Sure enough, it does not work, my LCD continues to display no signal, and I'm now wishing I didn't cut apart the first hand made cable I had (I grabbed off a cart at school). But the image quality was crudd, and it turns out it was wired in the cable to 5 coaxial wires, probably causing the quality issue as it wasn't exactly standard. Can someone tell me what the hell I did wrong???? Should it be wired differently instead of just a straight through cable?

Electronics Plastic housing

I have a plastic housing for a VCR with some molded-in markings on the inside. *There is a circle with an arrow inside and two numbers outside. "1207" & "1208" The arrow is pointing to "1207" *There is a circle with an arrow inside and the numbers 0-9 on the outside. The arrow is pointing to "4" *There is a circle with an arrow inside and the numbers 0-3 on the outside. The arrow is pointing to "0" *There is a circle with an arrow inside and the letters A-H on the outside. The arrow is pointing to "B" *There are also two charts that has letters on the left and what looks like names of pigment colors on the right column. Some of the right side fields are blank. *There is another chart with "00", "99", and "98" on the y-axis and the numbers 1-9, 0, and the letters "N" and "D" on the x-axis. There are two markings - one at the intersection of "99" and "1" and another at "99" and "2". Does anybody know what these markings mean? I've seen similar markings on other bits of plastic electronic housing. I imagine that they explain the material that the housing is made of , but what do they mean? Anybody know? Have any ideas?

What do humans *need* to know? (Edited OP)

Without a core set of really basic skills, civilisation is impossible. What do we really, as human beings, need to know in order to maintain a healthy, happy, stable society?I don't mean "how to solder" or "how to change a tyre", but really basic, grass-roots skills. You may be wondering where this question came from, but I was inspired by the Long Now Foundation's concept of future deep-time storage and its Digital Dark-Age Blog. So, let's have your ideas - list skills we need to preserve, in any area of expertise. If you can, provide a reference as well - a link or the name of a book....and maybe we'll inspire a few Instructables as well.Another thing to think about as well - how could we store this information in an enduring, millenia-stable way?I recently voiced my fears to the team involved in The Clock of the Long Now, and they agreed:...I cannot help but think, though, that something is missing. What is missing is hard copy. The Long Viewer and Long Server will only work as long as we are able to maintain power to the computer network that supports them.If humanity loses the ability to generate electricity, these projects will be lost.Even if the loss is short-term, a few years following some global disaster, then there will be a huge loss of information - knowledge and skills will die with those that know them. Those skills - even things as basic as farming and obtaining metals from the raw materials - need to be preserved in a way that will outlast any traditional or foreseeable computer network. It needs to be recorded in a form as unmistakeably monumental as the Pyramids or Stonehenge, but even more durable, and in ways less obscure.Indeed, I picture "the ultimate hard copy" to be henge-like in nature - strong, metres-high slabs of a material such as titanium or a durable glass. Arranged in a spiral or labyrinth pathway, the first slabs will have the most basic skills explained in pictographic forms, images of farming and metalwork, carpentry and building, hunting and weaving, with times of year shown with icons of Sun and Moon.More and more detailed information would be encountered in a variety of languages as people find the need to venture deeper and deeper into the monument.Glassmaking, pottery, medicines, animal husbandry, generating electricity, navigation, brewing and distilling, no skill should be considered too basic to be included, and it would be impossible for a single individual such as myself to even begin to list all the subject areas that would need to be covered, or even to decide what order they should be recorded. What is clear to me, though, is the need for this permanent archive, something that would enable humanity to bring itself back from some unknowable future disaster, at least to the level of being able to preserve and extend life through surgical and chemical techniques, to feed significant populations and to travel and communicate long distances with relative ease and efficiency. It is also clear that there should be more than one of these archives - humans, being only human, could easily go to war to control a single archive, and fate, being fickle, could also ensure that a single archive could be destroyed by whatever catastrophe also reduced humanity to the point of needing its help.RegardsIn reply, they pointed me towards their Digital Dark Age blog, but that is not what I meant - they are talking about saving files. Skills are different, especially the kind of ground-up skills I'm talking about. If I google for "How to Make Iron", what I get are lots of references to "How to make Iron Oxide" and "How to make Iron-on transfers".What I do not get is a clear link to the knowledge I need to be able to turn a pile of brown rocks into metallic iron using only what I can find or make from what I find. Come the comet, though, that's the skill-set I'll need.Amazon is no better at coming up with paper books on the subject.Heretical though it sounds, even this website is not what is needed, simply because it is digital in nature. Come the comet, off goes the power and this entire, wonderful edifice vanishes with the dot on the CRT.Somewhere, somehow, we need to gather these skills into a huge and durable text book. With copies. The questions are, of course, what is stored, where, how, and who pays for it?

Laser Mouse Sub-Rev Tach

I would like to use a laser mouse as a sub-revolution tachometer. I know that a laser mouse can discern 1 part in 1,000. Some can discern 1 part in 2,000. If you print a ribbon with vertical lines and attach it around a disk you could expose the laser to the lines and create a data stream. I have already found a way to increase the USB polling rate in XP from 125 MHZ to as much as 1,000 MHZ. Though I have tried to find information on how to proceed with my idea, I have thus far found little to help me move forward. Is there anyone on this list with ideas that mght help make this project a reality? This could be data acquisition on the cheap. Really cheap. :)

Tips on Welding

This is s a general forum for people to post questions and tips they have found over the time they've spent welding My question/tip is this - I recently had to weld two pieces of oddly shaped steel together. Placement and alignment was important for me but the shapes of the steel pieces made clamping them together a bit of a mission. My solution was to position and hold the pieces of steel using prestik (probably the south african equivalent of U.S. bluetack - maybe chewing gum could work) and then the steel pieces didn't move while I tacked them in place. My question is obviously whether this is a questionable practice because of fumes (I didn't notice any) or weakening of the weld from the prestik inclusion (it seems to be holding quite nicely though and the piece is now the switch activator for a press strip feeder. If you can't think of any problems then its a tip

Obama gives props to "the makers of things"

This isn't a political post - just an observation. I took note of the phrase "makers of things" during Obama's inauguration speech. Go Makers!"In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned. Our journey has never been one of short-cuts or settling for less. It has not been the path for the faint-hearted - for those who prefer leisure over work, or seek only the pleasures of riches and fame. Rather, it has been the risk-takers, the doers, the makers of things - some celebrated but more often men and women obscure in their labor, who have carried us up the long, rugged path towards prosperity and freedom."

Rainbow vac for dremmeling?

Is this a good idea or no? I'm sure a few people on here know what a rainbow vac is, and it has the suction to work (although I try to use the low-speed mode if I can because it's a loud vacuum). I emptied it today however and there was metallic crap EVERYWHERE on the inside of the bowl. It wasn't that bad actually and washed out with water. But I was wondering, should I maybe use something like some dryer vent and make a plate to fit into my window?

I need help dealing with two bullies at my school......

Heya guys, I desperately need help with two bullies at my school. They ain't strong or anything, but they're good with words. Their names are Jocco and Lucas. And lemme tell you, they are such a pain in my arse. Their targets are usually the new kids, like me and my friend, Danny I know it's just best to just ignore them, don't sink to their level and all that, but when they made my friend cry in more then one occasion, that's going too far. Their jokes are mostly sexual and racist, calling me and Danny gay just for being friends, saying that I have a vagina, and even going so far as to say he f'ed my mother. And his racist jokes are usually aimed at Danny, due to him coming from Czech Republic. I need help, and fast. P.S: Not trying to act like a junior gangsta or anything, but please don't tell me to report this to the teacher or something, because if I do, my popularity will drop faster than I can say Barrack Obama. Thanks in advance.

Sculptural Crochet Primer

Here SuperNaturale features a curiosity cabinet of crochet figures, thus illustrating the basic elements which combine to form sculptural crochet.Much like a traditional Wunderkammer, the pieces are divided into subgroups, each of which explores a certain variable.I'm struck by the beauty obtained by using simple stitches and one color to make a striking, strangely biologically-evocative piece of artcraft. It's obviously left me with a loss for words.

Using lenses to create a beam of normal light??

If you had, say, light from a torch or whatever, directed it through a metal pipe or fiber optic to get it kind of directional, and then into some arrangement of lenses; what kind of maximum range could you expect before it completely lost focus? And would it still obey the inverse square law, or is that just for expanding spheres of light?

What accessory or attachment, that doesn't exist today, would you love to see in your dream netbook?

Asus, a sponsor of Instructables, has put together WePC where they are asking for input on their next generation laptops. As part of their sponsorship, they've asked my opinion on various aspects of laptops. Most recently What accessory or attachment, that doesn't exist today, would you love to see in your dream netbook?.Here are two things I would love to have integrated into a netbook: internal power adapter and standard wireless accessories.I don't think anyone really carries a netbook to cafes, on airplanes, or wherever and cavalierly leaves their power adapter at home. Some people don't even leave without their phone's power adapter -- the risk to reward ratio is just too great. So, with lower power consumption and better power management of netbooks, I'd like to see one with an integrated power adapter. It should plug directly into 120 VAC with an integrated cord, or use a standard power adapter cord. Just because people are used to having a separate power adapter, doesn't mean it's the right thing. Once one manufacturer does it, the rest will need to follow suit.A netbook is great for carrying around and working, but eventually most users will take it home or to the office, and want to use any number of accessories that make their work more comforatble: external keyboard and mouse, second monitor, USB headset or microphone, cell phone cable, etc... Both at home and at my office, I have USB hubs setup to handle all the things I need to plug into my laptop. The cables are ugly, collect, dust, and get in the way. I preferentially buy wireless devices when possible, but they still require a USB port for their receivers. My dream netbook would wirelessly pair with my peripherals through Bluetooth or some other standard, leaving my USB ports free for stuff that really needs them. What's your dream accessory? Let me know here, and leave a comment or idea on WePC. If it's good enough, they just might make it...Finally, I'd like to know what you have thought about this Asus campaign. If you would be kind enough to take this survey, I would really appreciate it. Comments here are also good. Thanks!
