Connecting small generators in series?

Hi all,I'd like to make a bunch of small generators, like Pleech turbines, for example. Each one might only be producing a couple volts and however much power. What is the best way to connect them together to get their combined power?I was thinking that I could just give each generator its own rectifier, and then connect everything together in series. Would that be efficient? My circuitry understanding is a little limited, so a simple solution that is 90% efficient may be better than a complicated solution that's 100% efficient.... :)Thanks for any suggestions!

E85 to G15 and E100

Is there some way to remove the gasoline content from E85 to leave denatured ethanol? Is this even legal? I'd like to have some denatured ethanol on hand for my alcohol burner (isopropyl leaves soot), but a gallon can at the hardware store is $13.99. Since E85 is still well under $3.50/gallon, it seems like it would make more sense to remove the stinky, explosive gasoline from E85.

PrankDialer

I just found this site and tested it out... And it works!Basically it's a site that you pick out a prank message, enter a phone number, and in a few minutes or more, the site calls the phone and pranks them with the message you picked out. Some of the prank messages on there would be the RickRoll, Peanut Butter Jelly Time, and 7 days (from the movie The Ring). They claim to not share the numbers at all, and lots of people seem to have used it without any problems either, so I'm considering it safe. I'm going to have some fun with this and my friends over the next few weeks... : D

BATFINK

NOT Ratfink, but Batfink. Has anybody ever seen this show? You know, with Batfink's super sonic sonar radar, his wings of steel that cannot be harmed, evil genius Hugo-a-go-go, his sidekick Karate, the Battillac that looks like a VW-bug and always makes Batfink glad that it has a thermo-nuclear plutonium insulated something, the announcer that always stops right before something horrible will happen to Batfink and asks us what will happen, and the chief. I used to watch it on Boomerang, but they stopped airing it. It's a funny and cool show, made by Hal Seeger.

4 wheeled Quad-Cycle!

Has anybody made or thought about making an Instructable to make a 4 wheeled bike-like a car? I've seen them on the Internet for $3-4000. Thought it would be interesting because of higher gas prices.

Photo hosting recommendations

I have a flickr account, which I use rarely, but it just got snotty at me for going over 200 images - they want me to pay to make them all visible. 200 images? Strikes me as a tad stingy. After all, my image library here has nearly 1300 shots in it. So, can anybody recommend a half-decent image-hosting site that will let you store a lot more images, for free, and is easy to use?

Methane Captured from Cows

So we all know that Cows are killing the planet in that they are producing a huge amount of Methane from their farts. I say we build a massive bubble around the pastures, and we capture the gases, burn them for fuel, and clean up the waste gas as much as possible. The ideal situation would be for people to stop eating beef and using cows all together, but alas steak is tasty. I am aware that they have been treating the cows manure and getting gases from that, which they then burn. However as the cows fart, they punch massive holes in the ozone. To conclude, the cows must die...steak for all, dibs on the ribs...

Lead Free Solder Recommendations

Hello, I am going to be working on some electronics projects soon and was wondering if anyone had recommendations for lead-free solder. Some completed projects are going to be shipped to the EU, California and New York so I need to start paying attention to RoHS standards. I was hoping to get pointed in some sort of direction to avoid buying a dozen different kinds and figuring it out myself. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Knowledge regarding previous experience with lead-free solder and electronics would be awesome. Thanks in advance.

TARC (Team America Rocketry Challenge) 2008

TARC (Team America Rocketry Challenge) is the world's largest rocketry competition. Teams must design, simulate, build, and fly a rocket capable of carrying two raw eggs to 750 feet (no more, no less). The eggs must stay aloft, under a parachute, for precisely 45 seconds. About 700 high school teams compete each year, and the top 100 teams are invited to the finals in Washington DC. My team (#6081) was invited this year. We are a first year team and we finished 13th out of 643 teams. Here' what happened: We woke up bright and early on Saturday to prep the rocket. We put it on the launch pad and declared that it was ready to fly. The rocket zoomed up to 742 feet and stayed aloft for about 41.5 seconds (the goals are 750ft (no more, no less) and 45 seconds (again; no more, no less)). Both raw eggs survived the journey and we were awarded a score of 15.02 (the lower the better). We watched nervously as the other 99 teams launched their rockets. By around 1:30, nearly every team had launched and we were in 7th place! The top 18 teams are required to fly again (the average of the two scores is used to determine the rankings). As we were preparing the rocket, the Stealth B2 Bomber flew overhead - it was spectacular! With the B2 safely out of the way, launching resumed. Our rocket (because the winds suddenly died) flew higher than expected to an altitude of 783 feet and stayed aloft for 44 seconds, giving us a score of around 35. Unfortunately, this score demoted us to 13th place. After the initial disappointment, we were thrilled - our first-year rocketry team had beaten 643 other teams from around the country - we were in the top 2% of rocketry teams all over the United States of America! In addition, because we were one of the top 18 teams, we were invited to attend the NASA Student Launch Initiative (SLI). SLI offers a stipend for a teacher to attend a week long program with NASA focusing on how to integrate hands-on aerospace projects into math and science classrooms. After completion of the program, student rocketry team members are invited to submit a proposal to NASA for a rocket designed to fly one mile high with a scientific payload. If approved by NASA engineers, NASA hires us to build - and fly - our proposed rocket. The entire team is thrilled to have this opportunity! I thought many students who browse this forum might benefit from this post. TARC is an amazing opportunity, and with so many ingenious people on Instructables, the veteran teams will have to fight hard next year!

KublaCon Roleplaying Con this weekend in Burlingame

The sign of a true nerd - Dungeons & Dragons! Are any of the Bay Area locals planning to attend KublaCon - one of the two biggest roleplaying cons in the area? This weekend, May 23-26 - that's Friday afternoon to Monday (Memorial Day) afternoon - in the Hyatt Regency in Burlingame, just South of the SF airport. And no, it's not just D&D - not my personal favorite anyway. There's probably a couple dozen different roleplaying games, plus lots of card games, board games, LARPs, a kid's room, miniatures painting, etc.I'll be there at least one of the four days, maybe two. Let me know if you're planning to be there as well, and maybe we can hang out for a bit...Come check it out: KublaCon !

What did I just do?

If any of you out there who know lots about how the inside of my computer works could tell me what in the world I just did, that would be wonderful! Here's what I did: I clicked Start, clicked run, and typed 'CMD'. Command prompt opened up and I typed 'At (I put the time it would be 1 minute from when I typed it) /interactive "cmd.exe" After the minute went by a new command prompt opened up. I typed 'exit' in the old one. I did ctrl-alt-delete and ended the process 'explorer.exe'. After I killed that I typed 'cd ..' in the command prompt window, then I typed 'explorer.exe' and it opened back up. On my home computer I was signed in as SYSTEM at this point and on the computers in the computer labs at the community college I was logged in as the same user name as before except with a '$' on the end. At this point I appear to have privileges above an admin profile and I can access and edit all sorts of files and things I know an admin can't normally access. I can also do things to profiles, like give them admin privileges. I haven't figured out how to do this without setting the time I want it to start a minute ahead of the time it was when I typed it.... Is it possible? And I know the 'cd ..' brings me up a directory, why am I able to do this with explorer.exe closed? It appears to be a large security hole... I just want to know how/what just happened! Thanks! -DMC

Calculator IM

At my school we are required to have these TI-83 plus calculators for math. Of course we have classic games and stuff that we put on there, but we want to try to put an infrared emitter and detector on it so we could send IM's within the room to each other. Kinda like texting. Could anyone help us by suggesting ways to do this?

Will you sign your username and scan it and post it here...for a super cool avatar? Please?

Hey guys, will everyone who sees this thread sign their username (NOT your real name!) on a sheet of paper and then scan it and save it as a jpg and post it here? I plan to take all the signatures I receive and put them all in one picture. People can use it as an avatar, instructables can use it if they want to for some reason...etc. Please? EDIT: Yay! I have 6 so far. Thanks, everybody! Keep em comin! :D EDIT: 10 signatures counting my own! Including a genuine ibles celebrity's! EDIT: 12 siggies! EDIT: 14! EDIT: 15! EDIT: 18 and counting!! EDIT: 20 including ewilhelm and canida's!!!! EDIT: 24! Can somebody help me get the transparent versions of signatures that have dark backgrounds? ll.13 did his, which helped, but I need help with some of the others. I think you just have to patiently erase all the background away. Right, ll.13? EDIT: 27 at last count, I'm sure it's well over 30 now, they're coming in faster than I can make new ones. So I'll just wait for a bit to make a new version. And of course volunteers who work on the backgrounds are very much appreciated! Thank you very much guys!

OK, Let's clarify some things....

1) OK, I will clarify this after it confused me for so much time. For those of you who didn't know,Eric and canida are marriedI tell you this to help you avoid all the stuff I went through. I saw a lot of things that pointed towards this fact, but nothing actually confirmed it. I didn't have the courage to ask here, if I was wrong, the embarrassment would be too much.... So there. What happened to Stasterisk?Star Simpson is a girl that strapped a fake bomb to her and tried to go through an airport. It was a circuit board with play doh attached to it in certain spots. She is currently a student at MIT, which explains the website url. So if you want to get more of an idea of who this Star Simpson girl is. Check outthis pageAnd this ibles postMy name is BryantAlthough, I think Gorillazmiko made that quite clear. Get over it.

The cover story of WIRED this month has been published online and you can read their 10 "heresies" about the environment. UK Government Wants to Build a Database of Every Phone Call and Email

This just crossed my News ticker this morning: 10:20 AM on Tue May 20 2008By Adam Frucci The plans for the new database are currently being drafted up and may be proposed for inclusion in the draft Communications Bill later this year. While many of the types of politicians you'd expect are behind it, a number of others are, thankfully, vehemently against it. They're against it not because of the basic violation of citizens' privacy that would come from such an action, however. Instead, they point to the UK government's lousy track record with data security as a security threat great than whatever threats they'd be stopping by being able to look up those emails of you flirting with the girl you met at the office Christmas party. It's another really strong argument against giving governments overreaching powers to spy on their citizens.Hopefully, the people of England will get properly angry and vocal against this plan, keeping it from ever becoming a reality. The next step, after all, will be the thought police, and at that point it's really too late. {BBC via Boing Boing }Big Brother IS watching, everywhere......"If you wanted a sure sign that the Orwell-ization of Great Britain is underway, then look no further than this. Lollipop ladies, those kindly old women who man the main roads next to school, similar to the US crossing guard, have been issued with video cameras to record lollipop rage as school-side road rage is known. The cameras, which record traffic coming from both the front and the back, mounted on the lollipop lady's cap, and attached to an Archos portable DVR, have been developed by a British firm, Routesafe. Several local authorities have invested in the technology to counter the increasingly aggressive behavior on British roads."CCTV cameras everywhere

Plant Electricity Generator?!

OK. this is gonna sound very crazy. i remember learning this thing about photosynthesis. there are electron acceptors and donors. during photosynthesis, the electrons are passed on and on. it's like redox reaction. or perhaps it is redox reaction. anyway i came up with a crazy idea of generating electricity from plants. there just might not be enough electrons to do the "work" (to get at least 5V? impossible.). batteries have the + and - terminal. plants have electron acceptors and donors. crazy, eh? what do y'all think?

HELP IDEAS for Mini A/C Unit for Truck

This is an idea that has been tried before with other type equipment & applications. However I think that I have found a way to limit the cost & over size of the application for the use intended. The rubb is that I need help with the fabrication. So I am hoping that the brain power will rally to help in a proto-type or test model of this idea.THE IDEA: A mini A/C unit to keep a vehicle cool for short periods of time 1-2 hours. Why needed?? I own a Private Investigation Agency and have very expensive electronic equipment inside sensitive to the high heat in south Texas during the summer.Equipment on hand for the idea:A. Small Cooler & HEater unit that can be found @ most Walmart, Walgreens, ect... Size 12"x 10" x 6"Input: 100-240VAC 1.2 A 40 watt Output 12 volt 4.0 A (looks like a tall showbox with a single hinge that opens like a center console-armrest-glovebox in a truck or van. Picture below...B. A DC/AC convertor also sold at same stores. The unit is very small but will power the unit very easy. 12 volt 5 A 100 watt, 4" x 3" x 3/4"C. a zeus sealed 12 volt battery 4-5 AH with the PWR use of cooler.D. VArious size small electric fans to be used a blower fans.E. PVC or duct work for the application.F. Optional Solar Cell for battery recharge to be mounted on roof of vehicle.I am sorry if my post is inapropiate for this forum or if I have used this post wrong for my purpose. This is my first time to post anything...If there is anything I can do to help with the concept please let me know.I will try and add Pic's of the parts later.THANKS!!!PS: total cost of everything brand new was less than $50.00

Free offline RPG?

Does anybody know of any free offline RPGs? It has to be offline be cause I mostly want one so I have something to do while I download my podcasts (can't play games online and download at the same time). Also, I would like it to not be really gay.My friend plays a game called Conquer Online, I thought it might be fun to play, but it's an MMORPG, the key word being online, so I can't play it, because I'm on dial-up and I get disconnected all the time. I guess I'm looking for something similar to that.I know I'm kind of asking a lot of a free, offline game, but I can't play online ones.KTHXBAI

Firefox 3.0 RC 1 takes the lead on speed. The Mozilla dev team claims to have squeezed more performance out of Firefox 3.0. The betas were fast, so has the team been able to get more out of their code?Over the past few months I have benchmarked several incarnations of Firefox 3.0 beta. My last benchmark of Firefox 3.0 (using the SunSpider JavaScript benchmark), which looked at Beta 5, showed the browser to be the fastest of the pack, comfortably beating all the competition.UPDATE: I just upgraded: there is no "back page" button, and most of my extension are GONE: chatzilla had an updated version however.SECOND UPDATE: the first update problem was MY fault :-)FireFox 3.0 RC 1 news blog. The Beta is available here !

Office wars: cannon , piece count! (K'Nex)

Well if you have heard (you have now!) i have made a cannon for the office wars saga started by Dinky. it is very cool, instead of having a block trigger there is a pin you pull out of the top. it works like a real cannon, but mini. it gets a really good range*, concerting its size and piece count. rodsred--------------------1yellow----------------2white-----------------11green----------------19connectorswhite-----------4yellow---------4red-------------6light grey-----1orange-------3dark grey----12exoticblue spacers------------------------12tan locks/blue connectors-----4grey spacers------------------------2black hands-------------------------1total: 280 exact.sorry i don't have a recent picture of it. my camera is dead. but i have a older picture.i don't have a exact range measurement but i can shoot it across my room easily and it hits the wall with a decent amount of force. for the record the room i shot it across is around 10-15 feet long.

This made the forums break: Ì´

Yay unicode! I like combiners, so I tried one. It --probably-- broke the forum.
