Could I build a giant magnifying glass? (And maybe incorporate it into a steam engine?)

Optics are fun, and so following that logic, scaled up optics should be even more fun. And so this leads us to: How do I build a giant magnifying glass? The sun has a lot of power, and I want to harness that energy, and try out a few things, including the interesting prospect of using it to power a steam engine. (Heat up something, run water over it, and run the steam through a turbine).Several methods have come to mind, including: acrylic, freezing some water in specially-shaped bowls, and sandwiching water (which has a slightly higher refractive index than ice) between two parabolic pieces of plastic. I'm personally concentrating on the last one, as it would be more permanent than the ice.Just thought this up: freezing a lens, and then coating it with something immediately so that it will stay once it melts. What do we have that is clear, dries quickly, and readily available?Does anybody else have experience with this?UPDATE: Some relevant links...An ideal result.Parabolic mirrors are another possibility, but I'm still more interested in a lens.Where a lot of this sprang from.Indices of refraction. Is it Indices or Indexes?Hmmm....

Memorizing stuff easily

Memorizing Method This was originally going to be my first instructable but I figured it would be better off as a forum thingy. This is a method that can help you remember up to 10 items. I learned this from one of my teachers and find that it is quite effective. All you need for this is a brain, the names of 10 items, very little rhyming ability, and some imagination. Rhyming words that that you need to know... ONE rhymes with BUN TWO with TREE THREE with TREE FOUR with DOOR FIVE with HIVE SIX with STICKS SEVEN with HEAVEN EIGHT with GATE NINE with LINE TEN with HEN How do you apply these rhymes to remembering stuff you ask, here’s how. With an example... say the ten things you need to remember are, computer, a grenade, frog, cow, ninja, thumbtack, phone, cereal, Kansas, and CD. Computer is your #1 item and BUN rhymes with ONE, soooooo, picture a computer in a hamburger bun STOP! Visualize this image for a moment, and then move on. A grenade is your #2 item, TWO rhymes with SHOE so picture a grenade in a shoe STOP! Visualize this image for a moment, and then move on. THREE rhymes with TREE, so visualize a frog in a tree or a tree frog STOP! Visualize this image for a moment, and then move on. FOUR rhymes with DOOR, word #4 is cow, so picture a cow stuck in a door or something like that, STOP! Visualize this image for a moment, and then move on. FIVE rhymes with HIVE, like a bee hive, so visualize a ninja fighting bees or something. Okay, #5 is the last ex. I am going to explain, you should be able to figure out your own images for the rest.

Incredible Fuel Economy Jump

Okay - so I recently read this article (Article) about this auto club - the hypermilers. My lady friend got sick and I had to take her home - we were a 30 minute highway drive away at the time. At the time, I was driving a 2006 Altima (31/24mpg for the mtx drive train).Applying some of the things mentioned in the aforementioned article, I got a consistent 41.5mpg averaging 50mph and when I parked at home after some city driving and a lot of stop signs - the meter read 40.2mpg! For about 5 minutes on the highway, I was getting 43.4mpg.Impossible you say? Here's a picture off the dash from last night ;) Mind you, this was with an atx gear box! So those EPA estimates should be lower than what I posted above. Now that's damn near Prius territory for the average everyday stop/go driver with a 2.5L engine :PAt no time did I draft anyone or shut off the engine while en route. AND, I didn't take anything out of the car. There's a road kit, some umbrellas and a case of water bottles :PSo does anyone know where I can buy a meter to measure my fuel economy like this? I found Scangauge but the $170 cost comes with a bit of sticker shock :P Like the article said -- it turns into a game always trying to beat your last high score :P

Making an air well

I was thinking about another fun project that draws water out of the air with just the sun's energy. I noticed the empty open vinegar bottle I washed and set to dry on my window sill accumulate more moisture every day. It was pooling water in the bottom after a week. The bottle shape is like a ball with a long spout. I read a little about air wells on the web, but they are very large structures. It would be fun to build a small one that would make a few glasses of water a day. Comments? Here's one link Air Wells & Dew Ponds

Make your own philips screwdriver?

If I want a flat screwdriver in an odd size, I can take a piece of metal, heat it, pound it flat on one end and file or grind to shape; something within reach of even the clumsiest blacksmith. Is there some trick I'm missing that allows similarly simple home construction of a philps-style screwdriver? Or are they part of a plot to allow only factories to make screwdrivers :-)

Work board

I have a shelf, about 2x2 feet, (not attached to anything) that I use as a work board for my projects. I'm thinking about adding some things to it, like built in helping hands, magnets for holding tools while i'm working, a light, etc. Do you think it would be worth making an instructable about?

Wetsuit for 5 year old With fins/paddles

My nephew was born with severely clubbed feet, and lobster hands. After several surgeries he has ended up with with above the knee amputations, and tri-fingers with a very strong grasp. He receives intensive therapy and support, so he gets all the recreation he needs, plus occupational therapy. Well, he was recently introduced to a swimming pool and loves it. unfortunately, because of his amputations, he buoyancy is all screwed up. I would like to take a wet suit, and modify it to include a hard silicone leg prosthesis, and swim fins, and gloves that fit his fingers, with webbing, similar to what long distance endurance swimmers and navy seals use. I figure I can use off the shelf neoprene for the wet suit, and take very good measurements for the gloves. I have made patterns for outfits before, so I can layout the pieces, and have my wife or mother stitch them together. (they are great with sewing machines) For Bouyancy, I was toying with the idea of air bags made from cordura nylon and fillable from the outside with air attachment nozzles, and stitched inside the legs. They would be surrounded by hard plastic similar to the shape of his prosthetic legs he is getting used to. The torso of the wet suit would be stitched to the legs, so when his torso grew, I would cut along the seam, replace the torso as needed. Anything you guys think I am missing? I will start posting sketches and renderings as I get started on this project...

n00b-Style Diagram for Stereo Headphones Circuit

Hey doods. A pair of headphones I have has a kinda short cord, and I want to make an extender for it. I have the 3.5 mm jack and the thing you plug it into, I just don't know how to connect everything up. The "thing you plug it into" I have has four little points on it, two being connect to the same thing. I suppose that's normal.I don't know really how to read circuits, so just make it look like "connect this wire to this terminal".Crap "Diagram":*stereo headphone jack*-----------*cord*---------*thing you plug it into*Thanks doods :D

Solar operated timer - NEED Help Please...

Hello everyone!I need help!I have an idea of a product I'm designing to get accepted to a design school.I need help since I have very little knowledge in electronics.I need a circuit for a timer... an egg timer with a twist (I think)Should have a switch (click type), 1 Buzzer, 6 indicator LEDs, and I take it that some kind of Controller (I have no idea what kind) and should work with solar power.Should work as follows:You press the switch once - one LED is lit and the timer count back 10min. and then the buzzer will go off. press it twice - 2 LEDs are lit and it will count back 20min till the buzzer goes off... and so on up to 60min.If 6 LEDs are too much for Solar power, 3 are also OK (30 min timer) or NO LEDs, but a "beep" indication for each press / 10min. time.I hope it's possibleAnd thank you all for your HELP!!!Take a look at the attached picture... Just to get a laughET

Cheap GPS Unit

Where can I find an incredibly basic GPS? I am looking for bare minimum, something that just showed its location or that had an LED that got brighter as you got closer to an entered point. I am just trying to determine if simplistic GPS units are still available amidst the flurry of moving map, full-color, talking, computerized models with built-in A/C and a fridge. I would like to get into Geocaching, and just have a cheap GPS, but the cheapest ones I can find are still LCD screens with moving maps that cost $200. I'm hoping for well under $100, but I'm not holding out. I'm a geeky high schooler with no budget to speak of.

Lawn Mower Blinker System

This past summer i recieved an older riding lawn tractor, without the mower deck. I tuned up the engine, replaced old worn parts, painted it up, mounted a trailer hitch, and built a snow plow for it. After realizing that i could have even more fun with it, i changed out the drive system and made it go about 25mph top speed. With the power that i aquired, i want to put a blinker/ hazard signal system for it. Just for fun. Using 6 12v bulbs (4 for signaling front/rear left/right, and 2 optional rear running lights), and a 12v tractor battery, i need to incorporate these to blink at either a fixed rate or variable rate, using some kind of apropriate op amp. If you have any ideas, or can whip up a schematic, i would greatly appreciate it.

Air Tank Help

Some friends and I are looking to make some projects, mainly air powered. We have been looking for an air tank to hold the pressure before we discharge it but have been having problems finding the exact part. I have found lots of the air tanks to fill tires and stuff like that but I need something to hold a good amount of pressure and let it out in one big shot and can be charge with a normal car tire air compressor. -I need to know the exact name this items goes by. (Just "air tank" gives me the tanks for tire inflation) -I need to know a webite or store to purchase them at. (Home Depot or Grainger by any chance?)

electic generator

I have not made this yet, but my idea is building an electric generator using a bicycle wheel surrounded by a non turning metal frame. Tightly backed on the bicycle wheel would be permanent magnets arranged in a slant pointing in the same diection and outward toward the surrounding frame. On the frame would again be permanent magnets wrapped with copper wire slanting inward toward the bicycle wheel. The magnets facing each other would have like poles. North facing north or south facing south. I know this is just like an electric motor so far. You would get the electricity from the arrangement by placing a thin copper stip on the top of the frame. But different from the motor is the idea that like poles repel. once you gave the wheel a slight movement in the same direction that the magnets slant the wheel would turn until the magnetic energy would exhaust. You could make strong magnets using rebar wrapped in copper wire and use a inverter to change the AC in your house to DC and connect the current to the copper wire surrounding the rebar. Then when the magnetism of the rebar is sufficiently strong cut the rebar using a hack saw into small pieces to place in either the bicycle wheel or metal frame surrounding the wheel, I'm not sure of the electric power dynamics you could produce, but it would seem that using strong enough magnets could make a generator that could power as large a device with amperage/volts you can create. It might be used as a device to run your furnace blower or refrigerator in an emergency if the power produced was high enough. I think this would all depend on the strength of the magnets you produce. But if it works-you could have electric power from the magnets as an alternative to batteries or gas driven generators.

Need ideas for 2 month old daughter's bouncy seat project

OK...My daughter is 2 months old and is colicy(sp) and only is calm when in her bouncy seat....see image of the bouncy seat we have. here is the funny part, she is only calm when you rock the seat...fast and pretty hard. So I step in the lower corner of the frame and get into a cadance when the thing rocks and she is calm. I need ideas on getting this seat to bounce on its own...I've tried the swings, and she hates them. This and the car are the only thing she likes. THANKS!!!!

bubble wall?

Hi everyone! I am not a tech .. I am just a girl who loves to create odd things and gets really excited about making cool freaky lights in my house. I would like to find an inexpensive way to build a bubble light wall.. like make it big and part of the wall itself. I have some concept of what I need to do already, but am perplexed at how to build the tank itself .. like an 1nch or so deep .. but if anyone has any good ideas for this I would really love to hear them. also... would it be better to use panels or one large tank .. or if there is anything premade that i could convert into this. Thanks =)

Where to buy cheap parts in the UK

Hey, I have just stumbled upon this site about 2 hours ago (been wandering around looking at stuff to make) and have discovered a minro problem, the instructables all seem to link to US sites and they don't deliver to the UK and any sites I know of that are based in the UK are very expensive. $4 for a single small watch battery seems a little steep. So, if anyone knows of any cheap places to buy parts like components, tools and similar supplies I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance for your help with this.

Headphone Guitar Amp?

Hello all, I am just wondering if any one knows of any circuits for a headphone guitar amp? I have done the Altoids amp from the tape deck. It works great, but sound quality isn't too great. (it works great in a pinch though ;) ) I have been looking for some on Google and what not but haven't found any thing to useful. I am fairly new to electronics, I can build the stuff but might not know how it all works. Trying to learn ;) Thanks!

LED candle help

Hi folks! This site is so inspiring! I'm looking to hack a battery powered holiday LED window "candle." The missus likes it because it has a timer to shut off automatically after 6 hours; however, we don't like the way the "flicker" looks. We'd much rather bypass the flicker, but the timer and flicker are all on the same sealed bit of circuit. So, my question: is there an easy way to put a tiny (maybe 3/8") 6-hour timer on an LED? Thank you in advance! --Kiribub
