Yay! Another Cool New Ad!

Advertising sucks. Billboards are crap and here in the bay area we have one that's lit with LEDs and can be seen from miles away. But this... this is good. Rube Goldberg-style ad by GuinnessThere's an annoying ad before the ad (how meta!), but it's worth it.

Anoying Add

I couldn't help but notice the new ad for Ace Hardware on the site. Glad to see you are getting some ad revenue for the site. But does the thing have to bring up a larger popup version of the add every time my mouse just happens to cross over it? This is really putting a drag on my browsing experience for the site. If you could disable the automatic popup of the ad that would be great.

The best car ad ever made

A family member sent me this ad that was posted on craigslist, while it was the most explicit ad I've ever seen, I'd prefer this over any normal ad. Enjoy those who feel comfortable reading this. DISCLAIMER:  I bleeped (****) out any explicit words...... Though I could have missed s-something.  And explicit's definition is different between people Side note: If anyone thinks this is a tad (or more than a tad) over the top, PM me or reply saying so. I'll delete it. - - - If you think you'll be offended by this ad... DON'T READ IT.  - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - POS 1994 Honda Civic LX for sale - $600 (Marietta, GA) Date: 2010-07-11, 4:49PM EDT Reply to: sale-63pgj-1837513434@craigslist.org [Errors when replying to ads?] That's right, you can own a piece of shi... history right now for only $600. You may wonder why I didn't post a picture and that's because with a car this crappy, a photo is not needed. Just imagine the worst possible car and then picture a camel taking a dump in the trunk and you'll have a close approximation. You don't need to worry about me lying... it really is a POS. There is no risk of you getting over here and finding out it's really a gorgeous gem worth thousands... that doesn't happen...ever. But if for some reason that's actually happened to you, then you are acquainted with a crazy cosmic karma that has never thought to even piss in my face. I almost had a date on PlentyofFish and you know what happened? The f***ing AC died. For two years while I was not dating, it worked fine. The day after I get digits, the AC craps out. The car also has a weird hesitation problem that was not fixed even when I replaced the fuel filter. What could cause all of these things? Satan in the drive train...that's right... it's rare, but it happens to guys like me. This car is actually demon-possessed so you can forget about any sort of easy fix. Jesus said you need faith to cast out demons like this and believe me there are only two people on the planet that have that sort of faith. One guy lives in a cave in India and the other guy is dead. And you can forget about the guy in the cave helping you because, if you can find him, he's just going to tell you how physical setbacks are really spiritual blessings...blah blah blah...yada yada yada. Exactly. Don't expect sympathy from any motherf***er that sits around in his underwear in a cave. Other problems with this car include busted boots on the tie-rod ends, busted wheel hub boots, broken AC, leaking power steering system, ABS light always on, check-engine light comes on occasionally, driver window sometimes comes off the track, paint has permanent dirt in it (yes, it's f***ing permanent...you can't scrub it out with anything less than sandpaper or some highly explosive chemical that causes cancer in 49 states and erectile dysfunction in the 50th.) The car does drive, but that's about all it's good for. Good luck getting it to pass emissions. I've never tried as it's still registered in Clarke County. If you want to date, this car is probably not for you. On a positive note though, I can assure you no one has ever had sex in it. It would take a miracle to get a girl to even sit in this car, much less take her clothes off in it. Other possible uses for this car included entertainment at frat parties. You could charge people $5 a swing with a baseball bat, although you still probably wouldn't recover your investment. You might be able to sell it to the Mythbusters and get the to test the myth, "Is it possible that a car could really be this s***ty?" Adam Savage and Kari Byron will have a field day and close it off with "Myth f***ing confirmed" and a side comment from Kari about how whatever d*****bag use to own it must have never been laid. There are some positives like a beautiful Lumar 32% tint job, keyless entry with remote trunk release, an Alpine CD Player, and Pioneer speakers in the door. So at worst, you can sit in your driveway and listen to music with a bottle of Jergens and a picture of Eliza Dushku. I really wouldn't recommend taking it on the road until you replace the tie-rod ends. You might crash into a bus full of nuns and then the Pope will reign motherf***ing hail fire down on your betrodden a** with more fury than the inquisition because you actually decided to drive and be seen in such an amazing POS, killing 20 of his lovely Sisters. One other thing you might use this car would be pushing it off a cliff. If you've ever wanted to see what it's like first hand for a car to fall hundreds of feet and smash against rock, then here's your chance. Although don't be surprised if this demon-possessed sleigh from hell manages to f*** up your good time even in that bold scenario. I don't know how it would, but it would probably figure out a way. If there are any parents out there reading this, don't let your children fall into the situation I'm in. I would never have ended up with this car if I had pursued a real career. But instead I majored in math where the best job I can find now is up in Portland with a bunch of bran muffin eating hippies, jerking off Moose for 75 cents a smile for some wildlife conservation sperm bank. Let your kids do something with good with their future, like wait tables at Denny's. Oh yeah... it's white, 4 doors, and automatic. Whooptie-f***in-do!

Puma's robot likes toasters too!

So Puma has a holiday shopping ad where a robot is slaving over a sewing machine, while products scroll across the screen. I wonder if anyone at Puma checks out Instructables? I didn't realize that robots universally loved toasters. I like their ad, but I don't think their line-up of products is very cool. They could be doing better on the design front. I would be curious who they think their target audience is for this ad.http://www.puma.com/holiday/pindex.jsp

Creative Advertising that Works

When the first ad for Sony's Bravia came out I loved it. It was set in my city of San Francisco and the sheer beauty of seeing hundreds of thousands of bouncy balls going everywhere was amazing. I forwarded the link to lots of friends and we all talked about it. I still watch my old 20" CRT at home for movies, but I do have a soft spot for Bravia should I ever decide that I really and truly need a big HDTV, which isn't likely any time soon.So when the second ad came out I was thrilled. It had exploding paint and colors, but it lacked the magic. It felt forced and the fact that elements were digitally removed took away the handmade quality that really helped the first one connect.Yesterday, the third one was released online. I think it's a step back in the right direction. I highly encourage you to check out the official link, but here's a youtube version with crappier color. What do you think? If you haven't seen the other ads, check them out first. So here's the order: - bouncy ball ad from 2005 - paint ad from 2006 - bunny ad from 2007

Popup ads?

I've noticed a return of a certain popup, which I'd seen a couple months ago. This one has popped up approx five times in the last 24 hours. I'm running Firefox 2.0.0.16.It opens a small, empty window (firefox popup blocking?), which I didn't have a chance to capture--I clicked inside and it closed... But I did open the "view source" window before it closed, and here's the code:Empowering Your OpinionssetTimeout('self.close()',(60*1000));function load_survey(){ window.open("http://survey.questionmarket.com/surv/444201/ai_start.php?site=2&from_aicode=27628437", "dlsurvey","toolbar=no,scrollbars=yes, resizable=yes"); self.close();}URL:http://amch.questionmarket.com/adscgen/invitephp? Ad Blocking ads?

Ads on homepage?!

I logged in to my pro membership account this morning and saw that there was not one, but several ads being displayed on the Instructables homepage.  The worst of them is a giant video ad promoting a new show at the top of the page!  Can anyone explain to me why I'm suddenly seeing ads even though I'm a pro member??  I know that the organization needs revenue, but they got it in the form of membership money from me, so I should't have to see these ugly ads. This disappoints me tremendously...

Ad Problem

Recently when I visit random instructables, I come across an ad like the one I have attached. It plays an audio clip about a man reviewing the movie Twilight: New Moon and it lags my browser to the point that I have to forcibly end the browser session. When I click on the ad, I get sent to google.com. It is always the same ad, but never on the same page. I'm not sure if it is a bug, but there has to be something wrong here. Any feedback on what this ad is, or if it is meant to do that, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. ****Please post all new virus reports on the new official virus problem topic here!****

How many Macbook(pro)s does the Instrucatable community need to buy to make the new ad worthwhile?

I've always wondered about the true effectiveness of online advertisements. Despite how intrusive they may be, I've never used them to shop or be inspired to shop. Call me crazy because I don't define my needs based on the companies that fulfill them. For an ad like the new "greenest family of laptops" on the front page, how many does Apple really need to sell to break even on the ad? I'm guessing not many.

Pro Account Getting Ads

I have a pro account but I'm still getting ads on the instructables front page. Is something wrong with my account, is something wrong with the ad, or is instructables slowly beginning to add advertising to pro accounts? The ad appeared in the spot where cool instructables and new contests are usually displayed: In any case, I'm really disappointed. First, admins censor my and cammers' comments on the ikea contest, and now this! Seriously?

Internet ad awarness

One of my children was on a game site called "girl games", and a very inappropriate ad was displayed in the center of the screen without any prompting from my child. My children will no longer be going on this site, and I think a whole lot more discretion and good judgment should be used by the site as far as their ads are concerned. The ad was very upsetting to my children, and therefore to myself. These ads are for a website called 'IMVU', which is a 3-D avatar chat room. The ads show skimpily dressed people, usually female, in compromising positions. They are placed on all kinds of web sites, even though the website in question may contain games for small children, which is indeed were this ad was. Do we want our children looking at disgusting and perverted images like this?

New Spammer Account Is Posting Ads On My And Others' Instructables

I'm getting spam from a new account called "PhysicsSupplier". Given the username and given that all of the comments posted using the account so far have been advertising an eBay account, I think it's a pretty fair to assume that it's an account created to post spam, and not to be a constructive member of a DIY community. So far, it's posted the following message twice on my latest instructable: "Instead of using a wine bottle, may I suggest that you consider using SoCal's " Experimenter's Tube " This is a heavy glass product that can be used for pressure and high vacuum experiments and the cost is low for what you are getting. It comes with a 20 page manual for various experiments and with some slight modifications it can be used for this experiment as well as others. You can obtain the tube by going to ebay and click to listing #'s 380137978058 or 230664743887. Thier website is socalusa10@gmail.com Best of luck." I flagged the comments as spam, but I didn't get any sort of confirmation, and the robot has been giving me some trouble lately, so I decided to post here to get an admin's attention. Thanks! Giant Ad

There's a huge National Geographic ad on just about every topic that takes up the whole page. So much that I have to scroll down just to see a title. Can we get this removed? I know it'll probably be gone after the premiere anyway, so I'd also like to suggest not approving these kinds of ads in the future.

Virus Problem **Updated Topic - 1/12/2010**

This is the official forum post for the virus problems some users are experiencing with our ad networks.  From now on please post all virus reports here. One or more of the ad networks that serve advertisements on the site has been loading ads that are infected with a virus.  We have been monitoring the situation for almost two weeks now, working with users to identify the infected networks, and then shutting them down from our ad rotation. Despite our best efforts, the Instructables Staff has not been able to reproduce the problem locally, either because the viruses are appearing in only certain geographic areas, or because we work on Macs.  As a result, we've been relying on users to help us identify the problem and target the infected ad networks.  Please understand that we are not serving these ads intentionally, nor is there a virus on Instructables directly, or our servers, and that we are doing everything possible to shut down the suspected ad networks that are causing this problem.  Here's what we know so far The virus appears to be what Microsoft calls a Rogue Antivirus.  It basically tricks users into thinking that their computer is infected with a virus, when their machines are in fact just fine.  A fake virus scan window alerts users that their computer is infected.  Once alerted with this news, users are misleadingly encouraged to install malicious software on their machine.  The alerts seem to pop up after users are redirected away from Instructables, sometimes immediately after loading a page on the site, or in some reports, just from users dragging their mouse over the ad spot.  The problem appears to have only effected a very small percentage of our users, as hundreds of thousands of people visit the site each day and only a few dozen reports have come in over the last two weeks. What to do Don't click on any links that instruct you to install software onto your machine.  Update the definitions for your virus program and install the latest updates for your operating system.  If you should experience any of these redirects or virus screens, please read the section below about how you can help us, and post your information to this forum topic. How you can help If you see a pop-up warning you that you are infected, or if you are redirected away from Instructables and onto another page that triggers a virus alert, take a screen shot (command + shift + 3 in mac; print screen button in windows) close the page down, and then come to this forum topic and post as much as you can describing what you were doing before the problem happened, what happened when the virus attacked, and what you did to fix the problem. Please include the following details with your post if possible - the following information is necessary for us to identify which ad network the virus is coming from: any ads serving on the page that you remember description of malware the URL of the page on Instructables you were viewing direct URLs of malware screenshots city, state and or country you are located in what operating system and browser you are using If you have Firebug installed, you can use it to inspect the problem pages and gather even more information which you can post to this topic. Previous forum topics about this problem include "Ad-Problem",  "Virus on Instructables" and "instant start virus alter programme".  While these forum topics are still useful in identifying the problem, we need to congregate all new reports here with the bulleted information above so we can gather the necessary facts to pass along to the ad networks to start attacking this problem as aggressively as we can. I've aggregated offline screen shots, emails, and other useful comments below that contain useful clues to get the ball rolling. Please accept our deepest apologies for this unacceptable frustration and continue to work with us so we can completely eliminate this virus problem our ad networks. ****1/12/2010 Update**** There's reason to believe that the virus could have infected your browsers cache, and thus be re-infecting your computer from there.  As per the instructions given in the New York Times Article "What to do if you saw an antivirus pop up ad" please follow the steps below before posting any new virus reports on this forum thread so we can be sure that your computer is not repeatedly infecting itself regardless of the state of the site. 1) Close the screen 2) Clear your browsers cache (directions here) 3) Scan computer with a legitimate anti virus software 4) Run any and all updates to your operating system If you are then still seeing warning messages and pop ups about the malware, then please do let us know so we can continue to track and fight this problem. We've shut down all of our ad networks that aren't absolutely essential to the running of the site and are working with the last two remaining networks to troubleshoot this problem.  All data shows that the ad networks are responsible for the virus attacks that many sites have been experiencing around the web recently (this is not just a problem on Instructables ), and we've got to take the fight to them to effectively stop the attacks.

Earning money online through Google Ad Sense

Want to see the questions already? Scroll to the bottom! I'm going to buy this game (it's actually quite cheap, $10 only, but you need another game to run it, which costs $20) and I don't want to ask for a reasonably large sum of money (well, I'm 13, can't spend $30 of hard-earned cash in one place) for 2 games. Since time isn't the issue here, and I can't go around cleaning up other peoples' lawns (due to the fact that there are no lawns) or do their chores, I'd rather do it online. I've decided to use Google Ad Sense since no other way is really appealing to me (not in hurry here, I can wait a year) and it's a passive form of generating money online, instead of dedicated work of which I don't have the time for. Just to get things straight, when I said "time isn't the issue here" I meant actual time in weeks, months etc, and when I said "I don't have the time for" I mean it's going to go in between me and my High School responsibilities. Okay, back to topic, so Ad Sense is a passive form of generating money online, which means setup-and-forget, although Google does let you look at your earnings. I read it up on their site, and there are 2 types of ads you can use, namely CPC (Cost-Per-Click) and CPM (Cost-Per-Thousand-Impression). Cost per click means $ will be generated if the website viewer clicks on it; Cost per thousand impression means $ will be generated if the people even view the site. Now I can't decide which one to use, since CPC ads are the better if the website doesn't receive a lot of views, but the ads are attractive enough to click on. CPM ads should be used when the website receives a lot of views but the ads aren't really that persuasive. (Side note, the ads displayed depends on the info you give to Google about your site, ie. site topic, location you're based in etc.) I might have lost you in there, plainly, the question is which should I use? Of course, that all depends on the topic to use (which is my own problem to solve, but feel free to drop in). For those too lazy to read everything else I've written: 1) Who has used Google Ad Sense? 2) If so, how much, on average, do you earn (please do tell if it's CPC or a CPM ad)? (Also include scale and popularity of your website) 3) How do you get paid from Google Ad Sense? (can't find it on the FAQ)
