How does one with no experience learn to work on and fix up cars? Where to start?

I am a girl and I have been interested in fixing cars for a while. Quite a few guys at my school seem to know how to fix cars up, but they had to start somewhere, right? Often, I think peoples' fathers help them out, but my own father knows nothing about cars, nor shows any interest in helping me. If anyone has tips on where I could start, perhaps I could find a shop where people would help me? Or do any car co-ops exist? I know there is such a place for bicycles where I live. Any tips would be great! I am enthusiastic and have some background with fixing bicycles and doing wood and metal projects, so I'm not mechanically clueless. I am mostly interested in old cars, but anything to start would be alright. I have browsed Craigslist for cars and found a few I could afford. On that note, I have a teen's level of funding, so I could find something, but tips on making the best of my money when going about fixing up an old car would also be appreciated (especially considering the cost for parts and such). Any tips on where and how to start are what I am looking fore. Thank you!

Whitewater kayak into a good fishing kayak? Answered

I am looking to buy a kayak. I don't want something too long, or too expensive. I am planning to buy off of craigslist. While on craigslist, I noticed that whitewater river kayaks have ALL of the features that I want in my fishing kayak. Limited size, plenty of space to move, alot of storage space... I was just wondering if I could buy a whitewater river kayak, make a few modifications, and use that as a lake fishing kayak? The only modifications would be fishing rod holders, a paddle hoder, and maybe a container inside to hold bait and tackle. Thanks for looking at this, freeza36

Great class, thanks! I got a good used MIG welder on Craigslist but skimped and got the cheapest auto darkening helmet on Amazon ($20). I'm having a terrible time getting the hang of this (I know: practice, practice, practice) but I think it's because I can't really see what I'm doing (positioning the tip properly, watching the puddle, etc). What to do with a box of motherboards?

I just went to a garage sale that I saw on craigslist. The guy advertised a good amount of computer stuff. Upon getting there I found a treasure trove of 3-8 year old computer parts. What is the proper voltage/amperage to charge a 12 volt, 12 amp lead-acid scooter battery? Answered

I picked up a little electric scooter from craigslist yesterday, but I can't seem to find any info online about what charger to use.  It seems to have been some sort of promotional item, as the only brand name on the thing is "Hansen's Diet Soda." I believe the battery is lead-acid, 12 volt, 12 amp.  My limited understanding of battery charging suggests that I should go with about 12-14 volts at about 1.2-1.5 amps.  Is that right?  What would you recommend?

3d printer service

HI everyone. I am wanting to start a 3d printing service business. This would be on a small scale to start. My question is how to securely download 3d files from customers so that I can use those files to create a 3d printed object for them, then ship objects back. I thought about offering the service on craigslist and receive the customer's file through email. But I know that a website would be better, but have no idea as how to implement the capability to receive customers' files securely and while keeping those files organized. Items will be printed using a makerbot, so I would communicate to potential customers as to the limitations of said printer. Thanks, and would appreciate any answers or advice.

Knitting Machines?

Can I use a smartphone without a sim card as an ipod touch?

So I want to buy a smartphone (samsung galaxy s2 skyrocket or something) from ebay or craigslist and use it as a wifi only device. If I dont insert a sim card(I know I wont get service or data) can i skip the activation process and go right to the home screen? From there I would turn on wifi and essentially use it as an ipod touch, to download apps, music, videos, surf the web, and stuff. I have a normal phone for talk and text. So my question really is, would this work? Does the phone need a sim card to run? How do you skip activation? Any other info would be helpful also, thanks!

Transforming a upright freezer into a super airconditioner? Answered

I'm getting a slightly broken, upright freezer from craigslist (only the seal is broke, so air's leaking out the door frame) and I was wondering if there is any way to make it into a slightly over sized air conditioner.  Living in Texas, it's kinda hot so I dont mind if its chilly (im the kind of guy that wears flipflops to North Carolina in the Winter on the Mountains). Im going to be putting it in a mobile home that will be internally demolished and transformed into a recording studio. It shall have its own little 'space' over in the corner. It would be great to cool down the heavy old-ish recording equipment and the computer I will house in the 'tech room'! Could I just cut a hole in the freezer and run a duct from it to the trailer? Would it put too much condensation? Thanks!  *Big, upright freezer around the size of a normal refridgerator*

We've Moved!

Instructables has taken another step forward by moving from the naval base in Alameda to San Francisco! While we loved the views and the shop at the tower the space was getting a little too cozy and, along with Potenco, we moved on across the bay into a new spot in the South of Market neighborhood. The new space means that we're easier to visit and we're much closer to the many cool folks of the DIY community in San Francisco. We have some big plans for the new space, but for now we're focusing more on unpacking boxes and making lots of runs to pick up free items we find on Craigslist. Oh, and finding all the cool new places to eat nearby. We're loving our new food options. We'll have more pics of the new space soon. Right now the place is pretty sparse, but it'll be cool. Very cool.Have a good caption for the second picture below? Enter it into our caption competition!

How to cool an outboard motor without using water?

I am wanting to build a personal ultralight helicopter. First issue here is to find a suitable engine. Outboard motors have the 40+ horsepower I need and can be found pretty cheaply on places like craigslist. One thing I know about these engines is that they use a water pump to suck up water and cool the engine. It is important that this water is present and can the engine can be wrecked if it is run without water for more than a minute or two. Short of including a water tank on this helicopter, do any of you have any practical solutions to keep an engine like this cool? (Just so you know, an "ultralight" helicopter must weigh under 249 pounds without the passenger. In the US, you can fly ultralights without a pilots' license. 40hp outboard motors weigh around 160lbs so I don't have a lot of room for heavy water.)

Instructables and Squid Labs have moved!

Instructables and Squid Labs have moved! We finally ran out of space in our Emeryville warehouse. During November, there were literally people sitting on the ground working on their laptops because we didn't have enough desks, space for desks, or even chairs to sit in. We're now located in a secret location somewhere on an island in the middle of the San Francisco Bay with plenty of space and spectacular views. Since that free barge on Craigslist was taken before we could get there, I guess it's not much of a secret location considering there are only two possible spots left.Check out our new digs at the old the Alameda Naval base control tower. Yes, we are actually in the control tower building. There's three guns in the front, plenty of parking for school buses and free boats, and it's tough to beat the view from my office. More pictures here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/93327160@N00/sets/72157594460055354/Directions to the control tower here.

How much is my PC worth?

I don't think I would actually decide to change PCs, but if I were to sell it let's say on Craigslist, what would be a good price? It's an HP Pavilion Slimline. Dual Core 2.50GHz Intel Pentium E5200. 800MHz System Bus 2MB L2 Cache. Running Windows 7 Home Edition 64-bit with 3GB RAM and 286GB Hard Drive. An average HP keyboard and mouse both wired. No camera. CD R CD RW drive. 3 USB ports broken on back but 4 port Rocketfish USB Hub. A Sapphire Radeon HD 7750 GPU at 1GB. If that's not enough info just let me know. I hope it is at least maybe $350! Last question, is $699.99 a good price for a HPE h8-1360t? Its 3.4GHz and a 2GB NVidia GeForce GT630 with 8GB RAM and 1T hard drive, just to sum it up.
