Use of enable on intelligent LED displays. Answered

I've found some early intelligent LED displays (datasheet here, I have confirmed I have the decimal-only variant) and have been trying to load digits onto them using the enable input. Currently, they will display whatever value is applied to the input pins when power is applied, but changing the value requires interrupting power to the display so it restarts with the new value. When enable is pulled to 0V, the display turns off and will not turn back on until enable has been released and the display has been restarted. The rise time of the power supply seems to be important in whether the display will start properly, as the display will usually not start without at least a10uF capacitor on the power supply.  Also, the decimal point is non functional. How do I get the decimal point and the enable input to work so that I don't have to switch the whole display on and off? Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Png display weirdity

In my recent forum posting in Events, "Perseids", you'll see a thumbnail (shamelessly copied from Wikipedia) of the constellation of Perseus. Its grey (although not 50 shades) In the post itself, the image, now displayed in full, is black, with a white line drawing in the centre. What causes that then ?

There was a single video on it when I tried to replace it I believed everything worked so I unplugged it and when I tested it all it did was turn on then turn off. I plugged it into the computer and now the computer says It could not install the driver correctly. Please help.

electronic numeric display board for volleyball

I have searched the Internet hard for a reasonably priced electronic numeric display board to no avail.  I am interested in constructing a remote control scoreboard for volleyball similar to basketball scoreboards deployed in high schools.  For many years I have played and continue to play a LOT of drop in volleyball at various local Rec Centers.  It would be great to be able to keep track of the score with a remote control device in your pocket while playing the game. Alternatively please let me know of any high schools being torn down which could be an opportunity to save a basketball scoreboard that would otherwise be relegated to a land fill site. When you think about the utility of such a device, why hasn't this project been done before?  Maybe it has and if you have any info then PLEASE forward.   I would seriously entertain any posted price for such a completed device if it exists as the hero factor is huge.  The advantage of building it yourself is that you are in a position to manufacture duplicates for others and you become the repair man. The bigger the display board, the better.  I know they exist but are mostly cost prohibitive.  At this point I am prepared to start with a small display for the prototype in order to get this project started since I am very enthused.

Scrolling message of Welcome for first day of school?

Every year on the first day of school we go outside and hold up a sign with our names on it to gather up our new students.  I would very much like to learn how to do this electronically using some type of LED display. Never done anything like this so it would have to be pretty simple at least to start. If it could scroll a welcome message that would be even better. Fairly handy with tools just never worked with electronics or programming. Thanks, Jeff

IR or RF light switch.?

I need to replace an old (1940s) rotary switch.  It turns on 21, 20 watt/110v light bulbs on a display sign.  Each one in sequence.  Once on, each light stays on until switch is rotated backwards or all are turned off.  Currently, the switch is on a 10' cable with all wires forming the cable.  It is bulky and contacts are bad.  So, I'm hoping one of you wizards can give me instructions on how to replace it with a wireless remote and relays or whatever.  I bow to the experts. If you prefer, you can contact me at   Moto-Ed@att.net Thanks, Ray

Paid LCD Project

Hello instructables, I have an idea for a device but not the skill to build a prototype.  I am in need of someone with technical skill in microcontrollers and LCDs. The device I aim to create is basically an LCD watch or bracelet. Rather than time which is numerical, I need the watch to display words. It will be wearable on the wrist and therefore use a battery. No buttons or input are required for this project. I also don't need to make the case. I just need the working parts. I envision that this will require an LCD screen, a microcontroller chip, memory, and a battery for power. If you are interested, I will be happy to pay you for your help. If interested, please PM me so we can discuss what I am trying to make further. I am flexible on the design and hopefully it would be a fun and easy project a willing participant.  Again, I will pay for your time and components but this should also be a relatively fun and straightforward project for anyone who's worked with LCDs (e.g Nokia screens) and microcontrollers before. I look forward to hearing from you.  Take care.

Clicked pictures not displaying

I've been finding that in some instructables some of the pictures won't accept a click and display. I'm starting to think that this is due to having the same picture more than once in a single step, like in this one (2nd and 17th picture in the intro). I think I had seen this problem with Firefox 2 and definitely see it with FF3. This doesn't affect only the doubled image either, other images are bothered by this bug.

Can i run a Rasberry Pi and a 10" Display from the same Battery? Answered

Hi, im planning on creating a portable Rasberry Pi Desktop. I found a bunch of circuit plans to run a RPI and a 10" Display - however iam not statisfied with what people came up with. 1. Issue - in the circuits i found they connected a booster to a 3,7v Lipo Battery to run a 5V Rasberry Pi and a second booster and the same battery to run the Display. This is a pretty incomplicated but impractical design if you ask me - the benefit here is that the boosters allow you to charge both batterys whilst the devices are running - but you need to connect 2 different cables. I would like to be able to charge the System with only a single power cable (Micro USB) attached. 2. Issue - The 10" Display does run on 5V, 980mA - but it is not reccomdendet to use it under 6V, 780mA - as a person who likes staying on the safe side - i would like to run it on 6v. Can anyone come up with a concept so i can run both the Rasberry Pi and the Display on the same Battery and charge the Battery whilst the devices are running? I thought about using a 6v Lipo Battery pack - but i need something to lower the voltage to supply the Pi correctly. Is that a good idea? Can you reccomend some other solution? PS - Is there also a way to monitor the remaining Charge in the Battery?

Some tips for digital calipers user

Do you have a digital caliper, and what do you do when there is some truoble on the display of digital calipers? Now i will share some tips to all of my new friends, and i sincerely hope that they will offer you some help when you needed.           When using the digital calipers for a long, long time, there will be some following troubles:         1. When digital calipers occur to the flashing digits, that means it is in low voltage. So the users should replace the button cell.         2. When there is no display on the digital calipers, maybe it is in low voltage or in poor contact. For the reason of low voltage, the user need to replace the button cell; while for the reason of poor contact, the user need to adjust and clean the battery seat.         3. When the display just shows the fixed digits, it means there is accidental trouble in circuit. So the user should take out the battery and put in back after one minute.

Is there a way to make a small motorized greeting card opener ?

A friend wants to be able, at swap meets, to display greeting cards as people pass by, but in a novel way. That is, have a card slowly open, stay open for maybe 15 seconds, then slowly close. And repeat, ad infinitum. Is this doable with cheap parts, or maybe a disco ball motor ? Thanks in advance ! Alan, Quantum Leap Unlimited Onward, Upward

Secure method to attach a phone to wall or floor?

I would like to figure out an inexpensive and discreet way to attach a smartphone to the wall or floor (not directly - slightly set apart with e.g a rod or a lead), in a way that it is secure, and can't be easily stolen. The phone will be used as a display screen and will be resting on top of something, so needs to be relatively manouvreable. I have access to a laser cutter / clear perspex / workshop tools / ebay.

Where would i start when building a usb LCD performance monitor?

I have been looking at the logitech g510 keyboard which is great but a little pricey. The thing i like most is its customizable LCD display unit on the top of the keyboard, i'm looking to build something like it. I dont have much electronic knowledge outside of wiring up led lighting and small stuff like that. I would like to make a usb or any way to connect my computer to an lcd display like the g510. A connection to something along the lines of this http://www.allelectronics.com/make-a-store/item/LCD-3162/16-X-2-LCD-W/LED-BACKLIGHT-LARGE-CHARACTER/1.html.
