How to thread an aluminium rod

Hi, I have got some 1 inch aluminium pipes (GI pipes) which I want to thread. I got the threading machine (hand held racheting type) and when I try to thread using that, it goes about 2 threads and after that, its pain - so stiff and even after exerting all my force, the pipe wont thread. I had read that to thread easier, you should coat the pipe with Wax or threading oil. Is there any other tips or tricks that you have used for threading? Any input is greatly appreciated. Regards, Sujith

What is the strongest type of thread? Answered

I'm wanting to make homemade Paracord, and I want to make it as close to military grade as possible in a handmade cord. I want to use strong thread for the core and casing, but I don't know which thread is strongest.

bobbin tangling up

After sewing an inch or so, my item gets tangled in with the bobbin thread. I've rethread the bobbin, got my book out to make sure I'm threading it right but nothing has helped.

where to buy inexpensive solderable conductive thread (or fine wire for making my own)?

Anybody know good places to buy fairly inexpensive solderable conductive thread (or thin non-kinking wire for making my own)? I don't intend to use it in a sewing machine, my goal being just flexible without kinking. I'd like a nice selection of metal colors also if possible. The Karl Grimm threads are pretty, but I've no idea how to order some or how much they cost, but I'm guessing expensive.

How to set thickness of the wall with thread? - confetti launcher

We are working with my kids on CAD project - precisely on a simple pressure valve for DIY confetti launcher. Yesterday we decided to design a thread, which assembles nipple of the valve to the wall . We prefer 1.6 mm wall (0.064 inch) because that saves volume and is enough for 1450psi air in case of stainless stell grade 310 (my son found a piece of SS at home, so we decided to use it). However, I'm afraid that in case of turning a thread there would be a need of redesigning wall thickness.  Question: How much thicker should be a wall for 1450psi (working pressure, pumped air or co2) if we add a thread reinforced with green Loctite (hard glue for threads)? What is optimal metric thread for that pressure?  I would be very grateful for standard, formula or table.

Depth of the thread cut by a tap?

If I was to drill a deeper hole, I buy a longer drill bit of the intended diameter.  I am sure the same thing apply to the taps as well.  However, in their specifications, I do not see anything about how deep a cut they would make.  So, my question is, what should I be looking if I need to make a deeper thread than than the tap I already have?  I mean is there a number which would say that this tap goes only one inch deep and so on? Thanks.

alternative to conductive thread.

Ok guys, so i was finishing up a project with my guitar, and i ended up replacing the strings. so i though to myself... what can these be used for. I decided to use them in a project im working on involving a belt, and regular wire would not work well. So, i weaved the guitar string throughout the belt, like you would with conductive thread, and its very very strong, and also flexible. And since its meant to withstand a beating it should last nearly forever. The strings i found to work best are the 3 smallest ones, E B and G, the others are too rigid to bend as much as needed. in the picture that is the third string, so it is more rigid then the first on would be, and i found it to work excellently for what i needed it to.

Navigating large-response topics

As a participant in AngryRedHead's Photo challenge, I've noticed that, as the thread gets longer, navigating it to find my past comments and replies is getting... odd. Using the next and previous buttons seems mixed up.  Sometimes you don't get a new set of comments, sometimes you get a few extra comments in between the ones you already saw, sometimes nothing happens. Similar things happen on other topics with large numbers of responses. (Running XP and up-to-date FireFox)

Super awesome secret thread! WOOT!

WHY DID YOU CHANGE?!? Why did you change what was good? This new site is awful! I see pics with no idea of what I'm looking at because the titles and brief descriptions are gone. I can't even hover and get a mouse over text. BTW - the pages don't format right in my OS / Browser combo - couldn't you have tested this first? This was a great site that needed no tweaking. Sad, so very sad....

Can i use all-thread as an axle for pulleys and gears? Answered

I recently used all thread to make an axle for two casters and wheels so that i could adjust how loose or tight the sides of the caster rubbed on the wheels. i made the casters and my dad attached them to the pre-made base that he had made earlier, looking back i probably should have helped out and made an instructable along the way... anyways the method that i used to put the wheels onto the axle made me wonder if i could easily use the same method to put a pulley or a gear onto all thread. the idea is that i would simply put a nut, then a lock nut, then a washer, then the pulley, then a washer, then a lock nut, then a nut and i would tighten the holy bejeezer's out of it until it was firm and steady, the friction of the washer would transfer power through the lock nut to the all thread. would this work? even as a proof of concept? i want to avoid ordering anything off the internet so if anyone knows where to get actual pulley and gear axles here in upstate new york that would be beyond great! also as a side note, i'm thinking about using a hole drilled into a flat piece of steel or even some uber hard wood that's been sitting around collecting dust and sawdust to use as support for the axle, it'd act as a kind of bushing/bearing type deal. the idea is that i would keep it working by simply putting two nuts together on either side of the hole on the all thread and tighten them together until they locked.

how do i run a timer on a separate thread in visual basic so it doesn't lag?

Hello, I am currently writing a program that records the mouses position over a 256x192 px box, then spits it out every 67ms in the form of dsgamemaker xds code which can be pasted into the project code, to make a sprite move on the exact same path as the mouse moved during the recording. A problem i am having however is that the timer event i am using to move the cursor representative sprite ( which moves with the D-Pad up down left right), when i begin recording, the sprite moves very very slowly because the frame rate is so very slow. as a separate timer event from the recorder, it moves slow, but when all the code is as one entire timer, it moves at literally 3 pixels per second. however this does not affect the generated sprite cut-scene. Ive read that if i put this timer  on a separate thread, that it will run independently from the other timer which will stop the lagging. but the problem is that i cannot find a single example online which shows how to do this, and the ones that do show, don't work. does someone know how i can make the timer run on a different thread? or even a different core for that matter, so it doesnt lagg? Im puzzled as to how other applications can do this, increasing a value one at a time, at such a high rate, when the timer event, will never do that. is there some other way to run looping code like a timer event? Your help would be greatly appreciated. ill post the application soon to show you exactly whats happening also im running VB 2008 express

Suggestions. Locking threads, and suggestion forum.

(I'm positive someone suggested this before) I think we should be able to lock our topics when we want people to be able to read the thread and the comments on it, and don't want people to post on it (for whatever reason, everyone's would be different I'm sure.) One reason I could think of someone asked a question (pre answers section) and someone answered their question, and they don't want people posting on it (for their own reasons). They could click the edit button, on the edit page, their could be another button that says, "Lock this thread." Click that button would lead to a page that said something like, "Are you sure you want to lock this topic?" If they clicked yes, it would be a locked. If they clicked no, it wouldn't be locked. If they ever change their minds, they could un-lock it the same way they locked it. (Click edit, press unlock, and click yes, unlock) Thanks.

keep a papermodel in good condition? Answered

I've just finished a paper model boat, it's a fishing boat with a lot of small detail, and especially rigging with thread. can anyone suggest any ways to keep it from getting broken/ and i don't mean, 'make sure you don't sit on it' or something, but maybe a spray on adhesive that would keep all the joints stiff, but wouldn't damage the paper.

In a threaded rod, are the threads counted in the diameter? Answered

E.g if you have a 3/16 inch threaded rod, will the diameter of the rod exceed the 3/16 inch, or is the rod 3/16 inch regardless of the threading?

Thread replies are showing out of context

Timeline:  Ever since the update to the visual layout where the replies etc to are outlined with a fancy new box (handy feature) -- Symptom: The replies are showing as being to the wrong parent - as in they are embedding a level deeper to the wrong person.  I got a notification that I had received a reply (see attached) that the person had said "coolio!" to me, yet on examination, it renders as a child comment to AngryRedHead. I've noticed this ALL OVER, when live replying, it will show new comments as sibling level replies rather than child level replies.  ex: Parent thread. -->reply1 -->reply2 .....--->child reply to reply1  ..... = indent

Not enough thread length? Answered

When using the double threads for the first time I nearly ran out of thread before I manage to close the stitches. Is there any way to change the length of the thread in the middle of stitching, or if there isn't, any way to connect two threads should I ran out of threads? If there is really no way to change the thread length after starting to stitch, is there some way I could estimate how long the thread needs to be?

Threading Needle with Conductive Thread? Answered

Can you please tell how to set up the needle and conductive thread?Typically, I would loop the tread through the needle eye (see picture) and tie at the endWith the conductive thread it seems redundant to have two strands woven, and in your pictures I only see one strand. How then can we thread the needle, keep the thread attached to needle, and keep it at one strand? Thanks

Thread Tangles. Ahhhhh! Answered

I've found that when I'm hand sewing with a double threaded needle, I get a lot of annoying thread tangles and knots in the thread. I've even had to cut my thread sometimes when I get a bad knot which is the worst when you're sewing with a double thread! Do you have any suggestions for how to prevent this?

Conductive Thread - what's it made of, and how does it work? Answered

Is it just a very, very fine bare metal wire, or does it have some sort of textile fiber core to give it more flexiblity and wear resistance (or is it a textile fiber that has inherent conductive properties itself)? Is it insulated like normal electrical wire? How does it differ from metallic embroidery thread?

The Official Failed and Unfinished Projects Thread

This is a thread for everyone to post pictures of their failed and/or unfinished projects. That way when people need ideas for something to build they can come to this thread and find someone's project and build it and improve on it and maybe make it work. There is one rule in this thread: IF YOU USE SOMEONE ELSE'S IDEA/MECH/PROJECT, YOU MUST GIVE THEM CREDIT. I will start the thread off with some pictures of my uncompleted projects. Here is the link to the album on photobucket because I find it easier to upload them there: http://s247.photobucket.com/albums/gg159/jollex/Uncompleted%20Projects/ Guest password is knexinnovation

I wonder why it is still happening...? (EDIT)

Usually, when I start a forum thread, it appears in the lists instantly.Sometimes, though, it doesn't.For instance, this thread made a lot more sense on the day I clicked "publish", and three other recent threads have taken time to appear as well:Job vacancy thread.Weird people thread.Pirate day thread.Does anybody have an explanation or hypothesis for the phenomenon?EDIT:This thread is currently hiding - please read it, especially if you are a UK ibler.

Old German(?) thread spooling machine?

Although somewhat difficult to explain, I was told this threader was used along with a spinning wheel-the treadle works fine and spins the hooked piece which then feeds the thread to the spools on the right. Ingenious !

forked threads and linear threads

Hi. It's about how are organized threads into forums. Currently forum threads are forked : you can reply to a comment separately, and each of your reply will make a new fork if somebody reply to your new comment ... this makes threads like trees ... Personally, I don't find this system very handy, more particularly when the same thing is being actively discussed in several forks. This system is good for short chats and when commenting instructables, but when it's about debating, it quickly becomes confusing ... For the forums, I'd prefer a system with a linear thread where messages are ordered according to time, and where we have to quote the persons we want to reply to. Several discussion could get "multiplexed" on the same thread, but personally, I find that less confusing as long as there are quotes. What's your preference ?

Single thread free end? Answered

So when you are single threading, there is a knot on one end of the thread, it goes through the needle and then sticks out 3-5 inches but is dangling there free? So the skill comes in not pulling the tail through the needle every time you pull?
