The new partition was set to drive J at 25GBs. I Began step 2, In CMD I ran the following prompts: diskpart, list disk (there was only one available), Select disk X, List partition. That is where i ran into the issue. What came up was on the CMD window Partition ### ////Type///// Size /////Offset Partition 3 Dynamic Data 992 KB 31 KB Partition 1 Dynamic Data 199 MB 1024KB Partition 2 Dynamic Data 422GB 200 MB Partition 4 Dynamic Data 42 GB 422 GB My question is which of the above partitions do i select to continue making my HDD bootable. Getting around school firewalls?

I am in highschool and was wondering if you could get around school firewalls by booting off of an external hardrive. I have a bootable back up of my computer and would there be any reason you could not boot off of an external hardrive at school and use all your programs provided you have the drivers for the computer installed.

Anyone know how to use their Android Phone as a Bootable USB Drive?

I have a Droid Phone and purchased a 32 GB SD card for it. I would love to be able to stop carrying the Bootable Flash Drive that I use to troubleshoot PC's (and often forget to bring, or leave when I am done) and instead carry a small USB cable that I can attach to my Droid and use that to boot to Yumi. Has anyone figured out how to do this yet?

Switching to alternate Mac partition without keyboard? Answered

I just noticed on my iMac that somehow the default partition was set from my Mac partition to the Boot Camp partition -- which currently has nothing on it. This is a major problem, because someone decided to restart the computer, and as you know, when a partition with nothing on it is loaded, no drivers for my bluetooth keyboard and mouse loaded. I got past the "No bootable device available -- Please insert bootable disk and press any key to continue" by turning off the computer and booting it from a Windows 7 disk. Unfortunately, the disk isn't compatible with the partition format, so I can't even load Windows to reset the default partition. I was going to try a Vista disk, but alas, the eject key is incapacitated due to the lack of drivers. I'm most likely to buy a new USB keyboard, but does anyone know how to switch partitions without a keyboard?

SONY Flash Drive HELP!!!

Help!!! Today I had my flash drive with me and was working on some school projects. It worked fine in the morning. Though later I was messing with Batch and saved them to the drive root. Now when I plug it in windows waits for about a min. then says that new hardware was found. When it's done it says that the device is malfunctioned. I don't know what to do or if that batch file is even the problem. If it is I think that it changed the devices properties into making windows think it is bootable. I have plugged it into my Linux machine but still no dice. It won't even come up there. Oh, and I can't reformat it because it's in a way not there. I really need those files for school any way to get them back would be great. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

PC refuses to install any OS

I have a PC that I need to get operational again after an accident with some overclocking software (either ClockGen or setFSB). The actual hardware seems to be working, and will install several different versions of XP as far as the first reboot, on which it will BSOD and restart the install in a loop. I have also tried installing Ubuntu from a USB drive, which I know works, and the computer does not accept it as bootable. The system has been unplugged with the BIOS battery out for a couple of months, so the BIOS is not causing it. It is running with minimal hardware, as follows: Intel Celeron D @ about 2.5GHz Replacement 20Gb IDE HDD, or original 150Gb (both do the same thing) on IDE1 CD/DVD drive on master of IDE2 I know it's pretty much obsolete, that's why I need it. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

Can I upgrade this particular BIOS?

I have an HP Pavilion a6042n desktop computer. The current BIOS is Phoenix - AwardBIOS CMOS Setup Utility. The current version is V6.0 the BIOS revision is 5.03   03/02/2007. I have another HDD that I wanted to add in with the original one. The purpose was to set these two up as a RAID 0 but while searching through the setup utility, I could not find anywhere to change my sata mode. I also cannot find my bootable usb when I'm rooting through my boot sequence all I find are the HDD group, the cd/dvd group, the network group, and the floppy group. So either I am being very dense or I really need to upgrade my BIOS...

Can you recommend software to play DVDs on an old Gateway Solo 9300 laptop running Windows ME? Answered

This laptop originally came with Windows 98, and played DVDs from its internal DVD player just fine. When I upgraded to Windows ME, some hardware drivers must have been lost, because it was never able to play DVDs again. Most programs would report that it was missing a hardware decoder, and so would require a software decoder. I would like to use the laptop as a media player in an out of the way location, and so am looking to revive its DVD capabilities. I've tried VLC, without success. Can you recommend other free programs that will work with old hardware and software? I'm unwilling to fuss with updating to a newer version of Windows. I would be willing to try a DVD or CD-bootable version of Linux, if it required very very limited web-searching for drivers.

BIOS bypass

Hi everyone, i seen some pretty basic questions lol, so i guess mine will be ok :D Basically ive been having trouble with getting this thread to fully work for me www.instructables.com/id/Boot-from-USB-on-a-bios-that-doesnt-support-it/step3/Boot-from-the-disc/ i kno i shuld post it there ... but only one person replied there so i didnt think id get a response, anyhow my problem is i dont have a dvd burner and im trying to install windows 7. as you more likely figured out from the link name my motherboard doesnt support booting usb option from the bios. my computer is a Dell dimension 2350 (prolly a good 10 yr old model) everything still factory cept my 2 512 RAM cards. im using a 8 gig magic gate Pro duo stick in a targus multi-flash card loader (incase you needed details) so i followed the guide in the link to the end, my problem is after i select the USB mode like in step 3... it does a quick reboot u can say, it freezes at the screen with all dots.. im gonna re try and see if i found my error. but i was hopin maybe someone else knows where i messed up. thanks for lookin and your time :) PS: i have created a bootable memory card with windows 7 on it if that makes a difference also

Is it possible to use a DVD player hardware / peripherals and convert it into a small "net book" style computer?

I have a "older" (maybe 2 years tops) DVD player made by Haier with a 7" screen. (Total width is about 8 inches.) My questions are numerous but can be sumeerized with this: Can I use the case, psu(battery), and LCD and rip the rest of the guts ot to make a small computer. Now granted, I know it won't be any kind of speed demon. I have built many desktop systems before. But insofar as laptop hardware is concerned I might as well call myself a complete beginner. My plan is thus (and if you would like pictures of the existing hardware and connectors I would be able to supply them): I would take out the mobo and the drive which is broken (my daughter burned the motor out when she was younger by manually moving it) and try to replace it with a smaller form factor motherboard. I would need this mobo to be able to boot from a usb drive so that I could use a bootable linux, possibly ubuntu, and maybe another usb drive for an input device. (Mouse most likely, use an on screen keyboard.) Another question would be are the connectors for the i/o in small devices standard or are they mostly proprietary? Would I be able to use the existing cables with a motherboard? If not are there converters? And the next thing would be that I would need a network card to work with it.... In the end, I would like it to be able to use a tiny linux, have some sort of i86 architechture (becuase flash 9 or 10 wont work with a powerpc arch.), and be able to use firefox to view youtube. It's kind of a gift for my daughter. Is it possible?

Request For Recommendations: Disk/partition imaging software

. I'm having some problems upgrading WindowsXP to SP3 on my daughter's computer. Fresh install. I can get the OEM WinXP Pro SP1a and the drivers installed OK. SP2 installs without any problems. So far, all software installs without a hitch under SP2. Upgrading to SP3 causes Windows Update to fail (updates download, verify, and attempt to install) and I can no longer install programs. I've tried installing SP3 at several places in the process, starting after the SP2 upgrade.. I'm looking for a free program to create/restore a disk image of a HDD or partition. I want to create snapshots after each step, so I can do a quick restore if the experiment fails. There are several free apps available, but none seem to meet my requirements. The direct-to-disc feature seems to be one feature missing from all of the freebies.. Anybody know of a free imaging app that will: Environment:run installed under Windows, but must be able to image the boot/system drive/partitionand/orno-install run under Windows from CD/DVD/USBand/orBoot/run any OS from CD/DVD Image files:prefer direct to CD/DVD.save, in CD- or DVD-sized chunks, to another HDD/partition (same HDD/Prtn would be nice as would using LAN drives)compression of data would be nice. Ignoring empty space is required.where possible, use images/compression/&c that will be compatible with other programs. Misc:free!First data disc should be bootable (created when saving to CD/DVD) and have app to restore image. Booting from a separate idsc would be OK.browsing files/folders in image would be nice, but not required. . TIA

Disk boot error? Answered

Last night, I wanted some files off my laptop drive, so I stuck it in an external enclosure and plugged it into my desktop (whilst on). I then turned off the desktop without unplugging my laptop drive and turned it on again today, forgetting to unplug it. I have USB booting enabled, so it tried to boot from the laptop drive and as I was out of the room when it was booting, it entered the recovery partition as the hardware is incompatible. I have done this before, so I just turned off my computer, unplugged the drive, and restarted. Instead of booting from my primary internal drive, it got stuck on the post screen. It detected it, but wouldn't go any further. I then thought that it was still looking for the USB drive, so changed the boot order and removed usb boot, same problem. Removing my primary drive just returned the error "disk boot error, insert boot drive and press enter to continue", so I inserted the primary hard drive (I have it in a hot-swap bay, so it can easily be removed, although being my primary hard drive, not "hot"). After doing so, it kept returning a similar error. I then figured that it was still looking for my laptop drive as a primary boot device, so I cleared CMOS with the jumper and after setting it up again, disabling every other bootable interface except the sata port my primary drive is connected to, and it still just gets stuck on post. I have left it about 10 mins and still get the same problem. It is also hard to enter BIOS or any of the other utilities, as it waits until after post, so I have to either remove all drives or insert the laptop drive in it's enclosure. How can I get my desktop to boot from the primary hard drive again? Inserting the install disk is also hard, because I don't actually have a DVD drive yet, so I installed Windows 7 extended trial through a memory stick from my laptop with a disk drive. I have since deleted it off my memory stick, and my laptop is now in pieces hooked up to my monitor/keyboard/mouse instead of my desktop. It is on it's back and the hard drive bay is open in case I need it again. My BIOS is award with additional features on a Gigabyte GA-H55M-USB3 board. Both drives are Hitachi sata-II drives, one being 3.5" and one being 2.5".

My network is really screwed up

I seem to be fighting a loosing battle with my network, things just never work like they're supposed to.For example, sometimes I have to reinstall my network printer on both my laptop and my ibook to get it to print again, even when the server has been running fine sans problems for a week, it will randomly do this shit.Another example is, right now I "was" just trying to copy some music over to an external firewire drive on my server that I have shared. I had the permissions on everyone set to full access yesturday but I noticed when I restarted my server, it did not detect my drive properly until I re-seated the firewire cable :S Thusly somehow it lost my share configuration for my music folder.I set it up, but this time I left it on read only because I wasn't planning on adding any music earlier, itunes and everything was working fine when i mounted the volume. I went on there and changed the permissions back to full access just 20 minutes ago as I wanted to add some music to my drive, I right clicked in my mac os x explorer and made a new folder just to see if I could copy over now, it worked, aswell as deleting the folder. So I drag the 60mb folder of mp3 files over, and it just sat there...and sat...and sat.... until eventually giving me an error -36, upon searching about, it means "-36 ioErr I/O error (bummers)".That's straight from the horse's mouth, and that really tells me nothing, what exactly does "bummers" mean???It's frustrating for me non stop, and it does this to me with other shares in mac os x, or they will randomly disconnect for no reason, sometimes after 15 minutes or sometimes after 3 days. I will note too, I can't connect to my server now, it just says missing alias in the mac os finder. Yet I can VNC into it no problem, wowa, but just upon checking my pc just now, it can't access any shares on it either, the cursour is just spinning, however I usually have no problems with my pc's accessing it, other than the printer thing.I'm just so god damned frustrated with my set up, I've looked it up and down until I was exhausted, several times, and I know I must be missing somewhere along the way, but I just can't understand how it doesn't work like I want it to. Shares are set up, firewire is out of the question, permissions set up, mac os x can log into server, check. It's all good until I actually go to use it for something when I really need it.I'll have to restart my server now to get it to work properly again...it was fine until I vnc'd into it to change the permissions, im gonna try restarting it now and just access it from it's own screen, perhaps vnc has something to do with it.Oh and to clear up any questions before they're asked, this is how I have it configured, as quickly and detailed as I can explain it:My network starts at my ADSL +2 4 port router/modem thingy (Speedtouch 546, it has it's own connection issues on the isp's side, but they don't seem impact LAN side data flow)That then gets split off to:*Port 1: iBook G4*Port 2: 25 ft. cable to 8 port switch (I'll explain that a little further down)*Port 3: 50 ft. cable to apple airport basestation in livingroom for wifi*Port 4: My main AMD PcMy ibook is configured for DHCP with manual address 192.168.1.64The switch just makes the modem think I have like 5 computers hooked into one port lol...My airport, for a long time I thought was perfectly fine as far as usuage with my thinkpad, however, I've been noticing the last few times it's powered on, the airport connects to the thinkpad, but assigns it a 169.xxx.xxx.xx address which does not exist on my network, but if I turn the wifi off and back on, it connects fine and assigns it a dynamic ip on my 192.168.1.xxx network.Other than that, I have it in bridge mode so that it acts pretty much the same as if the laptop were wired via ethernet, vnc, filetransfers, and online games all work good albeit the wireless delay, still not bad in VNC however. My AMD machine is set up for static ip at 192.168.1.66Switch:Port 2 of my modem goes to port 8 (uplink) of my switch.*Port 1: My server (Configured for static ip at 192.168.1.65)The rest are just my B&W g3 setup for static ip at 192.168.1.68 and an old P2 I believe is at .69 and a 1.5 amd athlon aswell setup on 192.168.1.71, all of those in no particular order except I made sure my server stays on port 1.I did have everything setup so my server was on port 2 of my modem all by itself, but I needed the switch over by my server so I moved it, however, I was still having these problems before hand, even when my server was running on a completely different motherboard! Also, maybe could someone tell me why my server won't boot unless I have a bootable disk in the drive (IE: my windows 2003 server install disk), just so it goes to "press any key to boot cd.......", of course I don't push any key, and it continues to boot into windows. However, if I dare start my server without that disc in there, it simply goes to "Invalid System Disk error, insert correct/valid disk (can't remember it word for word), and push enter"I've tried reinstalling windows server 03, and same deal, yet it's using the same hard disk for the OS that my previous motherboard used and booted from not a problem.I really apologize for the long post... but I've quite literally burnt myself out and lost all motivation with continuing to expand my computer network and so I figured I would ask for help on here for one last resort, but I know many people probably won't read it due to the long post, but I have a lot of problems I don't have answers for and I need to explain myself somewhat thoroughly or else I won't find the proper solution for the problem, now will I?
