How to hide a large speaker in a Halloween display?

We're preparing a bit of an over-the-top Halloween display.  Part of it involves three singing pumpkins on some sort of pedestal.  To provide the audio, we're using a guitar amp — it's about 16 inches high and sounds fantastic. Sounds fantastic, that is, until we stick it inside a cardboard-and-foam pedestal, at which point it sounds muffled and sad.  We could crank up the volume, but that doesn't really produce the clear sound we're going for. At the same time, I don't want the amp just sitting there on the lawn... I want to preserve the illusion that the pumpkins are producing the sound.  So I need to hide the amp in/under the pedestal, while still allowing clear sound. We've considered just having the pedestal open on front, draped with a thin dark cloth to hide what's inside.  That would probably sound great, but it no longer looks like a stone pedestal.  If there's going to be a big dark hole in it, I need some explanation for why the hole should be there, so it doesn't seem out of place. Anybody have any ideas how we can effectively hide this big speaker in the scene?

Knife concealment??

OK, i was wondering about how to conceal a knife, and i remember listening to Nocturnal podcast by Scott Sigler, and one of the gangsters had a knife in his shoe. i was wondering if i could hide a knife in my shoe like this:1. put the knife under that removable pad in the shoe.2. cut a hole in the back of the shoe that looks like this:|..................... | |_ _ _ _ _ _ _| |......................|dont mind the periods, they are just place markers.3. tie a string (fishing line) to one of the holes in the back of the handle, run the line through the above hole in the back of the shoe. 4. drill a hole in a quarter and tie the string to the quarter, then stick it in your pocket. when you need the knife, grab the quarter from your pocket, lift your leg with the shoe and knife, then pull it out. the way you cut it, the flaps will open and the knife will slide out, but will stay closed all other times. could someone please make an instructable on this, or tell me if it would work by testing it out?

Secret fold out compartment with shot glass and bottle in a birdhouse???

Years ago I saw a plan for building a birdhouse which actually housed two shot glasses and a bottle. Now I would like to make the "concealed" station for a friend. I remember that it had a cleaver fold down hinge that held the glasses in place on a board. The peg where the bird might have stood also did something clever. Can you lead me to plans for something like this?

Here's the CHALLENGE

Most of the mechanical stuff I dream up I can put together. I plan on submitting an Instructable in about 3 or 4 months. But I'm not so great electrically. So of course one of the things that I'd like to do, but find to be insurmountable is an Instructable for a digital camera that will monitor the exterior surroundings of my car for as close to 360 degrees as possible while I drive and while I'm parked AND be concealed AND be able to record all of the events for 24 hours. I'm sure someone out there would know how to do this.

washing LED's?

I want to weave a rag rug, and include LED's in the rug. Ideally, I would like to weave the wiring and LED's into the rug so that they are concealed in the rug- and not removable. But most people like rag rugs because they are machine washable. If I were to soak a LED wired rug in soapy water, rinse by hand and only use the machine to spin the excess water out, then line dry the rug, would the LED's still work, or does water destroy them and the connections? Thank you for sharing your expertise!

Wiring a salvaged CD drive eject tray mechanism and motor into a car?

Hi everyone. I'm making a custom back-up camera monitor mount for my brother's car. He doesn't live in a great neighborhood, so we want it to be hidden when not in use. We were just going to conceal it in an unused cubbyhole drawer under the radio, and he could pull it out and push it back in as needed. But as I was sitting at my PC, I bumped the DVD eject button and it occurred to me that we could spend a little more effort and have it be powered using a salvaged CD drive. I'm not an electronics guy, but I've pulled apart an old CD drive and the motor and gearing system seem fairly straight forward. The car is 12v DC, obviously, and the eject tray motor is also DC, but the spec. sticker on the motor is unreadable, so I don't know the voltage.  There's an obvious limiter switch in the mount that flips when the tray is fully extended, and what looks to be another one on the circuit board that flips when it's closed. Can anyone help me with wiring on this? I'd like to have it so he either presses a concealed switch to open and close the drawer, or possibly have it tie into the switch that activates the back-up lights. Thanks!

Clever, inexpensive shelves and storage built under attic sloping roofs?

I have my office in an attic, with long sloping ceilings. The space under the slope is wasted, and ends up being a catch-all for junk. I'd like a clever and inexpensive way to built custom shelves that make the best use of the triangular space (drawers on the bottom that use the full length to the edge, for tripods, boompoles, etc.) I'd love something that includes a concealed pegboard for cables. heavier duty pocket amplifier

I was in need of a pocket sized powered amplifier, so I made this:https://www.instructables.com/id/Simple-Powered-Pocket-Amplifier/However, I need to run larger speakers off of it, 6.5" woofers, and I need to get decent sound out of it. When I ran more power through my pocket amp (6v. battery pack rather than 3v.) I fried the circuit and had to make a new one. Any suggestions for a pocket sized, powered amplifier that can power said speakers? the amp and battery pack must be concealable in a suit.

How did this happen? How is mine not better? Answered

This is my idea: https://www.instructables.com/id/Cigar-bo... This is the other idea: https://www.instructables.com/id/False-Bo... The second idea was a finalist in a contest on Instructables. I was also in the contest with the first idea. I was wondering exactly how this was a finalist over mine? My idea was the same thing, but improved. It was even entered before his! My idea featured some of the things that people commented as an improvement in his instructable. The only thing I can think of is maybe the simplicity of design? Mine has more to it than just a secret box though, and it was far more concealed.

I drive allot for work, I see people endangering me and everyone they share the road with concealing their intentions to turn or change lanes. Most people I see just slamming on the brakes and turning are younger drivers who I suppose have not developed enough brain power to use the highly complicated device known as the turn signal. Others are just lazy and don't care if they get side swiped. I know its hard people but get your knuckles off the ground and check your blind spot and use your turn signals....

BB firing flintlock mockup

Very long story short, I'm making a BB gun. I've got the basic ideas and mechanics almost done, its just a matter of making it work and materials. One of my big problems right now is that the gun will be .177, but it's going to mimic the look of an old flint or caplock muzzleloading pistol, which ranged from .36 all the way up to .80 in the largest ones. Obviously the barrel will have to be concealed within a larger, false barrel. My problem is making the real barrel attach securely without negatively affecting accuracy because it's off center. fitting the breech of the real barrel with a nut or a thread insert  has crossed my mind, but I'm not sure if It will be enough. pictured are some examples of caplocks so you have an idea of what the finished product is planned to look like

We have used a number of standard cameras over the years such as "Gum Cameras" like these ones (http://gumcamera.com/)...However the quality and reliability of these is not great. We are looking to find someone who can design us a camera with the following: -HD camera recording -Good sound recording -Removable SD card storage -Over 60 minutes of battery recording and filming - at a minimum -Easy to use -Reliable -Easily charged and accessed using a USB -(Ideally) good in low light -(Ideally) holds it's the correct time stamp -Approximately the same size as the standard gum camera - or even smaller/more concealable We would probably looking to buy a minimum of 50 cameras to start with. Ideal cost per camera is up to $40-50 dollars.

Advice for a three-LED circuit w fading changes

Hey folks, I'd like to put together a circuit with three LEDs, all different colours, and the ability to fade between them at will. It's for a Sims costume, so the LEDs will be about a foot above my head in an enclosed and I'll need to conceal the switch somewhere on my person, like a pocket or under a shirt. I know pretty much zero about practical electronics, so I don't even know what terms to search with. If anyone can point me towards an existing instructable, or even just give advice on what components I might need to use, that would be sweet :) Edited to add: because I know nada about electronics, I'd like to be able to do this with simple components. I know this could be done with an arduino, but I can count the number of times I've soldered with one hand, and my last programming was on my TI graphing calculator.

Exploding color pigments - need ideas to make

Hello everyone, I am working on a film project and I need to make small explosions of colored pigments and/or powder. Below is a link to a few sample photos of the affect that I am trying to achieve. http://photogrvphy.com/pedro-aguilar-bang/ I have tried many different techniques from impact to compressed air. But I am not getting the shapes that I am looking for. I am thinking  that the best technique might be some sort of controlled explosion. This could be something detonated within a pile of the powder or potentially (and more complicated) and fully concealed shell that includes the powder. I will primarily be shooting straight down above the powder so it really only needs to explode up and out. And again, these are relatively small blasts. I would estimate the powder blasts in the images from the link are only approximately 2' in width at the most. And help would be greatly appreciated!

Voice Changer Software Into Voice Changer Hardware

I'm making a costume. It's a cosplay. What I Have: Voxal Voice Changer. I already know it's capable of making exactly the voice I need. What I Need: A way of synthesizing my voice with that voice effect as part of my costume. Is this possible? The voice I need isn't a very complex one, but it's not a simple pitch change, either. All it is is a little flanger and a little vibrato, but so far I can't find voice changer devices that allow this without being hooked up to a smart phone or a computer, nor was I able to find portable voice changers that included this effect. They're all girthy with lights and dials, and that's hard to conceal on a costume. I noticed Voxal has an export voice feature that allows users to create .voxal files out of the voices, so I'm wondering if there are existing voice changers that could have this file uploaded to it some how, or if there is a way to make or modify a voice changer to do this. Let me know what you think.

Compact Active Body Cooling System

So I'm going to be making a full-body space armour type costume (Samus from Metroid Prime) eventually and I want to try to design an active cooling system that isn't too heavy, can be concealed within the costume, doesn't require too much replacing of coolant , and doesn't use obscene amounts of energy. I know the way it's done in commercial active cooling vests is that they run ice water through plastic tubes in a vest. The problem with this is that there is a big, huge tank of water with a big pump that the vest is tethered to and it needs to be plugged into an outlet. The way I'm thinking of doing it is by putting a network of copper wires in the garment I'll be wearing under the armour that lead to a cooling system in the back of the suit that, right now, I'm thinking will involve ice packs and/or a fan array. I feel like it might not work, so the alternative is to design a custom water or liquid cooling system. I'm planning on using lithium ion batteries for the cooling system and lights if I can. Any ideas or suggestions?

Design help for battery powered LED lighting for display case? Answered

I wonder if people might have suggestions for battery powered lighting for a display case? The all glass case (except for base and canopy) now has an AC powered four MR16 halogen system. I want to replace that because of the heat, and because I don't want a power cord running from canopy down the glass sides. Ugly. I'd like to replace those bi-pin halogens with LED lights and power it all with a rechargeable battery. The canopy over the six foot tall case is 4" deep by 15" wide by 70" long, open at the top. I'd like to conceal the works in that 4" space. I'd want the battery(s) to be easily removeable and reinstallable for external charging. Long life to maximize intervals between charging would be a big plus. The lights would typically only be used when we have visitors. Maybe for as long as a couple of hours several times a month, but probably typically for much shorter periods. Ideas? Thank you. --David

What should I use to wire LEDs in a cigar box so that they light up when the lid is opened?

Hi there, I would like to set up a simple circuit in a cigar box so that it lights up when the lid is open and turns off when it is closed. I plan on putting a panel in the bottom with holes for the lights so that it conceals the wires. I'm hoping someone can recommend specific materials to me, ie what size/type of LED, button battery, wire, switch would be best? I'd like the lights to be white, and bright (lol but not like laser beams). Do I need to use resistors too? I spent a long time on here looking at comparable projects, and while I'm so impressed with the talent and scale of the projects here, I also realize the theory behind this stuff is pretty over my head so I'm a little hesitant to start experimenting! I'm sure it's got to be simple and hoping one of you might save me a lot of time and maybe from burning my house down. Any insight would be much appreciated! Hope I'm not being to much of a noodge in asking this. Cheers, Molly

Building a home-training program?

Sup all! I'm really interested in becoming a modern ninja, so I googled it a bit. In order to be an urban ninja, I will have to learn parkour and the highlighted of the traditional 18 ninja skills, others will be useless.(Horsemanship? It's Urban Ninjutu, in a city...) Check wikipedia here for more info. unarmed combat sword techniques stick and staff techniques throwing weapons techniques pyrotechnics and explosives disguise and impersonation stealth and entering methods water training tactics espionage escaping and concealment meteorology geography I need to find a good book/DVD series that will teach me traditional Ninjutsu, thus will teach me all of the listed skills. I want to focus mainly on unarmed combat, followed by stick, staff and sword techniques and weapon throwing. The rest is stealth, to sneak into places without being detected. That should make me a basic ninja. Finally, after I'll know these, I will study the less important skills - the italic skills.  What I ask for help is, to give me a good DVD or a book that will teach me either parkour or Taijutsu(unarmed combat). These are the things I want the most, explained before. I prefer the course to be free, like an online study course.

Slot Load Music CD Player, to retrofit in a 1957 Motorola Radio? Help finding a CD Drive, or get a Laptop Drive to work? Answered

Hello, my Mom has an old 1957 Motorola Radio. The radio has a lot of sentimental value. My Mom keeps it on display and occasionally turns it on to bring back old memories. Unfortunately the radio no longer works, which isn't a big deal to my Mom, as she loves it just as a statue. I had an idea to remove the innards, which can easily be done from the rear of the radio. Now the front of the radio has a slotted grill design, which a CD could easily slide through it, and it would conceal the Drive, keeping the original look of the radio. In short I need any kind of slot loading drive that will play music CDs without the need of a computer. That is the only problem holding me up on this project. I want to install the CD player and connect it to small computer amplified speakers that can all be hidden inside the radio. I can even solder lead wires to the eject, skip, and play buttons. So that I can hide them in the back of the radio, or possible figure out a way to make it remote controllable. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much, HandyAndy

My MAME cabinet

I decided to build a MAME cabinet from scratch.  I got the basic shape from http://www.arcadecab.com/Intro.htm.  I'm not sure what to make it out of.  I'm thinking just 3/4"plywood but I'm not sure it will finish nice.  Home Depot lists it online costing $40 which is kind of pricey.  For around $20 they have "Ultra-Blend Particleboard Underlayment" but I'm not sure it's really meant for this kind of thing. I modeled everything in Sketchup.  The file is attached.  I also attached a number of shots so you can get an idea.  I guess you can't add notes to pictures in a forum topic?  There is a stool that slides out so kids can play easier.  The control panel will hinge out to access the wires.  Another hinged door will conceal the keyboard and mouse which will slide out on drawer slides.  The keyboard is just a grey boxy shape in my sketchup pics.  Another larger door will swing open for access to the computer.  The screen itself, a standard modern LCD computer monitor, will be removable so it can be easily turned 90 degrees for vertical games.  One pic has it in the vertical position.  The red button between the speakers above the screen is a pause button. I'd also like a way to turn off the lights behind the marquee when the computer goes to sleep.  I can handle the electronics to turn off the lights if only I can get a 5v or 12v signal from the computer when it goes to sleep. So what do you think?  I'm still in the planning stage although I have ordered the controls and keyboard emulator.

Let us assemble power distribution switches at home together.

I am an electronic engineer in the field of power distribution switches. In recent days, I am prepared to make a project for power distribution switches at home together.  The project begins now: Home decoration, the concern of hydropower indispensable. The laying of the home circuit is a crucial link, the home distribution box installation involves the safety of home appliances. Therefore, I specifically summarise the home distribution box installation knowledge, as well as home distribution box wiring diagram to make the relevant finishing, for everyone to take precautions, the home distribution box has a clear understanding. Home distribution switch installation points 1, Household distribution switch sub-metal shell and plastic shell two, there are two kinds of mounted and concealed, the box must be intact. 2, The household distribution switch of the cabinet wiring assembly should be set up to zero line, to protect the ground wire, phase line, and to be intact, with good insulation. 3, The installation of air switch seat should be clean and there is enough space, should be installed in the dry, ventilated parts, and no obstruction, easy to use. Never install the distribution box in the box to prevent fire. 4, The household distribution switch should not be installed too high, the general installation of the elevation of 1.8 meters, in order to operate; into the distribution switch of the electric tube must be fixed with a lock nut. 5, If the household distribution switch to be open, the edge of the hole to be smooth, smooth, distribution box buried in the wall should be vertical, horizontal, edge left 5 to 6 mm gap, distribution box wiring Should be rules, neat, the terminal screws must be tightened. 6, The loop into the line must be sufficient length, no joints, after installation marked the name of the use of the circuit, the installation of household distribution box to be completed after the removal of the distribution box residue. How to assemble power distribution switches at home ? 1, The installation of electrical box, distribution box installed on the wall, should be used bolts (expansion bolts) fixed, bolt length is generally buried depth (75 ~ 150mm), the thickness of the box floor, nuts and washers Of the sum of the thickness, plus about 5mm of the "margin". For smaller distribution boxes, it is also possible to embed a good brick at the installation site (in the form of a distribution box or a panel mounting hole) and then use wood screws to secure the distribution box or power distribution board. 2, Dark assembly distribution box, distribution box embedded in the wall installation, in the wall when the hole should be reserved than the length and width of the distribution box about 20mm, the depth of the distribution of the thickness of the distribution box with the wall Plaster thickness. In the masonry distribution box, the box and the wall filled with concrete can be fixed to the box live 3, The distribution box should be installed firmly, horizontal and vertical, vertical deviation should not be greater than 3mm; concealed, the distribution box should be around the gap, the edge of the panel should be close to the wall, the box and the building, Part should be coated with anti-corrosion paint. 4, The distribution box installed in the spiral fuse, the power cord should be connected to the middle of the terminal contact, the load line should be connected to the threaded terminal. In this way, in the loading and unloading fuse will not be electric shock. Porcelain plug-in fuses should be mounted vertically. 5, The distribution box of AC, DC or different voltage levels of power, should have a clear sign. Lighting line, should be set to zero line (N line) and protect the zero line (PE line) bus, zero line and protection of the zero line should be connected to the bus, not twisted, should be numbered. 6, The wire leads to the panel, the panel line hole should be smooth without burrs, metal panels should be installed insulation protective cover. Metal shell distribution box shell must be reliable grounding (then zero). Ps: Excuse me if I was wrong in words or expressions as I am a green hand in the field of power distribution switches. I need continual learnings. What is your idea ? Do you agree with my ideas ? Any of your ideas would be highly appreciated. May someone would like to help ? thanks in advance.

Camoflauged Cage

Hey, I'm guessing this isn't a problem something that is only troublesome to me. You see, I am not allowed any pets, but you know, I am planning on adopting a couple of rats. (yea rats!) I need to make a cage which is hidden/camoflauged. It will already slightly be hidden and I'm sure I can arrange furniture in a way to conceal further. The cage needs to have air flow freely, made of plastic or coated metal, have a way to easily clean it, and it has to be escape proof! (no wire floors though, how ghastly) The rats I will aquire will be babies, about 4 weeks old. If they are males they'll get to be about 2 pounds and about three feet (including that wonderful tail xD) In a year. I live in an efficiency apartment, so I can't hide them in a closet (and if you ever seen a rat reaching out to grab the rapidly diaspearing light you wouldn't want to anyway) My best bet is "walling" off my room (which has the only bathroom) with a curtain, rearranging the furniture, and of course have a clever disguise! My first attempt (I was merely fostering these guys, their owner got evicted) was a storage drawer bin, I sawed off the back of the first drawer (and was planning on expanding throughout the set) and stapled in chicken wire to help with airflow. The fact that it was a mostly plastic drawer made it easy to remove and hose down quickly. I also sawed a little hole to hold up their water bottle which is an absolute MUST. They will knock over water bowls, sit in it, and most crazy of all, stuff bedding in it to absorb it. The main problem with this set up is that of course, you can see through it and see the little guys running amuk. I placed a blanket halfway covering the front and covering the sides, but Jackie decided that he was bored and pulled it all in, thusly exposing him and getting him caught `_` It lasted 2 months and I got them into a new home anyway. So! I'm sure I'm not the only one who has to hide a pet/pets dwelling! Does anyone have ideas??
