I'm willing to create a zvs induction heater but I have some questions Answered

Hello there! I want to create a ZVS induction heater but I don't fully understand yet how the coils need to be driven. I haven't started yet with building it, but I already wanted to check if the induction heating effect was working, so I connected a coil onto my high current DC blockwave generator and nothing really happens. it's a PWM controller which switches between 0V and the applied voltage. Is it because it sends DC signals to the coil, and the magnetic field goes into saturation? If so, I added a capacitor in series with the coil, to filter out the DC component but now nothing happens. There is nearly no current flowing trough the circuit. I'd also need some information on what influences the intensity of the heating? Is it the Amp*Turns that matters? because we're using high frequency here to lower the required current; but if it's amp*turns then we need the current to be as high as possible. So something's wrong there in the way I thought this works :/ I do know how the material gets heated. (by eddy currents that increase if the flux alternates at higher amplitudes) also, at what voltage should the coil be switched? does the voltage matter? Should I use something like 12v? 40v? or even 2v of I only need high current? I do know that the use of the high frequency is to increase skin effect in the material to be heated, but what other reasons are there for using such high frequency? Is it also because eddy currents will increase at higher frequency? If so, why would this happen? A lot of questions indeed :) but I'm not going to start copy-pasting the circuit, and then just being happy that it's working. I also need to know Why it works, and how! Feasibility of an eddy current difficulty brake on a tricycle.

Hello all,  I'm a biomedical engineering student in Canada, and I'm working with a doctor to develop a training tricycle for children with cerebral palsy. One of the issues we'd like to solve is that since the tricycles are not geared, some children are simply too good at pedalling on flat surfaces and don't get the necessary muscular workout in their legs from pedalling.  We'd like to add some sort of difficulty setting to the rear wheels of the tricycle (the front wheel is occupied by a locking mechanism we designed) to make pedalling a little more challenging for some kids. I considered using a friction system but the idea of adjusting tension in two breaks simultaneously and the frequent pad replacements doesn't appeal to me.  I recently thought of using eddy currents to slow the rear wheels. This would be extremely convenient because we could control the eddy currents in function of the child's strength to give them each a personalised workout. My questions are : Do you think it's feasible to use eddy currents to adjust the difficulty of pedalling a tricycle by slowing the rear wheels? Could an electromagnetic system be used with a sufficiently large battery to allow a child to ride throughout a day? Would a system with swapable permanent magnets be more efficient (similar to a power tool)? Would an eddy brake system produce excessive heat that could in turn harm the child?  Thank you for all your help as I'm not an electrical engineer.

Power from a moving aluminum-part?

Hi I was playing with  some ideas and wonder if it is possible to get power from a moving piece of aluminum. I know, if you tab the alu, you can get the power because to the eddy-currents geenrated if you have a permanent-magnet near... But what if i wanted to get the power NOT from the aluminum, but from the "other" side like the magnet? If i hold a magnet near a moving piece of aluminum, can i get power from the magnet as well or are the eddys only generated in the alu and not in the magnet since it already has its magnetic field? So the basic question is: How to get power with the help of a moving piece of aluminum, but the tab-point in NOT the aluminum but something geometrically separated. Thanks a lot! :)

 In the film Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, the  game comes down to two players; Hatchet Harry And Eddie, ( If you've seen the film please skip to the end for the question) Eddie does not have enough to continue. The croupier says- We'll have to see your cards if no one lends you the money. Hatchet offers to lend him the money. Eddie says- No, I think I'd rather turn 'em over. Hatchet-We don't have to turn 'em over because you can borrow....you need five hundred grand to see me.  Eddie-  That' s if I wanna see you. Hatchet- Your gonna have a problem carrying on, ain't ya? Eddie- I'll see you. I've never played this game  so my question is;   Is it in the rules that if you run out of money in this position in a game, that you have to carry on if someone offers to lend you the money; or was Hatchet  insisting that Eddie take the loan through intimidation alone? Coil gun projectiles?

Will solid discs (think coin-sized) work as coil-gun ammunition? Or is a hole in the centre absolutely required for the eddy-currents to flow?

Casting a footed box? Answered

I want to cast a small, footed jewelry box. about 2"x3", and an inch deep. I can cast the top separately, but the box must be hollow on the inside, and I can't figure out where to put the opening to fill the mold. I plan to cast the bottom part, then a piece to fit inside to retain hollow, but where should the opening be -- on the top edges or the feet? Maybe on the back where it won't show? How would I do this?-Eddy

steel cable as a transformer core? Answered

Could i use thick steel cable as a transformer core (1 inch stranded cable) if i saturated it in a nonconductive (epoxy? rubber cement? ect..?   material to eliminate eddy currents and molded it into a double C core?

Can a solar light be charged indoors?

Hey guys, Can a solar panel like this be charged with indoor lighting, like a calculator is, or does it need to be actual sunlight? Its rainy and cold in Canada, and need to know if I can just sit it on the kitchen table all day (the light is on anyway) and charge it up. Working on a Sun Jar, and have disassembled the outdoor solar light. I want to know if the panel/battery/light is in working order (I found an opened box at H.D. on sale for 1/2 price!) :) Thanks

north woods bed-frame

Attached images are from an ad for Eddie Bauer "North Woods Collection" bedding. I'm interested in the construction of the ?bed? or ?bed-frame? in the images. Is this a solid piece of wood? (if it is it must weigh a ton) or is it something created just for advertising purposes -- i.e., pretty, but not functional? Any suggestions on how something like this might be built? I've looked through all instructables for "beds" and "bed-frames" but can't find anything like this. This would be an outrageously overpriced piece of furniture if purchased at retail. I'm sure someone in the community could suggest a couple of methods for building it. Also, the pictured lamp and bed-table. thanks much from mpls., mn.

Is this a mass change or disturbed local gravity? Answered

I dropped a single 6mm dia steel ball down a 3/8 copper tube 1.29m (50.75 in) long, it took less than 1 sec to pop out the other end. I then dropped a string of 5 X neo disc magnets, 5mm dia x 3mm thick, down the same tube and it floated down taking 7 seconds to pop out the other side. I tried the same experiment with an aluminium tube and observed the same results. What is causing this phenomenon? Could it be magnetic eddy currents in non ferrous material? Has the mass of the neo mags been changed or is it a local gravitational disturbance?

Music categorisation

Some years ago I shared my PC with a friend. As most of the music dumped on there was his I let him categorise it, but some of the categorisation is a bit odd, making it difficult to find things.... The first one prompted the topic, what do you think: Bedouin Soundclash - "Reggae - Pop", whereas Eddy Grant is in "Reggae" Finley Quay, Deelite & Moloko are in "Pop" (there is a "Dance" category) Only Black Sabbath, Frank Zappa, Jimmy Hendix and Slayer are in "Heavy Metal", but Biohazard, Pantera, Sepultura, White Zombie & System of a Down, SOD (amongst others) are in just "Metal" as are Sheep on Drugs, Sisters of Mercy and Nickleback. "Rock" contains Gogol Bordello (he didn't think of adding "Gypsy-Punk") and Dread Zeppelin. The Beastie Boys go in "Rock - Electric", as does Massive Attack, The Prodigy and The Streets "Rock - Pop" contains Bjork, Nick Cave & The Cure (amongst others) ?

How to create motor or generator resistance system for exercise machine?

Researching a method to use resistance from a motor or generator for an exercise machine.  There is an axle from which both foot and arm levers extend, so there is rotation, but only about a half turn in each direction, so very low speed, and back and forth.  I have used magnets and eddy current and flywheel from exercise bikes, geared up with a belt.  This works ok, but does not provide enough resitance even when magnets are adjusted very close to flywheel (due to low speed of rotation). I hope to find something already built and available for a similar application, but can locate parts and build it if I understand how.  Resistance must be variable from low to very strong and controllable so user can adjust it.  I have DC motor, and shorting the cord greatly increases the drag, but how do I vary/control it?  Would adding resistance between the wires in the cord increase drag and make it harder to turn?  I have experimented with this and it does not seem to have an impact.  Thanks for your help.

I know the subject of backpacking as a sub-topic has been broached, however...

I don't, 'camp.' I backpack. There's a clearly distinguishing difference between what most people call camping and what I do. What many do. Most people who camp don't bother to build stuff from cans and twigs and bottle caps to shave grams. Most people who camp don't seek out a murky pond as a possible water source. Most people don't have to dig a cat hole. Most people don't have to hump in gear. For those of us that do, we tend to have a knack for ingenuity, craft, innovation; and style, if it happens. Backpacking is a philosophy -- the study of the art and science of living as comfortably as possible, with as little as is reasonable and as often as possible, in a place that wants to kill you. Camping is a vacation. I recently posted an instructable for an ultralight backpacking kitchen. I posted it for the sake of people who do what I do, not someone who sleeps in an Eddie Bauer sleeping bag on a Coleman double-wide air mattress. Not that there's anything wrong with that... It just ain't my bag of pool balls. It should follow that 'backpacking' be a sub-category of 'camping.'

A Hybrid of Coil and Rail gun

So I said i'd throw this up in the comments section on Youtube not too long ago, and I don't like it when something easy and free doesn't happen. This is some ideas and observations that have to do with coil guns (mostly). I'm in the process of finishing up several projects, so my resources are kinda spread out. I should have a prototyped coil gun finished in 2-3 weeks though, so if this doesn't clear things up, hopefully that video will. I should point out, I am a chemist with expertise in biochemistry, not electrical engineering. Basically my idea is to combine a railgun and a coil gun for the expressed purpose of avoiding the pitfalls that a pure coilgun or a pure rail gun have. At present, none of the designs out there would be capable of competing with an actual gun. By mixing the two, i'm hoping to get something that might eventually be capable of doing so. So.. I've included a very poor drawing (I'm not an artist). The barebones circuit is sketched in the lower right hand corner. The gun barrel, which is a piece of aluminum tubing split into two pieces to sever as a rail system, is sketched in the upper left, and again in the middle figure to show how to integrate the coil and rail system. Looking at the circuit design, you can see that this starts off as a very basic capacitor-inductor circuit. The charge is purposefully allowed to trickle through the circuit until the coil reaches saturation and the capacitor(s) are charged. When the trigger is pushed, the inductor side of the circuit has to dump into the rail system to complete the full closed loop. Because of the ferromagnetic material (the brown stuff), the magnetic force persists for a while (that is to say, it has high reluctance). The ferromagnetic material does one other thing that is important here. It forces the middle of the coil to be far off center. The coil is pulling the projectile into the middle of the magnetic field, but that is not necessarily in the center of the winding. Adding ferrite, or other high reluctance material, towards the end of the barrel biases the field towards that end.  At the same time that the coil stops getting current, the rail system become active. This allows a charge to pass through the bullet/projectile, and, even though the majority of the force is going to be caused by the inductive coil, the rail system allows an eddy current to setup in the bullet. This does several things. First the bullet doesn't have to be iron, nickel, or cobalt. With a stray eddy current in the projectile, any conductive material will work. The advantage here is that once the current stops, the non-magnetic material stops being  to the magnetic field, preventing backwards acceleration of the projectile as it exits the barrel.  Second, Rail systems and coil systems are not often used because they are perpendicular to one another, but, this can be used to put spin on the projectile, in a similar manner to rifling in a barrel.  After the projectile is fired, the circuit is open, preventing excessive electrical discharge.  My circuit design is really badly drawn... =T if it needs more explanation please post up questions.

Is it possible to link Arduino modules with a portable induction stove?

Hi guys! I would like to get an opinion on my first ever project. I would like to link an Arduino module to my portable induction stove. I was hoping that it would be able to do this: ---------- START ---------- 0 min - Start recording sequence Press[Rec] Heating Value: 0 Systems records no change in heating level 1 min - Puts ingredients and increases temperature by 3 levels Press[Increase Temperature]x3 Heating Value: 3 System records an increase in heat by 3 levels upon reaching the 1st min. 7 min - Dish is heated up, let it cool for a bit, decreases temperature by 1 level Press[Decrease Temperature]x1 Heating Value: 2 System records a decrease in heat by 1 level upon reaching the 7th min. 9 min - Dish is cooked. Decrease heating level to 0. Press[Decrease Temperature]x2 Heating Value: 0 System records a decrease in heat by 1 more level upon reaching the 9th min. 9.5 min - Stop recording sequence Press[Stop] Heating Value: 0 System stops recording. Recording is saved and ready for 'reading'. ---------- END ----------- Upon completion of the recording, this set of sequence should be able to upload back to the stove to replicate an identical set of heat change with respect to time. As such, would this project be possible? I would like to modify on the existing parts on my stove that I have. It comes with an interface or some sort that is linked directly to the buttons on the stove. (the buttons available are some commonly used presets and timer settings and an increase and decrease button for the heating level and timer) Any opinions and feedback would be greatly appreciated!!
