What do you think is the point of getting married? Answered

I'm just curious. Why should someone marry someone? Why not just domestic partnership? What about gay marriage? I'm up for a debate. If your points are not appropriate, message me. Really, go ahead. I wanna know.

Ok this is the Joke A Catholic engaged couple are in the car and the die just before the wedding and the go to heaven and they are at the pearly gates and see a pastor. they ask him if the can get married in heaven and he says "I'll go check". Four days later he comes back to the couple and hes says yes you can. Then the married couple says "Well 50% of marriages end in devorice. Can we get devoriced in heaven? and then the pastor says. So.. I got Married on Saturday. [update]

Update My Wife and I, would like to say thank you for all your kind messages. The sun is shining over the mountains, we have an amazing cottage with crazy wobbly oak floors, and we are both very happy. I am hoping to get some pictures blogged up on here, both for you all to enjoy, but also to link to my family. Most of you already know, but tomorrow I am getting married. It certainly has come around alot quicker than I expected, but I did expect it to do that. The ceremony is at 11.30 in the morning. Then we head off on our honeymoon to the Lake District. I am really excited, and can not wait. I have just finished packing all my gadgets,  now I need to start packing boring things like clothes and such. We are taking the internet with us, but mainly so we can do a little geocaching, and keep a keen eye on the weather. So, wish me all the best, no doubt I will need it. Having said that, I am not one bit nervous. I intend to get ready early enough to squeeze a Left4Dead game in before the ceremony. The downside is that you will see little of me, the upside is, we are hoping to do a 'How to get married' Instructable, after that, I intend to use my new found space and freedom to beat Kitemans 100 Instructables In less than 6 months.

How do I make cheap jam?

I'm looking to make little pots of jam as a wedding favour. Ideally it would be affordable and in season if possible (I'm getting married at the end of June). Although, it would be easier to make the jam well ahead of time. So, I guess what I'm looking to make is cheap but interesting and delicious jam.

So i have a crush on this girl.  I jokingly proposed to her and we're "getting married".  But she wants a stone ring.  How the hell do i make one?  What should i use to cut it?  I have a shop full of woodworking tools at my great grandfather's, but i don't want to destroy any of his stuff.  If i can get this for her, she'll be super impressed.

Is there any way to encourage banks/lenders to make a loan on a foreclosure/bank owned home? or a home that needs work?

My wife had good credit when she married me, I've always had marginal/poor credit, but see that there are dozens of homes that could use some work in our town, and for really cheap ($20k-$40k). I would certainly do a lot of the work myself, but don't know how that would affect said lender's opinion.

Twins Separated At Birth Met And Married

Http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080111/od_nm/twins_odd_dc;_ylt=AoZvBFiQ44VpuITp2zqX9sWs0NUEI know it's not really what iBles is about... but I couldn't resist posting it.Here is the article from Yahoo! News:Fri Jan 11, 2:33 PM ETA couple discovered after they had married that they were twins who had been split up at birth and adopted by separate families, according to a member of Britain's House of Lords.British peer David Alton recounted the story to parliament last month to support his argument that artificially conceived children should be told who their biological parents are.Alton said he had heard the story of the separated twins from a High Court judge who had dealt with the case."This did not involve in vitro fertilization: It involved the normal birth of twins who were separated at birth and adopted by separate parents," said Alton, an independent member of the Lords. "They were never told that they were twins.""They met later in life and felt an inevitable attraction, and the judge had to deal with the consequences of the marriage that they entered into and all the issues of their separation," he said."I suspect that it will be a matter of litigation in the future if we do not make information of this kind available to children who have been donor-conceived," he said.Alton could not immediately be reached for comment and no further information was available about the twins or where they were from."I think it's a very tragic story for the people involved," said Pam Hodgkins, head of a group that helps adults affected by adoption."It is a lesson that we need to learn and apply to the situation of donor-conceived children," she told Sky News."Whilst ... nowadays it would be most unusual for siblings to be separated ... the risk of secrecy affecting the lives of people born as a result of egg and sperm donation is exactly the same as the risks that have affected adopted people in the past," she said.

Wedding photo booth with no power supply... Car battery?

Hello, We are getting married in July and we would like to set up a photo booth in a beach hut (Our wedding is on the beach) but there is no power supply there. I was thinking that this might be possible using a car battery but I am not sure where to start. We would like there to be a screen so that the people can see the photo they are going to take and hook it up with a DSLR. Also any set up can't be too heavy weight wise as it will need to be able to be carried down 100 steps! Any advice would be amazing! Thanks in advance! Jo

How can I project a night sky on a tent ceiling?

I'm getting married in September and I want a night sky projected on the tent at my wedding. I love the images from Harry Potter in the Great Hall (I know that it won't look exactly like it because of the tent angles). The tent is a 40'X40' open sided. I only care that the upper half is projected. The bottom edge surrounding the tent is going to have string lights wrapped in grapevines possibly with wisteria and amaranthus hanging from it. Does anyone have any ideas on how to make this work, and how to rig the projectors to the tent ceiling poles?

The Hardships of moving around the house. And mariage.

Well, my dad is getting married in a few weeks and we need another room for my new brother. No where to go but the garage. We are turning it into a playroom and my room. There is a 9' by 9' outcroping from it which will be my room room. The problem? Two things. First, I won't be able to post my air cannon, my PVC water blaster, or my solution to the water crisis. That means no Instructables for a while, at least not instructables that don't fit on my desk. Problem two, all my building supplies are in a box in the back of the shed and the workbench that I used so much is now in ashes in the backyard. While your thinking about how bad this sucks, look at these pictures. :)

Aluminum Foam: A new age material for people

So i thought i'd start a thread on Metal foams. For those of you that don't know what it is i offer the following links: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metal_foam http://www.metalfoam.net/ Looking through the forums, I figured this could be something pertinent to a DIYer's interest, since metal foams, specifically Aluminum foam, is strong, light, and relatively cheap. The fact that it marries with advanced composite materials science is kind of an added secondary bonus. I'm personally interested in this sort of stuff because i want to make an ultralight aircraft and this stuff could be used to accomplish that... but that's sort of something that's tangental to most that'd find info on Foamed Aluminum interesting.

Valentine's Day Inspiration

After getting our first newsletter, Roger sent me this really nice thank you note and pictures of his project. Maybe his inspiration can inspire you? There's still a little time left!I want to thank you for this newsletter. I was at a loss as to what to get/make for my wife for Valentines Day and our 15th anniversary. After reading your newsletter and going to your web site, I was inspired. I made her 15 Duct Tape roses (14 purple ( her favorite color), and 1 Red for passion) , one for each year we have been married. Off the web site's Valentines Day projects, I made an acrylic heart with LEDs to light it up. I added an acrylic tube to act as a vase for the roses. Thank you for the inspiration, Roger

Original idea to ask her dad

Hi there, My name is Nicolas, I'm french and i'm asking for the help of the community. Me and my girlfriend are thinking to get married soon and I wanted to find an original way to ask her dad for his permission. The thing is that her parents live in Washington and I'm not able to go there. I was thinking of sending something or make something virtual (i'm a software engieneer).  Moreover her father is not a real techy guy but rather a tech enthousiast. So I search something around the tech theme. So here is my question, do you have any orignal idea with this tech direction in mind that i can produce to ask her father. Sorry for my bad english. If something is unclear, please ask for mor explanation. Best regards, Nicolas

Free Design Course This October

I thought this looked like something that would appeal to other members of instructables. This coursera course  "Design: Creation of Artifacts in Society" is run by Professor Karl T. Ulrich from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. It is totally free and runs for 8 weeks from Oct 21st 2013: https://www.coursera.org/course/design?utm_classid=971091&utm_nottype=course.newsession.signup&utm_notid=1166&utm_linknum=1 "This is a course aimed at making you a better designer. The course marries theory and practice, as both are valuable in improving design performance. Lectures and readings will lay out the fundamental concepts that underpin design as a human activity. Weekly design challenges test your ability to apply those ideas to solve real problems. The course is deliberately broad - spanning all domains of design, including architecture, graphics, services, apparel, engineered goods, and products"

OK, Let's clarify some things....

1) OK, I will clarify this after it confused me for so much time. For those of you who didn't know,Eric and canida are marriedI tell you this to help you avoid all the stuff I went through. I saw a lot of things that pointed towards this fact, but nothing actually confirmed it. I didn't have the courage to ask here, if I was wrong, the embarrassment would be too much.... So there. What happened to Stasterisk?Star Simpson is a girl that strapped a fake bomb to her and tried to go through an airport. It was a circuit board with play doh attached to it in certain spots. She is currently a student at MIT, which explains the website url. So if you want to get more of an idea of who this Star Simpson girl is. Check outthis pageAnd this ibles postMy name is BryantAlthough, I think Gorillazmiko made that quite clear. Get over it.

Please Allow Me to (Re)Introduce Myself

Greetings Folks! My name is Randy and I am a "new" member of the Community Management staff. For those of you who have been around a while, you may remember me from my time as serving as the first Community Manager of this website starting in 2007, or from my role as the Technology Editor in 2010, or even as the founder of the Instructables Design Studio back in 2013.  Albeit a lot has changed in my life since I last spent some time hanging out here in the forums - I completed grad school... moved to NYC... decided to get married... - my enthusiasm for this website has not.  I'm super-excited to be back in the role of community manager and more actively participating on the site.  I look forward to getting know everybody new, and catching up with those of you who have also been around forever (lookin' at you Kiteman and Caitlinsdad!) Please let me know if you have any questions or feedback for me.

So I'm Totally Official Now

This is a bit belated, but a few weeks ago I became an official employee here at Instructables. Today is the end of my third week here. I've been busy digging in to all of the duties and learning all of the behind-the-scenes stuff, but it's better late than never to make some kind of announcement, right? I think that Instructables is an awesome place and I'm totally grateful that Eric hired me on. To be able to use your skills in an area where you want to use them is a rare thing. That is why I've been able to spend a lot more time on the site and the forums. So feel free to ask me any questions about what's going on. I also promise to get back on doing some Instructables really soon. This summer has been busy for me. I got married in Italy, got a new job, and am moving to a new house next weekend. So I've been a bit preoccupied. But I'll soon be working through my queue of at least a dozen projects and get them up soon. Cheers.

YY:DDD:HH:MM:SS Countup Clock

I was looking to make a countup clock that would be able to count off time in seconds, minutes, hours, days, and years using seven segment displays. I have yet to be able to find an instructable like this. I imagine it would be very similar to a normal clock; however I do not know enough about electronics to be able to modify the standard clock instructables to be able to make my own.  The only way I know to do this with the knowledge I currently have is to make a mini PC and that would be cost prohibitive as well as overpowered.   The idea came up because I have my one year anniversary approaching and I figured it would be neat to have a clock whose sole purpose is to give an exact time count of being married.  I played around with the idea of having the clock play a song or display something any time a new year was added, but I figured for now to just stick to the basics.   If anyone knows of an instructable that fits this idea or is willing to make one/point me in the right direction here, that would be fantastic.

Tips for Aging Happily and Research

I am doing a mini research experiment for my psychology class involving interviewing 60+ year olds  who have aged well and are Exuberant in their old age. However being 18 I don't regularly keep in contact with many 60 year olds. I was wondering if any 60+ year olds (or anyone with wisdom regarding aging happily) would be willing to answer some short questions. If anyone is interested in helping me out these are the questions 1.How well are you enjoying your career/retirement? 2. How would you describe your last vacation? 3. What personal relationships have been important to you since you turned 50?  Describe the most important one. 4. Ask persons about their marriage relative to "the Four Horsemen".  Find out strategies used for successful marraiges. 5. Of the adaptive defensive mechanisms (aka Mature defense mechanisms), which do you believe you display on a regular basis. Also if anyone has any general wisdom on tips for remaining happy in their advanced age or how to stay happily married I would enjoy to hear it. (I'll write them down and store them away for 30 years from now!)

Making a wedding gift. Need help.

One of my best friends is getting married in September.  I've been trying to come up with a cool gift to make them, but am running out of ideas.  I was going to try to make something for their new home they just bought, but they got situated real quick with new stuff so it's kinda difficult to figure out something they don't already have or that will fit somewhere in their new home.  I wanted to make something that they could/would use, something that has some sort of function, but since the "home gift" ideas are sorta low, I was thinking something more sentimental.  A few years ago I made a gift for my brother, pieces of wood with a waterslide decal of his daughter and her name woodburned into it (I can't upload photos now for some reason otherwise I'd show).  I was thinking of something like that... BUT the husband&wife to be are also into dance parties and that gave me the idea of wanting to do something with LED lighting strip that goes with music played.  I'm thinking one or the other or both or something entirely different.  If anyone has any ideas for a wedding gift for a couple who likes dance parties/music/photos/beer/food/etc... I'd greatly appreciate it.

Help with an Idea to hack Amazon Echo Alexa for robotics

Hi Everyone! I have been consumed with the idea of using an Amazon Echo as a foundation for a robotics project.  It has a simplistic IFTTT command ability which would make great functionality for a robot.  There are lots of simple on off switches already compatible with the device.  The Echo is cloud based and constantly learning so the voice cammands will be come more and more streamlined over time.  It already is wifi and bluetooth enabled, can play music and search the web for you.   My idea is to add mobility.  I don't know if I will ever attempt this but I am intrigued to see what we can come up with.  Using RFID tags to identify people in my home, I can imagine easily telling Alexa to come to me or to do certain activities.  Set alarms for reminders to take medicine and then bring it to you etc.  I just feel like this allows an easy leap for some home robotics.   One idea is to marry it to a Roomba so it has other functionality.  Add a wireless video camera.  Keeping it as "off the shelf" components as possible would be great.  I don't know where I am headed with this but I would love for others on here to chime in and put in their two cents worth.  Thanks for reading this and I hope to hear from some of you.   update:  I'm thinking of making an Instructable from what I've learned so far. instead of posting add ons here in comments.

My time as an AiR

When I got the invitation to be an Artist in Residence, my wife's first reaction was hilarity, since I have the drawing skills of an orangutan. Getting here, and being here, has been a really big deal.  This site has been a big part of my life for several years, and it has been a real pleasure to share space with some of the most intelligent and creative people I have ever encountered.  I have seen genuine art being created, and wonderfully subversive acts being committed. Being in such an environment was, in equal parts, intimidating and exhilarating.  Although I have a long list of projects to try, I was sometimes spoiled for choice because of the freedom to create as I pleased. Projects I have created in my time here have been; Duct tape boomerang Paper bag kite Coffee stapler Cardboard conch Sculpted head Small-scale wave power generator (mentioned in the newsletter - woot!) Laser-cut penny maze Rock, Paper, Scissors board game Robot face stencil This is a shorter list than I would have liked (boy, you should see the length of my "to do" list!), but the downside of being given the freedom to create is the lack of enforced deadlines.  That is a failing on my part, and not a failing of the AIR system. On the up side, I have been involved in a lot more of the running and planning of the site than I thought I would.  I have judged contests, taken part in planning meetings, got involved in longer-term projects on the site, and helped de-bug the new AiR process (bring your bank details!).  The phrase dates me, but I grok the site a lot more now.  I've also seen the planned projects of the next guy, and they are awesome! I also got the chance to run a site Challenge to launch the new Birding Channel.  This was, I've got to say, disappointing - given the amount of publicity I managed to get for the challenge amongst the birding community, I had hoped for a lot more entries.  I guess that there are not many folk who are both Maker and Birder? I also got the opportunity to help out in other folks' projects, and to learn new skills, both traditional and modern (laser cutters are awesome!), from folk like Noah, Matt, Kelsey, and got a far clearer image of how hard, and how fun, it is to keep this site running. San Francisco is a great, mad, weird city, and I love it, but the most surreal day was being the witness to the wedding of an ex-pupil, who came over to the US to get married and have the honeymoon all at once.  I first met this person when they were nine, and now they're married... (I feel old again). It's hard, in a piece like this, to avoid rambling, so I'll stop now, except for one final point: This past month genuinely ranks as one of my top Life Experiences.  That may sound like an exaggeration, but if you know me, you know how important this site has been to me over the years.  Eric, if I ever get the chance to do it again, I will have your arm off at the elbow! And, you know, I think the rest of my family will as well ...

How to Start Home Improvement

Long time reader, first time poster! We bought a 1979 twinhome last summer. Since then, we haven't made many improvements or personal touches to it. Before this, I've always lived in a 1BR apartment or in simply in a bedroom. It's been easy to handle organization, styling, and feeling happy in my space. But now I've got an old-ish home with 3 bedrooms (plus all the junk that my husband brought once we married). I feel overwhelmed. I tend to be OCD about my space but I've been paralyzed for the last 1.5 years because I don't even know where to start. Another hindrance is no knowledge regarding most home-related things. I'm only just learning about certain tools and how to use them. I have many ideas for how I want certain rooms to look, but they're not complete. I don't know how to put together a room. Right now, our bedroom is the gross brown color the realtor painted it and the crappy brown carpet that came with it. We threw in our bed and some filing cabinets as night stands. I would like to add something for more storage space, personality, color, style. Maybe make a headboard. Maybe add a rug under the bed to make the room pop. Anyone have suggestions on how to tackle such a huge project (the makeover of my entire house) without becoming overwhelmed and paralyzed? My current thoughts are to create a strategic plan wherein I tackle one room (and only one room) at a time, making steps of the things I'd like to do (small and achievable). Thoughts?

Help needed - I'd like to run some mains powered led lights from battery instead and control remotely?

Hi all and thanks in advance for taking the time to read this plea.... Here's a bit of background to the project I'm trying to undertake. My wife and I recently got married and as we met many years ago working on a cruise ship, my family decided to commission a model builder to build a replica of the ship we met on. Wonderful! We've mounted it on a shelf on the wall half way up our stairs as it's the only place in the house it fits. My only problem is that is has a set of lovely white led lights built into it with a cable coming out with a plug on the end. There's no easy and elegant solution to get power to the shelf where the ship is and I can't access the lights to swap them for a battery powered set as they're sealed within the model. I figured that it may be possible to create a battery pack to connect to the lights instead of the plug. As they're leds, I assumed (and we all know what that leads to) that they may be low powered enough to run off batteries.  The other thing i'd really like and i have no idea if this is even possible, is to to have them turned on and off remotely as reaching the shelf to switch them off will be quite tricky as it's very high up. I don't have the first clue where to start. I am attaching (if I can work out how to do it) a picture of the plug that I have removed from the lights to hopefully give someone a clue as to the power requirements of the lights. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again in advance. Mike

How do I plan my wedding?

In January of this year on our anniversary my better half proposed to me. :) I am more excited and happy than I have ever been thinking of being married to Thomas, but there's one aspect that I dread- the actual wedding. I have absolutely no idea what to do. I'm apparently the only girl in the history of girls who hasn't spent a single day of her life imagining her "big day". I don't even know what I want my dress to look like! I have approximately a year and a half before the day comes- we haven't actually set a date but we decided on a two year engagement to have time to take some premarital classes through my church and let Thomas get a foundation in his new job. All that is set down right now: 1)The wedding will most likely happen at our church 2) We want a small wedding and large reception- Thomas' family is HUGE and the church is pretty tiny so this way everyone gets to be a part of it without being crushed 3) One of our mutual friends is going to make the cake (which I'm super excited about) 4) There is a LOT more I have to get started planning and I don't even know where to begin! So please send me your suggestions and any tips, projects or other sites that might help- I really have no clue what all goes into weddings so pretty much anything you could dream up would probably benefit me enormously. Thank you all so much! God Bless! ~Jamie

I need an iTunes-style database solution for all my videos...

Hello, Newby to Instructables, read about it in the newspaper today.  Looking forward to some help/input on this project of mine... I have a huge (and growing) volume of video media. pushing 5 TB, and I'll be buying another 2 TB drive before autumn.  Now, having all this media at my fingertips on my PC without having to rifle through my DVD library is great, but it's only half the battle.  What I really want to be able to do is search through all my videos and TV episodes with the same ease that I go through my music library in iTunes. So, what I need is some way to list each video, and list each "tag" that applies to that video (SciFi, TV, comedy, romance, etc., you get the picture).  So, Excel serves well enough for that part, though I'm not married to it as a long-term solution. And, Excel fails completely as a searchable database, where I can just type in, say, "SciFi" and get the database to present me with every single Start Trek, Stargate, B5, etc. TV episode and movie that I own. So, can anyone suggest a program that would already be able to do this for me? iTunes itself isn't a solution, because although I could  make a plethora of empty MP3 files, import them into iTunes, and assign all the metadata I want to them, there wouldn't be anyway to click on the empty MP3 entry and have the movie/video pop up and play. Also, my videos are either direct DVD rips or mkv files, so I can't import either of those into iTunes either. Thanks in advance!

would you throw an unemployed lazy sibling out of the inherited house that was left to be divided between 6 others?

I am the eldest of 7 siblings. I helped my parents and 5 younger siblings to purchase their first house, which they could not afford any other way at that time. I lent them the down payment with the agreement that my husband and I had half of the interest. I also wanted to help them with their financial stature. Owning a house and paying a mortgage will help their credits. My mother being the adult and saner when it comes to financial issues, so I thought, that I had a serious talk with her about the half interest between them and my husband and I. Three years later, they bartered the house for a new townhouse, without our knowledge, not being in the title.  I made a big issue about not getting my half interest upon knowing they purchased a new townhouse. They gave me and my husband our money back from the second mortgage loan of the new townhouse. To this day, according to them since we received our money back, my husband and I are no longer entitled to any more profit. Our parents passed away and left a Will that the town house be divided to us, 7 siblings. Our lazy sibling who is unemployed for years does not want to move out of the townhouse and does not want to follow what the Will said.  Our talks always ended in a screaming episode each time by my telling her to do right thing. To have a meeting and not hide the Will so she could stay in the rent free house that our mother left for all of us. Our mother who survived longer than our father made the mortgage payments for my two siblings left living with her are unemployed. The others moved out and god married and only sibling left who is unemployed and wanting to live forever as she can and refuses to discuss about what to do with the Will left by our mother. What shall I do? Please help and pardon my explanation if not so clear. Thank you.

Desktops of Oct & Nov - Creative Patch Addition

Want to get another patch? Last months desktop wallpaper thread did excellent, it would seem you loved the idea of getting some patches for your work. This month I am going to ask you to work harder for your patches! I want to encourage your creativity, so dig out one of your best digital photos, whip open photoshop, or show off a great new interface. All unique, creative and personal desktop screenshots will get a patch! Unique, creative and personal means we are looking for something new and fresh, not just a wallpaper grabbed off deviant art! Whether its a custom interface, or a home made wallpaper, just something that is unique to you. This month I have a couple of home made wallpapers to show off, I created both of these from scratch. By scratch I mean I actually cut up those bits of card, and glued those bits of marble. Both wallpapers were then accented and grunged up in photoshop. I then used geektool to match the type already on the card to make the date and time blend in. Tinkertool adds a few extras, including the modded dock, and menu bar items. Little Snitch runs in the menu bar, keeping an eye on what programs are doing. 3rd screen has a picture of my Fiance - as always :D 4th pictures shows my crazy screen set up! What are you waiting for? Post your most creative desktop set up, and claim you patch! Be sure to explain any fancy programs you have running also. To take a picture of your desktop on a windows machine use the printscreen key on your keyboard, Open up paint, Edit, Paste and then save this as a png. then upload this onto Instructables. To take a screenshot on a mac use the apple key, Shift and 3. This will save the picture to your desktop then you can upload it to Instructables. To take a screenshot in Ubuntu go to Applications>Accessories>Take screenshot. If this doesn't work blame Lithium Rain ;-) PS, I know this is like 28 days late, but I have been busy (I get married on the 7th of Nov!), also doing a joint two month edition means I will be able to check back and dish out patches!
