Does anyone know if the facilitator of mintyamps.com is ever planning to reopen the site to orders?

I really want to make one of the circuits and I have very little electronics knowledge.  Are there any alternative circuit boards I could order that serve the same function as the minty amp? Cheers, Dean

Minty boost DC-AC Switch

So I have this idea to put an Ipod into an old CD player case to make the ultimate Ipod Pod. I want to use the Minty boost for battery charging, but I would also like to use a DPDT switch to switch between the DC power of the batteries to AC power of 4.5 volts. I tried to research this and came up with a plan, but I'm not sure if this would work.

BBC plays steampunk band's wax record with fuse wire and mint tin.

Steampunk band The men That Will Not be Blamed for Nothing have released a new single. On wax. The BBC heard about this, and built a machine to play it.  For techies, their build is not exactly... good. The cylinder was recorded by Poppy Records with a mixture of digital computer techno-wizardry and a machine cobbled together from a video recorder and old arcade games. Played on a properly-built machine, the recordings are surprisingly pleasant to listen to.

Gameboy Mintyboost Solar ???? You tell me

First off, I'm a noob, but so far I have learned a lot. I have made the mintyboost with the solar ipod charger mod, but I had to put it in something different that a mint can. So naturally I went back to my roots and thought of the old school gameboy. So my ??? for you the educated and creative community is what else can I put in this case for fun?  On the front are 8 possible switches I could use to turn on/off led lights, mp3player, spy camera, taser, simon says, etc I just wanted your ideas on what you would put in. Thanks!

Semi Autos (Face the Truth)

Semi auto guns are very cool. I agree but we have to face the facts. The way a real gun works is the pin hit the primer on the bullet igniting the powder and the extra gas is used to release the shell and load another bullet. How can we replicate this powerfully. Even today real bolt action guns are more powerful than semi autos. I am afraid to say that is just isn't practical to make that out of knex.

Megaboost? A super high storage minty boost? Answered

So im thinking of making a Mintyboost for my ipod/android phone however I'd like to make it into more of a Megaboost. I wanna build it inside of an old Army ammo case and add multiple usb ports, with a much larger capacity battery(s) So my question is can i add the extra batteries in parallel and have them still recharge and operate the same way? Same scenario with the other usb ports?

Minty Boost Help

So, I plugged in the USB to an iPod Mini and the whole cicuit goes blank. I tried it on some person's MINI, but the light shut off right when I switched the switch. HOWEVER, it did work on my iPod Nano and my sister's iPod Mini. It seems like the circuit is shorting out on the MINI and not on the Ipod Nano. I am thinking it is a problem with the noob sauce's MINI, but I do not know why it is shorting out and turning the light out on the charger. Thanks -Brennn10

Minty boost solar power question

Hey everyone. Recently I went to The reject store (like a dollar store where things an cost over a dollar) and saw some garden lights selling for $2 each. I bought 4 of them. :D they come with one AAA battery each with 1.2V could I Purchase a mintyboost and modify the lights so they each charge up a set of four AAA batteries, with can detach and be used to charge USB device with the internal battery storage that was charged  by the solar panels, or would it have to be 2 AA's? Thanks for the help! :D

Why does my LM386N-1 amplifier chip get hot when using mp3 player as input, but is fine when guitar is the input source? Answered

I made the amplifier in this instructable https://www.instructables.com/id/Make-a-Sweet-Portable-Guitar-Amp/ and it is currently in breadboard stage. I had a few problems after adapting the circuit to have a switched dc input jack as well as battery. But after some trouble shooting i fixed these errors. I ran it off battery and dc input (9v) wall adapter (a universal 500mA regulated ac/dc transformer set to 9V) with a guitar as the input and it worked fine (as far as i know). Then as it said in the instructable that you could use it with and ipod or mp3 input too, i thought i'd try it and see what it was like. I used the dc input adapter when i did this and plugged in my mp3 into the input jack using a 3.5mm to 1/4" adapter. Then when i swithced on the circuit i didn't hear my music through the speaker, just a bit of hum and then i smelled a slight electrical burny smell so i turned off the power as quickly as i could. Then i felt around and it was the lm386n-1 chip that was getting hot. Firstly can anybody diagnose the problem? Secondly, is it likely to have permanently damaged my chip? Thirdly, do you think it will be because of the power source not being a battery? I don't think so, it worked fine with both with guitar input. But i suppose it could be related to that

OK so i bought the minty boost and everything worked fine until it burned up but now i know its cuz i had the bateries in it when i put it in a metal altoids tine and shorted it. The n bought another one thinking that it was my wiring that burned it up well the same thing happend. SO i spent about 40$ by now and want a to charge my ipod. But i want to do it with AA AAA not 9V. Any easy way to do this with out a big parts list (like tha minty boos) also i have no idea how to ahead of time know if it is Decherging the batteries when i connect it to my ipod or how good the charge is. Laptop battery to charge cell phone or tablet

I have a couple of L11S6Y01 Lenovo Lithium Ion batteries 10.8V nominal, 48WH, 4400mAH batteries and a couple of their AC adapters lying around the house. I was looking up the Minty boost DIY battery back up and I was thinking of making this battery back up kit to recharge my iPhone and Samsung tablets, both of which can connect to USB power sources. My idea: 1) Get a 7 pin connector that will connect directly to my AC adapter. For example: http://www.ebay.com/itm/External-Laptop-Battery-Charger-for-Lenovo-IdeaPad-B570-G470-G570-Z570-L09L6Y02-/121091427052?pt=Laptop_Batteries&hash=item1c319c8aec Maybe I can scavenge one such connector from this place:  http://www.ebay.com/itm/IBM-X60S-Battery-Connector-/350772373819?pt=UK_Computing_Other_Computing_Networking&hash=item51aba9a93b 2) Build a circuit similar to Minty boost : http://www.ladyada.net/make/mintyboost/icharge.html Except in this case, my source is a Li Ion rechargeable battery instead of 2 AA batteries. Any ideas and thoughts would be appreciated.

Zune battery to charge ipod touch?

My plan is to build a minty boost using a zune battery instead. I'm pretty sure i know how to implement the zunes battery to power the LM 7805 5 volt regulator. I need help with being able to chare the zune's battrery... A 3.7 volt Li-Ion Polymer battery. I want to use usb for this. Only trouble im having is how do i get the batter to stop charging when it is fully charged? it has 3 pins; P+, P-, and HDQ. I take it the HDQ has something to do with my problem. also seeing how the minty boost is 3 volts at 500MA my 3.7 volt should work fine as long as i keep the current at 500MA right? Also, I have a Tri-coloed LED (RED, GRN, BLU) I'd like the Red to show up when the zune battery is running out of power and the blue for when its charging the ipod., and green to be on when the zune battery is charging... I know to charge the zune battery isnt going to be far off from how im charging ipod batter with the zune battery. I know this is probably alot to take in so thanks for any help.

How to charge rechargeable batteries for a project? Answered

I am going to build a solar powered USB/ Ipod Charger and I have a questions pertaining to it. A solar cell will charge 4 AA rechargeable batteries (NiMH) in a battery holder and these batteries will power a device through a Minty Boost. Now, I have little experience with creating electronics. So I was wondering if I can connect the solar cell directly to the battery holder (with a diode of course) or do I need to connect it to another component and then to the battery holder. Thanks.

What is the best way to power a usb device with 2 batteries?

My project is to make a walking stick with a tesla ball at the top.  I wish to power a plasma ball ( like this one http://www.amazon.com/USB-Plasma-Ball/dp/B0052GSQ8A ) with just two batteries. The whole minty usb charger seems like overkill and meant for smartphones. This is a simple device that runs on 5v and 350ma. But I could not find any instructables anywhere for this.  I do not mind using 3 or 4 batteries if need be. Any link or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you in advanced.

Potentiometer help

Hello,I'm new here and pretty new to home audio/electronics projects so please bear with me here.I created my first clock amp a while ago using a Minty Amp kit, an Ikea alarm clock and some other bits and bobs. Here are some images:frontbackgutsI failed to take progress pics so couldn't create an instructable for the project but I plan to do that with my next one (I've had a lot of interest with people actually asking to have them made to order - which Mr Minty Amps, Bob Hickman, assures me is cool). Anyway, so I've ordered the parts to make another clock amp but decided to get some extra bits from Maplin.co.uk this time. In teh first amp I used a 250k guitar potentiometer for the volume but it's not sensitive enough and really only has three settings (full, quiet and silent). So, this time I ordered this 1k pot from Maplin. When the pot arrived it has a 50mm shaft which is too long for my project. I assume I can just trim the shaft down so long as I'm careful since it's only plastic. Is that right? Also, because it's not a guitar pot, the shaft is smooth and so the standard control knobs I have will not fit it. Does anyone know of a (cheap) type of control knob that will fit such a pot? I really don't want to have to glue a knob on there. Thanks for your help.

I'm back!

As a few of you may know, I haven't been on for a few days (*caugh* over a week *caugh*) due to hardware troubles switching to linux. Being sick of windows tendency to slow down with age and the inability to make that better without a full re-install, I decided that linux mint was the way to go. Long story short, it seems that the standard hardware i've had for a few years didn't like mint or ubuntu much and refused to install correctly, so I did my homework and built my own system which turned out to be about half the price of comparable brand name systems, although I did manage to use the same case from my old system and skimped on hard drives and extra cards. My new hardware consists of an Asus M4A88T-M motherboard, an AMD Phenom 2 X6 1055T processor, 8gb of cheap ram, various hard drives and various dvd drives all stuffed into an old tower. The Ideanator is back, and this time minty fresh!

Ipod Solar/Battery/Wall/USB

So after perusing a few instructables such as minty boost and others, I have decided I shall make a travel charger. Kind of. Basically the idea is an all in one, pimped out ipod case. I have most of the parts already, and I work at radioshack so I can get whatever I need. This case is going to have an external speaker mounted to the back of the ipod touch, directly above a rechargeable battery (nine volt?). The solar panel will be mounted behind that facing outwards and on a hinge that will allow it to unhinge out and act as stand as well.  Hopefully this is making sense.... I'm thinking that the ipod needs to be charged via the battery, which will be charged both via solar and occasionally wall. The speaker I also plan to run off the battery, so this will have to be some battery!  Like I said, I work at radioshack so I have access to all kinds of stuff, so the best possible battery for this scenario is what I'm looking for, along with any advice on this. I'll make an instructable also if anyone would like. Thanks!

Instructables in the New York Times - How to Improve it? Ask Those Who Use It

Instructables was mentioned in the New York Times article "How to Improve It? Ask Those Who Use It" about user-innovation. I know this might cause a stir, but specifically mentioned are the K'Nex guns. Here's the section of the article that mentions us directly:Even some of Mr. von Hippel's acolytes remain cautious. "A lot of this is still in the category of, , 'You could imagine this working out really well,' " says Saul T. Griffith, who as an M.I.T. engineering student was part of a group of kite-surfers who developed products for their sport that have since become commercialized. Mr. von Hippel wrote about Mr. Griffith in his 2005 book, "Democratizing Innovation."Still, Mr. Griffith can cite a long tradition of user design. One of his favorite examples comes from the title article in Tom Wolfe's 1965 book, "The Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby," which chronicled car customizers whose innovations -- tailfins, double headlights, low-slung bodies -- were later adopted by Detroit. Mr. Griffith says that even now, millions of people modify their cars, far more people than the world's automakers could ever employ in research and development. There is currently no effective way for companies to harness the ideas of those millions. But the Web -- itself created by Tim Berners-Lee, an Internet user looking to do something new -- seems to offer an excellent potential idea-gatherer. Mr. Griffith's industrial design firm, Squid Labs, last year spun off a do-it-yourself community site on the Web called the Instructables, which features items as diverse as the Minty Boost iPod power source, dachshund wheelchairs and guns made entirely of K'nex toys, along with detailed instructions on how to build them. The Instructables intends to offer software to companies that want to build communities of citizen product developers.Mr. von Hippel, who has spent 30 years waiting for his ideas to take hold, says that as user communities like the Instructables spread, they will dominate innovation. He calls them "the dark matter of innovation."
