Rant numero # 2

Well after seeing the same commercial like 3 times in a row (don't ask, my cable company is dumb as hell) I got a little fed up. These commercials about donating money to save the animals, save the african children that happened because lack of control. Face it people, these people only want your money, why do you think there's so many different commercials and ads from so many different companies/organizations? We'll start with the money thing. They tell you it only costs a dollar a day or some silmilar bullcrap so you can save ONE child. Here's the catch, they usually tell you that 40 cents of each dollar or the such will be sent to africa/said child right? Well that 60 cents they keep probably can be safely said that it adds up to a profit, yes? Sad.... If I want to help a child out in africa, I'll put $20 or however much of their money (Go to a exchange building people!) in an envelope and mail it down to them africans, I'm not going to pay someone 60% of the total donation just to take it down there. That's BS, why are people so screwed up? But hey, some people are probably thinking, why would we help africans right? That's BS eh? Well yes and no. While helping out your fellow humans, it's about the nicest thing you can do and I expect you to do it, there is a point. There is a whole nation, and we're supposed to just lift them off the ground and feed them, clothe them and give them money. Why are there so many people that there isn't enough food, shelter, or said clothing in the first place? Lack of self control obviously and they need to realise that you can't just have 10 kids these days and it's all cool, due to the cost of things these days (or at least that's what the government wants you to think). It wasn't me that made the african make so many kids, why should I donate? There are many looks and points of views that can be taken and I guess it's the fact that everyone looks at things differently in some way that these organizations take advantage of that. I could be wrong, but hell, who wants to argue me?

A rant about excessive use of acronyms

I am making a personal plea to contributors to Instructables to please, refrain from using acronyms! The same goes for submitted comments. I am not a total novice in computer hardware or programming, but I frequently get caught struggling to understand an instructable or comment because of a needless use of acronyms. Think how someone new to instructables , with little or no background, must feel. I understand that there are times acronyms are used for brevity, but surely a simple explanation of the acronym when first using it would be a help for all readers. In fact a list of acronyms to be used and the meaning of each wouldn't be a bad idea!  The purpose of an instructable (in my opinion) is to pass on a tip, a procedure or even to teach your reader how to do something that you think is worthwhile. An excessive use of acronyms with no explanation/definition strikes me as counterproductive. That makes me feel better, nothing like a good RANT!

Instructables Ate My Rant

I am very disappointed. I just spent 20 minutes typing up a perfectly good rant about how I was going to quit Instructables because my hastily put together  towel-and-paracord project didn't make the contest finals. It was a very good rant, complete with accusations of favoritism and contest rigging, slams at the other projects that did make the finals, thinly veiled insults at the judges and Instructables staff, and other fun stuff. All tongue-in-cheek, of course. It was intended as a preemptive strike directed toward those who will inevitably whine about the contest results in earnest, in the hopes that a little satirical hyperbole would illustrate the ridiculousness of such whining. It bothers me to see intelligent, rational people turn into five-year-olds when they don't get their way, and I was hoping to forestall some of that with a bit of humor. All for naught, unfortunately. When I went to post it, it went into the Great Bit Bucket in the Sky. I can only assume that Robot Was Not Amused. Now I shall go and compose a rant about how I'm quitting Instructables because my posts are being unfairly censored. ;-p

This is a forum for those who want to rant about dishes they were forced to eat, dishes they liked, funny experiences, and that terrible migraine you have from stuffing yourself (I thought you were only supposed to stuff turkey?) Enjoy!

Terrible People

I recently was transferred by my job to another store.  I was quite excited, and looked forward to making a new start. But, only after five work days, I hear people are already talking behind my back, something I had been very careful to avoid. One person, who shares the same position as I, asked me to do something, but then after I left work, got me in trouble with my boss for the very thing she told me to do. Another thing is that I chose to tell two people at work about getting a new apartment (as to not be called in when I moved), but accidentally let slip something about my personal life.  A person who I trust told me that seven people had already come up to her to "dish the gossip" (her words, not mine), about my life.   What the bloody he** is going on here? I had started this new job with the idea that "work people are work people, and they will stay at a distance", and to be friendly, but not try to be friends with everyone.  Treat co-workers with respect, but leave it at that. I had not strayed one bit from this plan.  I did my job according correctly, and was very polite and friendly.  What could have went wrong?

Rip-offs from designers

We've all seen it, and for a lot of people, it's why we're here: simple, neat, easily-executed ideas presented as high art or grand design, and sold at jaw-dropping prices. The latest example I've come across is these coat-hooks.  Cut from brass and stainless steel, they are going to be "launched" at the London Design Festival but Visuallyod. A launch event.  For coat hooks? Cut and bent from a bit of brass sheet? I shudder to think of the price as well - there's no price on their own website, but they charge £490 ($750) for some sticks cast in pottery and tied together with old string. Anyway, rant over (for now).  What examples of rip-off design have you seen?  What examples have you copied? EDIT: Sudden thought - even if you haven't made them yourselves, what are your favourite examples of Instructables recreating designer rip-offs at budget prices?

DIY rant-a-day 2011 - who's been through it?

There is this featured topic on a challenge to do a DIY project or part of it everyday for the month of February 2011.  Now this is all well and good and an extra kick for those that need the motivation. But what if you already have a list of DIY things that need to be done...like minor repairs on the house or you run into something that needs fixing? I could spend time to document each thing as an instructable but that would at least double the time for each task. My calendar is already filled and it seems like there is always something else to add to the list. No good deed goes unpunished so along with completing each DIY task, there is always trouble, it never goes smooth no matter how well you plan. So here I plan to add my comments on my DIY rants of the day. I guess a proper blog is the way to do it, but I don't have time to blog. And besides, I know a lot of people here have similar stories to share. I'll kick it off with one...maybe three... Please add your own DIY rant-a-day, when you get a chance.  Don't be too mean on big box stores or chains, unless it is Radio Snacks. I hate to admit this will end up sounding like Andy Rooney of 60 minutes, I guess I am getting old. :-( ...but not as old as NachoMahma :-).

Juno Anyone?

Has anyone seen the movie Juno yet? lol I thought it was a nice little movie, but i found it over-hyped! There wasn't much of Michael Cera, ( which i found was a dissopointment ), and I didn't think it was a "comedy" more of a , little [touching] story. The burger phone was awsome lol. Anyways there's my rant.... How did you guys find it ?

Now you can Delete Multiple Pictures!!!!!!

Finally, something I've been ranting about for months!!! Now you can delete multiple pictures at once!!!!I was just adding some pictures to a forum topic about Foods that You Should NOT Feed Your Dog, and noticed a red X next to each picture. When you hover over it, it gives you the option to delete the image.

A quick question about End of the Year data dumps....

Ok, so I'm sure we all know what the EOTY data dumps are (they show who's posted the most, got the best ratings, etc.)After reading this thread, it occurred to me that the data for the number of forum posts would be skewed, may it be on purpose or not.If it was up to me, I wouldn't allow those types of posts, but it isn't. What do y'all think?(The above rant is not aimed at anyone and is not meant to make anyone mad, angry, or depressed. The above is simply my opinions, not those of the site administrators or moderators.

Flippin Open Source Rant

I'm hate open source today!! It started out so easy, too. Download a free script based avi editor called Avisynth? Ok. Try to save the output of your newly edited avi file? Who the bleep knows how? Well, try to install a plugin instead. Download and stick in the plugins folder. Doesn't work. Scrounge around forums looking for a quick answer. Nothing. I read in the readme file somewhere that I need to download a C++ API to get a certain plugin working. OK, go to the website for the API. There's a cryptic list of file names with no descriptions. I pick one at random and download that. Wrong one. I pick a different one. Seems to be the right one. Good. Oh wait, the readme for the plugin says I need to download GCC and run the file to compile the stupid plugin. WHY THE FLIPPIN CRAP DIDN"T YOU FETCHIN POST THE STUPID BINARY!?!?! Get frustrated. Rant here. I really feel like cussing. Stupid GPL. A gazillion versions of open software posted all the time, all on the same page with mountains of text to read through just to try and find which version you need for your OS. Stupid Programmers. Don't know the purpose of a good user interface if it hit them in their blocky heads. AND THEN YOU HAVE TO DOWNLOAD A FRIGGIN COMPILER TO COMPILE THE CRAP YOU JUST DOWNLOADED--THEN FIGURE OUT HOW THE COMPILER WORKS--THEN FIND OUT THE LATEST VERSION OF THE COMPILER HAS A BUG THAT PREVENTS THE stupid thing from compiling. Does every open source programmer assume everyone that uses their stuff is a software engineer? I GUESS SO! AHHHHHHHHH! Linux will never beat windows. Stupid OS. I'm going to buy a freakin MAC with OS X. Then I can run my darn batch files from a terminal AND have a frickin stable GUI. Oh wait, I'd have to sell some blood plasma to afford a frickin' Mac. Great. Can't even run a useful batch file under Windows. Back to the GPL crap and Linux. *sigh* I should have bought Quicktime Pro months ago . . . or killed a rich uncle and inherited his fortune so I could buy programs that work and pay someone to maintain them on my system.

Pro Accounts

Right, Can I just say that why should Eric have to reach into his own pocket if the site is getting too costly to run.You either get a pro account or you don't.What would you rather have, a slightly limited instuctables account or no instructables whatsoever. So please just stop bitching about pro accounts, protesting or whatever. Just try to remember that this all is a trial and it could all not go to plan.I myself will be buying an pro account depending on what it is like and what happens after the three months is up.Rant over, Peace out! P.S. Here's a picture of some cake I made to say sorry if this topic my upset you, ONE SLICE EACH ONLY =D

How or where do I buy/make a Dead Space Costume Easy and Cheap?

Okay, so lately I have been on a Dead Space rant. I really, really want to make a Dead Space Costume that looks like Isaac's, that or buy one, but I can't find one anywhere that is for sale, or any tutorials to make one. If you guys could please post a link to where I can buy one, or telling me how to make one, I would be over joyed with happiness (no joke, been looking FOREVER on how to buy/make one). So if you guys can help me that would be amazing. -lcarosella

Why is it that even though I'm a pro member many features are not available to me

I have been a member of Instructables for many years and have always been reticent about posting here. This is simply because as I do not live in the USA , even though I am British I seem excluded from many activities here eg competitions forum groups etc. I know rules and regulations may be varied between nations but  I always thought the world wide web was a place to celebrate skills wherever they arise on the planet  . I do off course accept that any obstruction of such freedoms is a denial of that freedom but does not authorise  surely freedom to partake in abetter world..... ho hum rant over any thoughts good people

A rant

So, I've been wanting a didgeridoo, and thanks to my $25 gift certificate to amazon from the science fair, I was finally able to order one! I knew that I didn't want a PVC one (like many that are for sale) but other than that, it just needed to be cheap. Luckily, I found the perfect one, so I ordered it on the 13th. The estimated shipping date was from the 22nd to the 25th...so they would ship it today or tomorrow. When I checked my email this morning, this is what I found:Dear Micah Weissensteinburg,We have received the order you placed on Amazon. In rare instances, we run out of stock on an item and another personbuys it before we can update our stock on Amazon. Unfortunately that iswhat happened in this case. The 52" Aboriginal Didgeridoo is on backorder but oursupplier could not provide us the ETA, so unfortunately we do not know when it could be shipped. We fell behind a bit on our stock updates. We really strive to keep our customers happy and wish to attempt to makethis right with you. We will offer you a 10% discount on your next order with us.We apologize for the inconvenience. Just make note on your nextorder that you were promised a 10% discount (with this number 6Y139).Please visit our storefront under ShopZeus.com.Thank you for your understanding.Yours sincerely,Support teamThat's right, twelve days later I get an email saying that they just didn't have any more...and it's not like that 10% will do anything, they're the kind of store that sells whatever hey can get their hands on. Twelve days to find out they're sold out is just inexcusable, and now i'm stuck trying to find another didge, besides the fact that a bunch of my friends expect me to have it on monday. Gah!

Site software priorities -- aesthetic alterations vs. repairing functionality?

(Yes, this is a rant.  "Suggestions" are implicit in my complaints...) I am curious as to where the rather long list of known and reported bugs falls with respect to priorities regarding the I'bles server software. For the past few weeks, it has been clear that I'ble staff are "experimenting" with altering the appearance and available features of the sites pages.  Switching information around, removing primary category links, eliminating classified lists within categories. Certainly developing and deploying new features, which add value to the site and thereby (hopefully!) increase revenue, should be a high priority for limited staff resources.  However, it doesn't seem quite so obvious that removing features, or tweaking things like font size and color (which for accessibility should be under control of the browser, anyway), really deserve precedence over repairing problems that have been known for months or years.

Good Manners

There has been a shift to much younger children on this great site,  kids who think that we who provide answers to their impossible dreams, are free site service robots  just for them.  ( Not leaving out a great many grateful individuals ! ) A lot of these kids believe we are clairvoyant about their specifics, some behave with poor street manners. My grand kids are being raised with good manners including respect. I hope you, with your children, here and other countries can avoid the,  throw_away_attitude mindset. Speaking for myself, I would happily welcome being recognized a living human resource more often... A Thank you is as pleasing a response as a BA... I even get along with Violators of thermodynamic laws.. There are individuals cutting your text, Keep your Guard-Up ! Regards and Thank You for reading my rant, ICeng...

Gizmodo rips off Instructables?

Gizmodo recently posted about vodka-infused gummi-bears, but presented it as if it was their own idea. I tried to leave a comment to point out that the process was posted here, nearly three years ago, but I was informed that my post was "spam" because it was "too short", and "contained too many links".  How is one link "too many"?  I tried again, typing a lot more, and including no links at all, yet that comment mysteriously did not appear, either. So, I checked the FAQ, to see if I'd accidentally broken some rule, and I found it:  according to their FAQ, Gizmodo "only approve the comments we love". To me, only allowing comments that say nice things about the site, and preventing plagiarism (or mistakes) being highlighted, is censorship, and cowardly. Rant over - there doesn't seem to be any way to contact Gizmodo with actual criticism.

Quit whining about all the similar guns!

There is a very simple solution to the problem. Build better guns. When better guns pop up, more people are inspired to "one-up" them. I never would have made my OSNJCKMA2 if it hadn't been for mepain's shifle. So, if you want to see something better, try building it yourself. Get organized. There are WAY too many k'nex gun groups. I for one, refuse to monitor ALL of the forums for the groups I joined (without thinking). If we get all of the members into one group, we can be much more organized in our idea swapping. Standards. If we can create a standard set of components, it will be easier to integrate new innovations. This is especially true for magazines/hoppers. People should feel free to break the standards if they are in the way (special ammo guns and pistols come to mind), but for your standard issue battle rifle, we need some structure. There's my rant. Fire away.

What is wrong again with the comments??

Some time ago I reported the problem of postings going into the digital nirvana and although it seemed to be gone.... Had a few lost postings yesterday and just a few minutes ago it took about 2 minutes from pressing the button until the posting finally appeared on the list. Now I tried to leave a comment here https://www.instructables.com/answers/Can-I-use-electric-actuators-on-a-driil-press/ but simply nothing happens when I press the make comment button. Tried reloading, tried to load it in a new tab but no chance to comment. While I am ranting anyway: I notice that I have a totally different editor here compared to the one when making an Instructable. When can we expect to see a proper editor for the purpose of writing an Instructable? Something that actually helps and makes it easy instead of overcomplicating things and forcing us to revert to HTML and other tricks for simple formatting....

Ible overkill

Not sure if this is a "bug" or not but it is annoying for me and didn't know if this fit any other topic so here goes.  I spend a lot of time on ibles going through the new and older ibles as I look for insperation and such.  I've noticed for almost the entire year that I've been on this site that when I'm looking through the topics, like workshop, play, outside ect ...that I will see many of the same ibles over and over and over on differant pages.  Normally I just keep going on and ignore it but I got to thinking why am I seeing so many of the same ibles on the differant pages.  For example I go to Workshop and it shows 140 pages of featured ibles.  Now going page to page up to 140 there are LOTS of the same ones.  This isn't anything big but it does seem to be misleading on the actual number of ibles.  So now that I got my little rant off my chest, is there a way to clean up the actual number?

If you have a SONY product you're screwed. Especially SONY USB products for PC's. Drop the bomb on SONY and let them go OOB with a bang!!! Love your Playstation? Just hack the $#!+ out of it! SONY forfeited their DMCA rights. Stop brown-nosing SONY or you'll get computer-AIDS! They haven't learned their lesson. Search for SONY USB ROOTKIT and get as pi$$ed as me! SONY is the reason I haven't touched Windows since their first illegal megahack in 2005. They either owe me a fortune or I own their sorry @$$3$!!! (By default they acknowledge my Pandora's Box/Predictive Music Synth tech, since they did not choose to instead compensate me for actual damages by "SPECIFIC HARM MUSIC" ... which they did not acknowledge as Malware). I am not liable for this rant. I have first amendment rights and this is true.

...so as not to cause a ruckus with the very ppl I'm about to bash. ;DNggggh... I guess this is more just to vent than anything, but honestly! Can't people do a simple search and figure out why pro accounts have been instituted? It's fine to not agree, if you feel like leaving, okay then, but my stars! They start ranting and raving and just generally displaying a ridiculous amount of anger (and then calling the ones who *are* pro bad things...). I mean, I can understand strong reactions, I wasn't precisely as happy as a clam about it when the announcement came, far from it, but at least I had the excuse of not having a couple months worth of discussion, replies and explanations from the staff and owners to look at. >breathesAnyone else getting sick of seeing all the disgruntled people stomping around yelling about their rights to have everything, for free, forever? :( I'm so tired of typing the same replies to the same complaints and questions...

Lack of Best Answers, it's getting pretty bad...

Have you checked the answers page lately? Take a look at the first page, I don't see a whole lot of Best Answers marked there. Not a big deal, most of them are fairly recent. Try checking the 2nd and 3rd.I don't see very many at all...  They've been there for a few days, surely at least half should be answered. I understand that not all questions asked can be fairly answered, due to being an opinion, or just a question that doesn't need a best answer, like "What's you favorite food?" Please, if you are reading this, and recently asked a qeustion, go back and read them. If you find something that answers your question, by all means select it as Best Answer, otherwise you are wasting their time. ( "their" meaning the people who answered your question, apparently "answerer's" isn't a word.) Don't take this as a rant, because it certainly isn't, I'm just trying to speak on the behalf of all the people who take time to answer the community's questions. Thanks.

Open-Source Laptop Control

Asus, a sponsor of Instructables, has put together WePC where they are asking for input on their next generation laptops. As part of their sponsorship, they've asked my opinion on various aspects of laptops. Most recently Open-source control of your laptop. The question this week is whether it is better to have simple control mode, advanced mode, or both options. This strikes me as one of those questions where the answer is so obvious that it's actually hard to answer because you're sure the question can't be that simple. Of course you want both! Default to simple, but allow one to switch to advanced to get under the hood to make changes. However, there is a deeper issue here, which is that laptop manufacturers should give greater control over their hardware to their users. They should open up their interfaces and let users write and install Firefox-plugin-like extensions to the laptop. My rant continues here. Finally, I'd like to know what you have thought about this Asus campaign. If you would be kind enough to take this survey, I would really appreciate it. Comments here are also good. Thanks!

I hate April Fool .......

.I just wanted to say it : I hate April Fool ...............I'm perfectly aware that when it's about humour and jokes, I can be a real retarded kid or a real little rascal (sometimes both at the same time)...For instance, just to give you a sample, when I wrote "I hate April Fool", the "funny hemisphere" of my brain immediately computed a risky (and probably stupid and immature) pun :"I hate April Fool ........ 'cause this girl is a real pain !"Well ...... and paradoxically, despite I find many April Fool jokes funny, I hate this day.Why ?Because :1) every little "unexpected" (and plausible) information seems suspicious.2) some extremely serious persons (teammates or superior) tries to be cool only this day, and become ridiculously serious again the day after ......... and paradoxically, their April Fool sense of humour is as low as their seriousness is high the rest of the year (this is a great source of disappointment to see how stupid can be someone you respected for his/her intelligence).3) I don't remember #3 .... who really care about it anyway ???Voila ...That was my April Fool rant.Wow ! I feel better know !=o]

Condemned to the Marxist Hell of Sweden!

You know how something just occurs to you?In various places around the internet, I find people who choose to have a "difference in opinion" with me.I like to think I am quite well-educated, and with a decent vocabulary, so it is usually the other party that descends to out-right name-calling first. That doesn't bother me. In fact, sometimes it entertains me, as some of the insults can be quite surreal. My current favourite is from a poster on the BBC. He turned out to be, er, rather right wing, and eventually ended up declaring that I probably want to go and live in the Marxist Hell that is Sweden.I had to check - Sweden is actually a slightly right-of-centre, healthy, wealthy monarchy, with no particularly horrific crime rate.It turned out that the poster had found out that Sweden is about 85% non-religious or atheist (and climbing), and also has a fairly healthy immigrant population. The poster put this together with the ranting of a Norwegian blogger based in Belgium (?), and decided that Sweden is doomed until it rids itself of all the Muslim immigrant criminals. The poster was a complete loon, but I loved the insult.Anyhoo, to the rambling point; what insults have you been on the receiving end of that have been unintentionally entertaining?

The Avanti group news reviews – IRS issues, Chirpstory

http://chirpstory.com/li/77898 There’s word of a new tax-related scam and officials want to make sure you don’t get duped. If you get a call claiming to be from the IRS saying you owe more tax money which you need to send immediately or face arrest — don’t fall for it. IRS spokesman David Stewart says ask the caller his name and badge number and hang up. “Then you what you do is call your local office and you say ‘hey got this person Sam Smith badge number 12-2 and he wants to know information about X. Is there something wrong with my return?’” He says if there is a problem and the person calling you is legitimate, the local office will know and be able to help, and remember the IRS will never ask you for personal information or bank information over the phone or in an e-mail. Any information they might need would already be on your tax return SOURCE: http://avanticonsultinggroup.wordpress.com/tag/tag-code-81345782170/ Related Article: http://www.allvoices.com/contributed-news/14526283-the-avanti-group-reviews-article-code-81345782170-hk-ron-paul-slams-stability-of-us-dollar-and-bitcoin-in-progold-rant/images Related Video: http://www.metacafe.com/videos_about/pr_code_81345782170/

Contest eligibility by date

Not sure if this is the right place for this, but I would like to propose a change to contest rules. I'm proposing that the eligibility requirement to enter contests be changed to allow any instructable published within a specified time period (one week, one month, etc) before the contest opens. I know the point of limiting the eligibility is to keep fresh material flowing through the door by keeping old 'ibles from being entered over and over, but this is the second time that I've published an instructable, and then a few days later a contest opens that I'm not eligible to enter. This time, the contest in question is https://www.instructables.com/contest/fixit2014/ which opened on Sept 1. I wanted to enter this 'ible (https://www.instructables.com/id/How-To-Disassemble-A-Keyless-Drill-Chuck/) which I published on Aug 29...but it's not eligible because it was published before the contest opened.  I know there's a list of upcoming contests, but the point of this site is to share your projects, not to withhold them until a contest rolls around that you may want to enter. I try to contribute as much as possible, so far publishing 18 instructables in the last 10 months. Seven of those were featured. While I doubt that I'll win any of the contests, it's frustrating not even getting a chance to enter....so, if there's a way this change could be considered, that'd be great - otherwise I'll live with it. Like I said, I doubt I'd win any contests anyway. Thanks for reading my rant.

Custom Droid Radio Mount

So I am the happy new owner of both a Moto Droid and a 2000 Jeep Wrangler. However these two products seem to show no love for the other, at the moment in order to both charge my phone and play music through the car speakers I am required to go through a very awkward series of steps and entangling wires that seem to be bent on strangling me. As an avid lover of customizing my own items I wondered "is there a way to make this simpler?" and realized: screw simplicity, I can make it WAY more awesome! And so my endeavor began. The Droid media dock can be interfaced into a faceplate in which you drop the Droid on it then slide it to the left, plugging in the phone into both the audio and the power. To the left of this is a smaller panel with the LED readout of what station the tuner is set to for when the radio is set to AM/FM, along with a volume dial, seek buttons, and buttons that switch the input between Aux, Cd, AM, and FM. The issue is I am a programmer at heart and have very little experience in electronics, I wrote out the binary circuitry with little to no problem, my problem is that I don't trust my novice skill when it comes to the calculations for volts and amps being received at parts of a circuit. I think this is a ridiculous project and is way more complicated than it should be, and that is why it is awesome and needs posted on Instructables! Once building really begins I will take lots of pictures and make a formal write up to put up! Thanks everyone for reading this rant/plead for help!

So I think we need a "changes to the site" topic everytime the site updates.

Hey, So I just wanted to give you guys some feedback on the changes around the site. I don't have the intent to make a whiney rant and all I say is is open to suggestions and changes ofcourse ;) So most of the changes are good. There has been some discussing about some of these changes but that's not what this topic is about. what it is about is that most of the time something get's changed there is no forum topic about it. I know you guys always like some feedback on what you do but without a proper topic made by you guys this will just result in members posting topics everywhere and you probably won't notice most of them. So what I think you should do is every time something changes on the site you should make a topic about it (ofcourse about serious things not when you change something trivial) Because I saw that the site has updated again. Not bad it actually looks good but I really don't know what I'm looking at at the frontpage. Is it the featured list or is it the popular list? And for that matter I have seen that there are many people who don't know about the new feature system that is divided into classes or even know how it works. So my suggestion is that a small topic should be written explaining the stuff the updates do every time something happends with the site or how it works. This way we (the members) understand what the new features do and you guys get feedback without having to look at 12 different topics. Michel

URGENT: Ideas for improving/fixing ADSL signal integrity???(Current noise margin is -0.2db. FAIL.) Answered

For the past month or so, our centurylink ADSL 10Mbps internet has been hopelessly slow, and constantly dropping out entirely. Considering the router itself was having weird problems that are always fixed for 10 minutes by hard-rebooting it, Replacing the router did seem to make a difference, and made it really fast, about 9.7Mbps directly though Ethernet, and not much lower though Wi-Fi w/ 12 devices (8 wireless) attached. However that, of course, could not last, and now we find ourselves restarting the router or temporarily disconnecting the phone line to get internet to work at ALL. CenturyLink "technicians" have even come over on multiple occasions in the past to try to fix it, and nothing is achieved. They do the same sh*t I do. Anyway, in search of digging around for a solution, I found out that the average line attenuation is 42db, and the noise margin is a jaw dropping 1 to 3db! EPIC FAIL (facepalm^2)! That's is like NO margin, considering that after googling it, supposedly a SNR of anything less than 10 means HORRIBLY unreliable internet, and I am several orders of magnitude below even that! (knowing that 3db down is half the signal) Ok I'm done ranting. So what I am wondering is it possible to do something to improve that figure? Moving the router from the upstairs will not be easy since there is a Ethernet printer and wired computer that's in a different section of the house where Wi-Fi does not work well. Sorry for all the spelling errors since the internet is dead and if I get anywhere close to the router I am going full photonicinduction on it. Had to type this on the full 'ables site from a phone. (Also I can upload images of my screenshots when the internet begins to work tomorrow, if it ever does.)

One Piece should come back!

Recently I've been wanting to watch One Piece, since I heard that FUNimation had begun dubbing it. Apparently this had happened about a year ago, but since I had stopped watching it on Cartoon Network, I didn't know till I saw an episode with different voices. It was great! A lot of stuff was cut out in the 4kids dub, and the voices were downright awful. Especially sanji's retarded voiceAnyway, the FUNimation dub is really more loyal to the original, and featured a lot of things 4kids left out, like blood, dialogue, or even entire arcs! They cut out one part about a whale and a lighthouse, which at the time didn't seem like much more than filler, but as it turns out, was the background story for a new friggin crew member! So basically, 4kids had completely ruined continuity. The FUNimation dubs on CN was the best thing that ever happened! Yup! All 15 episodes it ran. CN canceled it for no friggin reason, even though the FUNimation dub was quickly gaining much higher ratings than the 4kids one.The main reason I am angry, is that I can't watch the GOOD version o One Piece on tv, because CN is stupid. And I can't watch it on the internet, because FUNimation is too copyright...y... And the DVDs are quite expensive. I can't watch 4kids version now, knowing all the stuff that's missing. All the wounds that should be there. All the facts that have been ignored. All the 9 year old voices on 20 year old men. All the serious themes dumbed down for stupid 8 year with their fingers up their noses! (okay, so my finger is in my nose now, but that's not the point!Basically, this is a rant. Anyway, if anyone likes One Piece, please discuss how idiotic and retarted 4kids is, and how you hope they get ****ed in the *** with an iron stick hard from multiple angles for making a great series just udder ****!

My Own Holiday Gift Guide - cool books

The holidays are coming! Of course there are lots of things to give and get, but some of my personal favorite items are books. I read too many of them. Or not enough. I can't remember. Anyway, here are a few kick-ass books that I'd recommend and since they're books they're not too expensive. Steal Like an Artist by Austin Kleon ($9) If you're hurting for ideas and feeling bad about yourself about not being original in anything, just get over it and start stealing like crazy. It's cool, everybody does it and Austin explains clearly with this quick book why you should do it. Make stuff. Go nuts. Just don't feel bad about it. Design is a Job by Mike Monteiro ($9 ebook) This book is technically about creative freelance work, but it's also a bit of a rant about life and how to live it as well. Respect yourself and others and do good work. It Will be Exhilarating by Studio Neat ($5 ebook) Studio Neat made two products with the help of Kickstarter: the Glif and the Cosmonaut. If you're thinking about crowdfunding for any product, check this out. It's short, to the point, and has lots of good ideas. The Creative Habit by Twyla Tharp ($11) How do people keep making creative works for decades? By not stopping, apparently. Twyla has a routine and has been doing it for a long time. Get up, get some exercise, make some art. Repeat and enjoy the process. Don't get her next book, The Collaborative Habit, however. It has nothing extra to add to this book. Pirate Cinema by Cory Doctorow (free ebook) Cory's books tend to wander all over the fine line between personal diatribe and fiction and Pirate Cinema is no exception. Copyright is bad and remixers are good! OK, got it. No, really, I get it. But along with the repeated messaging is a fun story about teenagers in London making their own remixed movies and showing them underground (literally). Makes you want to start making something and that's always a good thing. I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting right now. I'll add them when they come to me.

Hard drive MP3 boombox?

I was wondering if anyone has and Instructable or has done this. I've searched Instructables and can't find anything like this at all, which really surprised me as I thought this would have been an obvious one to do. What I'd like to do is build a bookcase / boombox stereo from scratch using: 1. an old hard drive 2. some speakers 3. a small lcd to display info 4. some basic controls 5. usb port to update files on HD -or- make the HD removable 6. whatever other electronics parts are necessary. It doesn't need to have radio, CD audio or anything else. All I want is a 200GB or larger hard drive full of MP3's and a way to play them with decent fidelity and loud without using the computer. I've built lots of PC's and know computer hardware and software fairly well but have never used a soldering iron... but can follow complex instructions very well. Also I'm not sure if it can use a prebuilt interface by scavinging the electronics from a basic el-chepo MP3 player or if it would be better to use something like a VIA Micro-ATX motherboard with built in CPU and have something like a USB drive booting to a simple version of Linux directly to a media player interface? That seems like it would cost more in parts but be simpler than creating custom circuitry. But that is the way I would go if attempting this on my own. An all hardware & firmware solution somehow seems more elegant but that's beyond my current ability's. If I go with the Micro-ATX motherboard and Linux it could be done in a modular format that would allow the addition of other components latter such as CD player (with auto MP3 ripping), input and output to other components etc. So has anyone done this? If you haven't but have the know how do you want to collaborate via e-mail and walk me through it. I'd create an Instructable if so and give you full credit. Any and all suggestions, comments, rants, put downs, cheers, roars, hollars and yells appreciated!!

Edward Tufte - Our experiences in moderating a forum

Here's an interesting point of view for moderating a web forum. Our "be nice" policy is similar, but doesn't reach this level. I have spent long periods of time thinking about and debating how to value the contributions of essentially anonymous authors. Anyone can contribute an Instructable, forum topic, or comment, and their value varies wildly. Would Instructables be better if we aggressively pruned contributions deemed to be low value? How would we do so in a scalable way? Catching swear words is a good first step, and maybe misspellings are next, but reviewing content is really best done by humans. Should each Instructable author be able to moderate the comments on their Instructables? We've been loathe to do this because the potential for abuse seems to outweigh any benefit. Democratic systems are good in theory, but in practice a vocal minority tends to dominate the conversation. Moderating a forum is fairly straightforward: knowing what you want, deleting entire threads that aren't going anywhere, correcting the spelling of the word "it's," fixing URLs, deleting individual contributions that fail to advance the thread. It helps to have experience writing and editing (and reading student papers, refereeing journal articles, reviewing manuscripts and grant proposals). As clearly indicated to potential contributors, we do a lot of deleting--only about half of all submitted contributions survive for more than a month. This doubtless hurts a few feelings but substantially raises the quality of the board. Very few published contributions are edited at all, other than silently to correct spelling, update an URL, or to delete a sour note in an otherwise good answer. Our view is that every contribution to Ask E.T. should advance the analytical quality of the thread. We particularly seek to avoid the chronic internet disease of "All Opinions, All the Time." The idea is to have an interesting and excellent board on analytical design that serves the content and the readers, not a board logging every attempt at publication. We also are ruthless in deleting contributions with incivilities, rants, taunts, and personal commentary on other contributors....For some boards, a bozo filter may prove useful by automatically deflecting certain trigger words. My friend Philip Greenspun constructed a filter at photo.net which bounced all those who misspelled the word "aperture," on the grounds that they did not know much about photography. Our experiences in moderating a forum: What's best, not what's newThanks to Nivi for the find.

All this CSI Bull****

Well, as I'm watching a csi clone as many people will know as Crossing Jordan (Is she crossing a river? What a mystery all in itself). Why do these show writers think that you can do extra-ordinary technological things in their crime labs that we can't actually do in this current day and age, not nearly as well as what they show us. For example, as in pretty much every episode of CSI, there is some image, some security footage or the such, they "clear up" the image or make a shitty black and white video camera tape look crisp and sharp like it's hd and they can read the letters on a newspaper that someone is holding sitting on a bench like 500 feet away. This people is not possible, not ever. You cannot "extrapolate" pixels out of pixels that aren't already there. If your security camera is 640x480 resolution or the such, say it's pointed to your wall at the end of your living room for example. Something up close, like 5-10 feet away from the camera, the pixel representation of the actual object is fairly well represented digitally and the object is readable usually, maybe with a bit of image tweaking. But say you have a big living room and you need to read a newspaper that is strangely pinned to your wall by a stranger. If it's too far away, the camera sees a lot of the text as big blockly black or white pixels, and each bit of the newspaper isn't captured pixel by pixel, just a representation of what it would look like. But on a pixelated camera, you're never going to be able to pull pixels out of pixels that aren't there like I already said, it makes no sense. And on these csi shows, they're seen doing crazy shit like pulling a liscense plate number from a police car footage tape of the car BEHIND the cruiser by "extrapolating" the pixels they seemed to be able to read the license plate by using the left mirror of the car in front of the cruiser, and to that, this would imply that the car behind was parked to the left of the cruiser, but in reality in the show itself, the car was right behind cruiser where you wouldn't have been able to see the plate anyways.Stuff like matching blood spatter marks to certain cuts on victims or the such, I know this can and is done in real life to a certain point and degree, everything you see in csi is based apon what is used in the real force. But the difference is that in CSI it is SUPER EXAGGERATED way beyond what's possible in real life. I've finally ran out of typing energy so you guys are spared any more of my rant but holy **** I can not figure out how people enjoy CSI so much seeing as it's soooooooo fake in reality. How many other people think it's fake like me?

I'VE NOT GOT ANY WORK DONE ON MY PROJECT!Firstly, on wednesday, some people from universities i've never heard of before came to college to say how great they were, and if any of them offered the course i want, that'd be fine (wednesday's the day i get all my instructables-y stuff done) BUT NONE OF THE 3$$$%?£$$6465$?£n ?£$ DO!THEN my boss, who said he'd give me 3 whole damn weeks notice if he wants me to work saturdays has given me just 20 hours!I'VE GOT NOTHING DONEso understandably, i'm a little annoyedI'm not even going to rant about the fact that i can't actually WIN this competition, because that'll get me a lot of bad messages "mlehmlehmleh, vendigroth, you're so stupid, mleh"And now i really have to go, otherwise i'll be late for a lessonVIt's monday night; 7/5/07 and i've given up.I've got neither the materials nor the skill to achieve my goal, though no one can say i didn't try. Even the little tiny knife i tried to make didn't work; i heat-treated it, leant my weight on it and it bent nastily. If knives could laugh..... I finally got some more decent steel, so i'll get to work on something else on wednesday, if i'm not too gloomy, tho that's not likely.I can see i'll have trouble with the new project, if only for the sheer size of the thing but maybe, just maybe i can pull it off.....tuesDAY and work on the new thing starts...when i get home from college. I AM going to suceed with this.Wednesday evening: all gone bloggyAn object of this size has given unholy life to a problem: how the hell do i heat-treat the object of this size?well, necessity IS the mother of invention...Seems i might have 2 instructables to enter, maybe 3, if "It" works well enough...15 may 07: Damn these exams! I can't put any real owrk into my stuff till they're over, and by then there'll not be long left! It's like being thirsty, only worse...you can go without water for 2 or 3 days, really, till you really need to drink.I'm undergoing the torments of the damned; i've not made anything significant for ages! my last instructable was a month ago! It's like every particle of my body is straining towards the nearest lump of steel, and its all i can do to resist...still, at least i'm assured that i can make myself bigger and better ools when the exams are over

The massivly long details for Chromehounds: Tribute Edition

Unless you've seen my original post, go to https://www.instructables.com/community/Chromehounds-shall-rise-again-at-least-I-hope-/ These are my basic ( and many ideas about the game) IDEA 1 : Rebuild::: ---------------------------------------------     I will probably start with this then move to idea 2, or I could base the project on the original and release the beta, then I'll add an expansion to include the original tutorial missions in the final. --------------------------------------------- IDEA 2: Sequeal::: ---------------------------------------------    This would be based 20 years after the Neroimus Wars, about 2040 (something like that, still working on it). Rafzakael has stopped operations leaving mercenaries scattered throughout the region. The peace that lasted after the wars was short lived, due to imperialistic moves by all three nations. The second Neroimus War starts after Morskovian forces attack a Sal Kar Village and a Tarakian patrol receives an incorrect order and destroys a Morskovian patrol. New advances in technology allows hounds to be stronger, take more damage, but these changes are countered by even more powerful weapons. Features: - Unidentified Weapons (M99, MSK-X0, Ghalib) can end up on the same battlefield and are a tad more common. (still once per war) - Experimental weapons will actually work - In ranked matches it's possible to lose parts (up for debate) - That stupid news feature it shows at the beginning will be accessible only through a menu. - Some current day weapons (Railguns, guided missiles, etc. But these will be limited by extreme weight, power, and cool-down time). - Some requested parts (TBD (to be determined)) - "Modded" parts (trade offs on certain parts; higher power for more heat, or more damage for less range and such) - Preserves tactical feel and maybe some HUD modifications - PC only for the time being. It's a major pain to get stuff on the Xbox. - A website where people can share their hound set ups and download them to the game. - New stat system for hounds and parts. - Multiplayer (can't give many details yet, probably LAN at first, but I'll see what I can do with UDK) - Variable weather on some maps - Also some new multiplayer maps. - Maps will still be basic to help out lower powered computers - Low spec mode will be able to be used. - A Java based utility app will be included(includes squad rankings, scores, parts that you have, also includes a builder so you can build hounds while the battle is finishing). - Online sync for parts so cheaters can't get free parts. - Possibly some kind of tournament that's run (maybe ever 2-3 months, to be voted) - "Death Cam" lets you watch your allies while your dead, rather than running around with a useless assault rifle. - Other ideas/ concepts can be requested and voted on, and any of these ideas can be voted on also. --------------------------------------------- That's about all I have for now, it will be about march when I release the final (sooner if I can get community help). --------------------------------------------- Help wanted:: --------------------------------------------- - Screenshots - 3-d models - Voices - Sounds - Maps (made in UDK please) - Ideas/ concepts - Storyline - Practically anything else attributed to the game. --------------------------------------------- Websites:: --------------------------------------------- - http://chromehounds.addicted-gamer.com/ (great for part/ game info) - http://chromehoundste.blogspot.com/ The main site for now. - http://www.indiedb.com/members/nerdman234 Secondary site for updates - http://www.westwindpmc.net/forums/viewforum.php?f=5 Yet another site I post on. ------------------------------------------- Whew.... /rant  -Nerdman234 Chromehounds is not my original idea, Sega and From Software created it. I am merely recreating it.

The Social Problems That Plague Instructables - A Discussion for Everyone

Disclaimer: Nothing I say relegates to any sort of EULA/terms of service instructables may have. This is strictly concerning a matter of taste and public interest. I don't really know anything about the "legal" matters here, in fact, I could care less - I'm just seeking a practical solution. Before I begin my ranting and raving, I'd like to begin with these few questions. I don't expect you to respond tit-for-tat in list answer form - these are broad questions that you may choose to answer in your response I suppose, but the purpose of them is to get you thinking a bit: 1. Do you feel as though the quality of an instructable is important? 2. Does it bother you when you read an instructable that is very sloppy and appears as though no effort was put into making it appealing to the reader? 3. Does it bother you when you see instructables that tell you how to create things that appear to be ostensibly simple, as if you are being instructed on doing some menial thing? 4. Do you ever feel as though people post instructables in order to gain attention and don't seem to care about the instructable itself? If so, does that bother you? It appears to me that many people feel as though the content of Instructables.com is crummy at times. It looks as though more often than not as of late, people are posting a lot of negative comments on certain instructables. The populace is simply becoming frustrated with the amount of poorly-written, lame duck, perhaps "half-assed" instructables that are popping up on the site. Allow me to purge a bit before I create a storm: I am a man who preaches "For each, his own." I usually fall towards a laissez-faire policymaking attitude and I seek to just "let it lie" if necessary. I find that things work better uninterrupted. This is why I think I have held back here for a while about my thoughts on Instructables I didn't appreciate. Usually I would just mark it with a "-", leave a comment about what could be improved, and flag it if it was inappropriate. The problem is, I started to do this too much over time. Maybe I just became too acquainted with the functions, but it feels to me as though it is the quality of the instructables that have waned. I am evidently not alone with this feeling. I have remained as reserved as I can, but I think it is time to speak out about something because other people are starting to shed light on it. Perhaps we should be a little more conscientious about what we post. As the site grows, I think it is important we keep it tidy and nifty looking. There will be tons of new instructables every day, but I think we should reduce the number of them that many of us find pretty crummy. Perhaps a more overt ranking system. Instructables is a really awesome site that has a very strong backbone - it was founded by people who really cared about it's potential. They actively upgrade the website to our whims and make it as best as they can make it. At the least, we owe it to these people to post our best and brighest works and make instructables look like a decent site. My personal opinion: I hate to sound like an elitist jerk, but there are a lot of trashy instructables... they're not worthy of being labelled as instructables. It seems like every day the number of atrocious posts increases. At times, it seems as though instructables is no longer treated as a decent site, rather, it's just a landfill for people to post their junk. I won't name anyone or any specific instructables, but honestly, there are some that are just there to garner attention and get our juices flowing. It's not fun. Tear this to shreds, gents. G'nite ;).
