I believe someone misuses instructables.com for his own agenda

Hi, i believe there is someone using instructables.com for some kind of SEO scam. I believe it goes like this:- Post a mediocre/repeating guide- Add links to different websites, for example to www.american-home-loan.net as seen in https://www.instructables.com/id/How_to_Convert_AVI_WMV_RM_VOB_to_iPod_PSP_Cell_/- Have a highly valued site (instructables.com) link to cheap sites- ???- ProfitI believe the ??? would eventually be remove the guide and point to some site that seels some crap. This is called a SEO scam if i remember correctly. So far i have catched 5 different usernames using that scheme (i believe the same person is behind all of them):https://www.instructables.com/member/byrdcarlyle/https://www.instructables.com/member/disraedole/https://www.instructables.com/member/arlenegeorge/https://www.instructables.com/member/gilmergraham/https://www.instructables.com/member/aliceanton36/Check out the guides, they are basically all the same with a link in the first part at least repeated twice. It all points to the same server and even CMS, however, different hostnames are used.I would like to hear a second opinion.

Is there a relatively safe alternative to vinegar and baking soda for chemical reaction volcanoes? Answered

My brother is working on a paper mache volcano experiment for school, and I figured that the instructables community has come up with something a little more creative than just vinegar and baking soda. When I say relatively safe I mean something that doesn't emit poisonous gasses or toxic waste.  Thanks for any help. Update: I'm not worried about the safety of vinegar and baking soda, I added a safety request because I was almost very stupid mixing chemicals without checking about results. I almost created a gas used to exterminate people. There is no need to lecture me on how stupid this was, I already know.

Black powder is more of a reaction than a burn of fuel and oxidizer.

I did some experimenting with charcoal and saltpetre. While making a charcoal fire i threw in some saltpetre, usually saltpeter alone burns slowly with a molten residue left over, but when i added it to the fire it created a slow burning but intense and bright light that almost melted the steel basin the fire was in. So I did some investigating, firstly I took some 3mm charcaol chips and lit one, then I threw some saltpetre on, again a intense, bright flame appeared, while observing i found that the saltpetre creates a molten pool in which the charcoal 'dissolves', I tried this with sugar, to simulate a smoke mix, but nothing close happened. So it turns out that saltpetre burns sugar when mixed with it, but actually chemically 'reacts' with charcoal. I have a question to add to this, is there any other item in the world that reacts this vigourisly with saltpetre? And if you have some charcoal and saltptre to spare can you pls try this, its really amazing.

Calculate and Display Reaction Time/Elapsed Time

I got my son an Auto World Pro Racing Dragstrip for Christmas.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3SNzDs_NJI  Great fun out of the box with the starting tree that alerts false starts and  identifies the winner at the end of the track.  It does this with electric eyes in the track for each lane that see when a car passes over it.  Like I said, great fun, but we would like to see 1) the driver's reaction time - the time it takes from the time the light turns green to the time the car moves across the eye at the start - and 2) the elapsed time - the time the car moves across the eye at the start to the time the car crosses the finish. Ideally, this would be displayed for each lane until reset.  Total elapsed time and MPH are typically displayed in real life... http://atthedragstrip.com/dragstrip101 I believe this can be accomplished using the existing components in the Auto World kit and an Arduino.  The following instructables could prove useful... https://www.instructables.com/id/Arduino-Controlled-Finish-Line/?ALLSTEPS https://www.instructables.com/id/After-Dinner-Reaction-Time-Tester/?ALLSTEPS https://www.instructables.com/id/Reaction-Timer/?ALLSTEPS I am open to all... better ideas, off the shelf solutions, delivered product, or help developing solution.  This is something I think I could do with step by step instruction but not something I would attempt on my own.  I know just enough to get me in trouble.

Is it possible to prevent the chemical reaction that occurs when a tin is boiled in an aluminium pot?

When a tin is boiled in an aluminium pot a chemical reaction takes place that creates a grey film in the pot. This can be removed with some very vigorous scrubbing with steel wool - it takes hours! Can the chemical reaction be prevented or is there another reaction that can be created that will remove the grey film?

Reaction mass? Answered

The water should be called reaction mass. The reason it makes the rocket go higher than just air is it has more mass to eject. Rocket thrust is a product of (ejected) mass times velocity. Either greater velocity (higher pressure from pump) or greater mass (water) produces greater thrust.

Light-Board reaction time test

So I'm into martial arts and I was surfing the net looking for hand-eye and reaction time tests. I came across this http://www.topendsports.com/testing/tests/reaction-batak.htm The NFL and other sports trainers use it to  either gauge or improve reaction time, it's very popular among boxers and hockey goalies. I want one, but of course it's outrageously expensive so I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how I could make something similar of my own. I was thinking of using LED lights and some kind of pressure switch to register my touching the light. the main problem is I don't have any idea how to make the lights blink randomly. if anyone has any Ideas I would greatly appreciate it thanks!

How do I collect the oxygen from the reaction of hydrogen peroxide and manganese dioxide?

I believe that the reaction between the black, powdery manganese dioxide found within carbon-zinc batteries, and household-variety hydrogen peroxide produces oxygen. However, it is my understanding that oxygen is heavier than air, and will therefore that collecting the gas will not be as simple a matter as seen in steven07's Instructable on producing and collecting hydrogen.Unless I'm completely wrong, and a reaction that produces oxygen will inflate the balloon. :POr, does anyone else have another way of collecting the gas?

I think I have a cool idea, will it work?

I would like to see a scientific 'domino's' event. My idea is that you have a series of containers with different chemical combinations, and they all have entry and exit areas. The containers would have a starting spot, whereby a chemical would be added to the current combination, to cause a spurt to leave the exit point, and enter the next container by the entry point, this would cause another reaction, and the chain would continue to the next container. I'm wondering if the reaction could be continued for 20 containers or more. Obviously an explosion in the chain would break the next container, so each reaction would need to be thought out to produce a spurt. What's more the positioning of each container would need to be perfectly planned according to the power of the reaction. For the container's I'm thinking something like a glass watering can, with chambers inside if needed to produce the right reaction or effect. The entry point would be the filling rea, and the spout would be the exit point. I think it's a cool idea, and I would love to know if it could work.

Aluminum from aluminum hydroxide?

I have some aluminum hydroxide and I have been trying to find a way to strip the Al(OH)3 of it's hydroxide ions to form an aluminum precipitate. It's nonsoluble so a reaction in an aqueous solution does not seem to be an option, also considering that the only other more reactive metals than it would ignite upon contact with water anyhow. Does anyone have any ideas how to accomplish this?

Le chateliers princible?

I'm taking chemistry and in class our teacher showed us two reactions, one called the blue bottle and the other called the traffic light. these reactions are in equilibrium so the reactants are forming products and the products are forming reactants at the same rate, however after a certain period of time the reaction will finish. in the blue bottle experiment the mixture is a clear liquid with methylene blue as an indicator, when the mixture is agitated the mixture turns blue and after a period of time the mixture turns clear again. i thought this was a cool experiment and i think it would be cool if it was possible to create a mixture with methylene blue (or the others like the traffic light experiment have) that can be sealed off and will never complete or wont be having a true chemical reaction but will still have the desired effect.

How am I able to use a potentiometer to cycle through a color wheel for a RGB LED, as well as make it react to music?

I have just started experimenting with circuits and what not, but i need some help, because I'm new, clueless, and trying to learn. My goal is to create a circuit that will allow me to use a single potentiometer to change the color of a RGB LED, as well as allowing an input for music to have it pulse to the beat. For the potentiometer, would that require an Arduino? Searching on Google has not yielded many results but they all tend to use an Arduino, and for the reaction for music, would I be able to use something along the lines of a tip31, like how it was used in another instructable (https://www.instructables.com/id/Music-LED-Light-Box/). Any help or insight would be great. Thanks for your time.

is it safe to store lithium metal in alcohol to stop oxidization? Answered

hello, i extracted some lithium metal from some new lithium batteries i bought at a second hand shop really cheaply . ive extracted the metal from one, but now, after placing it under vegetable oil to store, then putting in water, the vegetable oil works too well seperating the lithium form the water, making small lithium combustion reactions very difficult and i really want to show my friends the marvels of lithium on water, so i want to know, is it safe to store lithium in methylated spirits, or some other hydrocarbon that will evaporate away really fast , and not inhibit the lithium's reaction with water, like canola oil does? clean lithium usually combusts when i put it in water , and the reaction is quite fast. but when i put oily lithium in water, the same does not happen, the reaction is slow, and no combustion occurs unless i use my jet lighter.
