Faux corner fireplace surround with landscape bricks?

Any thoughts on creating a corner surround for one of those electric or gel pack, *ventless* fireplace inserts...using landscape brick? I was thinking: create frame for insert with 2x4s (I have a ton of them laying around) ...I have a nice, *natural*, hunk of wood for the top already but I was trying to come up with something SUPER easy for making the front look nice: landscape block? I see many nice looking structures built of just stacked up landscape blocks and what? are they GLUED together? Just stacked up with like a row on the bottom/front for a hearth? I am sure doing it in the middle of a wall instead of having to cut blocks for a corner would be easier but the way my windows are, the only place I can do it is in a corner as I am putting the TV on it and we have cut block in the past so we can do that part of it :)  I tried to find some examples on the internet and here at Instructables and haven't seen anyone try this yet.... Any thoughts anyone?

My surround sound system wont stay on. What's wrong with it? Answered

I have a Sharp sd-at1000 surround sound reciever, and while trying to hook up a speaker(front left if that matters) it sparked and turned off. Now when I turn it on it says "Hello" on the lcd and stays on for about 1 second before turning back off. From what I've found through research it seems to be a output transistor. Does this sound right? Looking at the circuit board I couldnt find anything that looked bad. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Portable 5.1?

Hey guys, I've got a set of 5.1 speakers from an old non functional home theater system that I'd like to make into something portable, maybe even able to play sound from an iPod or computer. However, I'm a complete newbie to sound equipment and wiring, so does anyone have any suggestions as to how I could go about that? I know I'm not going to keep the 5.1 effect, but just having a portable system with that kind of power behind it would be pretty cool. Thanks in advance.

Surround Sound Help(connection to an Xbox), and my dream media setup

I couldn't decide what forum to put this in(since surround sound could also be a Home thing), but i decided that Music would be best. Basically, I bought a $79 Logitech surround sound system a few weeks ago and hooked it up in my room. For the money, it's pretty awesome. The sound is lacking though, it's fine, but the frequency response is anything but linear. Some songs are more noticeable than others. Either way, I've been looking at the Logitech Z-5500 THX Certified surround sound speakers. BTW, all these are 5.1, not 2.1 sets. The reviews on youtube and elsewhere give it 5 stars, and some go as far to say that the sound matches $500+ units, saying its the best midrange speaker system around. The ten inch sub is appealing too(movies- watching The Patriot would become just that much more real because of the explosions). Reviews say that the satellite's sound is sharp, clear, and pure, no static or buzz. That's definitely a big deal to me. So yeah, the Z-5500 set is $300+...and the others were $79...I think it's worth it to someone who praises music like I do. If you listen to music occasionally, then you might not get where I'm coming from, but I listen to 3-6 hours of music every day, sometimes more. MY PROBLEM:I already installed the surround sound(the cheaper one) in my room, and it would be retarded to get another set. Not to mention a waste of time and money. I need money to buy the nice set. So, my brother agreed to buy it from me if I install it for him. He wants it to be hooked up to his Xbox 360. Good deal. However, I don't know what kind of output it has. I think its a Toslink Optical Audio output, but I'm not sure. The "receiver" on the sub has three inputs, a black 3.5mm female input, as well as a orange-red and light green input of the same type. These are the direct analog inputs to the speakers; it was a cheap set so they don't have an optical in.MY QUESTION:Assuming that my brother is still interested by the time I have the money to buy those speakers, do they even make a Toslink Optical adapter that will work? I tried google, but I wasnt sure what to search for. Thanks. Also, if anybody has the Z-5500 system, let me know how you like it!My hopeful media setup:Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop with vista2TB Mybook External hard drives(two 1TB drives, either in a RAID setup or not, idk)Videosecu VGA to Component Video adapter32" TVCreative Sound Blaster external 5.1 surround sound cardLogitech Z-5500 5.1 surround soundDream setup:Mac Pro with dual monitorssome kind of adapter to get the video to the 32" TV aboveSame surround soundSame hard drivesSome kind of surround sound cardBasically the only difference between my (hopefully) future setup and my dream setup is the couple thousand $$$ of Mac and Apple stuff. Apple is so much better, but it comes with a price most of us cant afford. It's really too bad lol. For the first setup I only need the hard drives, the surround sound card, TV, and the surround sound to make it complete. Of course, theyre the most expensive parts...darnThanks!

How would I go about building an amp with a variety of (specific) inputs and different types of outputs (connections)?

Okay, so I would like to build an amplifier or something that powers several speakers, as a stereo. I would like to be able to have several inputs such as RCA, 3.5mm or 1/4in headphone jacks, perhaps HDMI if possible, coaxial, SPDIF, and perhaps some banana plugs for audio experiments or something like that. I am not sure of what type of driver would be necessary to power a sub-woofer separately, or how to integrate that into such a system. I have noticed that for 7.1 and 5.1 surround sound systems they have specific out puts for different speakers in assorted locations, and I do not know if they have different frequencies, or only part of the sound. How would I create that? I suppose if necessary I would build it from schematics, but I would like to avoid creating several circuits on separate power inputs. Also how does the ohm rating of speakers affect the output? Any help is greatly appreciated, and I am sorry if I come across as un-knowledgeable.

Guitar Hero 3 For Wii Disk Audio Flaw

I was meaning to post this sooner but completely forgot. Anyway, If you don't already know, Guitar Hero 3 Legends of Rock for the Wii has a disk flaw. The flaw makes the sound in mono instead of the Dobly Digital Surround Sound that is advertised on the box. Activision will replace it for free though. The way you can tell if you have a flawed version of the disk is if you look right above the Activision logo and if theres a little white star there or not. If there is one you have the new version and don't need a replacement. If not you can go here, fill out the form and then they will send you an envelope for you to put your old one in and send back and then finally you get sent a new version. I just thought I'd let you know. Good Luck!--Note-- If you send them a disk thats anything other than the old version of the Wii GH3 game they won't send anything back.

Can you splice audio cables into the back of a receiver?

Hey all, I have a 5.1 sound system hooked up to my computer's sound card. The front, rear and sub each have separate amps. However, I am not running a center speaker. (ie. quadraphonic with sub. or 4.1) I am wondering if it would work to route the center output into the amp for the front speakers. i would simply splice the wires so that both center and front signals went into the same connector on the back of the amp? What I am wondering is if doing this could mess up my sound card.

new bed.. ideas?

Ok so its time I finnaly got a new bed. I've already though about some cool ideas of what to do with it and I wanted to see if anyone would want to contribute aswell. My first idea was to take the legs from my loft bed and put them on the corners of my normal bed. so essentially a normal bed with 4 large post at the corners, from there I would to stretch some sort of canvas or muslin at the top attached to each one of the corners and use https://www.instructables.com/id/DIY-Projector-on-the-Cheap/ to project whatever I want onto the screen whie I lay down. Another idea I had was to take 2 sets of computer speakers I have and place 1 on each corner of the bed then attach them to a radio which I could use to play music through fm transmiter plugged into my laptop. I already have acumulated most of this stuff around my house so it shouldn't be too hard, but before I make any more steps into the project I'd like to hear your opinions on this.

Do Tritton AX PROS still have surround when plugged into analog(on Xbox 360)?

Hello, I've been looking into buying a better pair of headphones to replace my dying X11s, and came across the Tritton AX PROS(the ones for consoles, not the cheaper PC/Mac only ones). Dad and I went over all the stuff today, and we've run into a problem: The only open ports on my Xbox 360 HDMI dongle are analog. Before you say "well, just unplug the optical," those optical cables are FRAGILE. Like, you bump 'em the wrong way or plug in/take out the wrong way, you've got a broken cable. And I can't afford to do that sort of thing, because if it breaks, then Rock Band(which I play through our surround sound system) is pretty much done for. I was wondering if you can do surround sound through the analog(I know you normally can't), because of the little box thing it comes with. Best answer gets a cookie and subscription. Also, I don't want speculation, I want fact. Thanks, Builder968 BTW, links- Tritton Technologies- AX PRO 5.1 Surround-http://www.trittontechnologies.com/index.php/products/gaming_audio_technology/ax-pro/ Amazon.com link-http://www.amazon.com/Tritton-Digital-Precision-Gaming-Headset-Pc/dp/B0017IUFAE

Hook up stereo speakers to computer for surround sound

Alright, if theres already an instructable on this, I apologize, and could someone point me to it, otherwise, here's my question: I have a set of stereo speakers, the ones with the clips that you use to hold in the wire, so it has no plug. The only stereo set I have has no outputs, no white and red RCA jacks, or anything, and I do not have any other reciever. Is there any sort of adapter I could buy or build cheap (easily, preferably) to let me plug two of those into a standard 3.5 mm miniplug? my goal is to use those as rear speakers for my computer's 5.1 surround, as they have good base and treble, and my 2.1 channel set that I was using there crapped out. Thanks!

electic generator

I have not made this yet, but my idea is building an electric generator using a bicycle wheel surrounded by a non turning metal frame. Tightly backed on the bicycle wheel would be permanent magnets arranged in a slant pointing in the same diection and outward toward the surrounding frame. On the frame would again be permanent magnets wrapped with copper wire slanting inward toward the bicycle wheel. The magnets facing each other would have like poles. North facing north or south facing south. I know this is just like an electric motor so far. You would get the electricity from the arrangement by placing a thin copper stip on the top of the frame. But different from the motor is the idea that like poles repel. once you gave the wheel a slight movement in the same direction that the magnets slant the wheel would turn until the magnetic energy would exhaust. You could make strong magnets using rebar wrapped in copper wire and use a inverter to change the AC in your house to DC and connect the current to the copper wire surrounding the rebar. Then when the magnetism of the rebar is sufficiently strong cut the rebar using a hack saw into small pieces to place in either the bicycle wheel or metal frame surrounding the wheel, I'm not sure of the electric power dynamics you could produce, but it would seem that using strong enough magnets could make a generator that could power as large a device with amperage/volts you can create. It might be used as a device to run your furnace blower or refrigerator in an emergency if the power produced was high enough. I think this would all depend on the strength of the magnets you produce. But if it works-you could have electric power from the magnets as an alternative to batteries or gas driven generators.

How would I make a simple Infrared Heater?

I am planning on build ing IR Heater. would a 6 millimeter IR emmiter with 960 millimeter wavelength work to produce heat? If your not aware with IR heaters then here is a short explanation: A normal heater such as a gas heater heats up the surrounding air, but a IR heater uses infrared waves to heat up surfaces of objects. So instead of heating surrounding air the IR waves heat up surfaces of objects. Also IR waves penetrate the epidermise (top layer of skin). Here is a diagram of what the circuit looks like. The question is would this circuit work? Also are 6millimeter IR emmiter with 960 millimeter wavelength work?

HDMI converter request

So what do those of us with old surround sound receivers with no HDMI inputs that we either don't want to part with because in every other way they are just awesome pieces of equipment or we simply can't afford to replace them do? It seems that no one sells an affordable, quality HDMI to RCA converter that can easily go between modern components like Blu-ray players and older receivers.  So what can we pirate one from and what would be the best way to do it? Ideally it would split out all the surround channels or convert to a single digital RCA cable.  I'm more concerned about sound, because TVs wear out and get replaced faster than receivers, so odds are we have an HDMI ready TV.  I don't object to video as part of the project, it just isn't necessary (for me).
