Communication system for Race Car

I am part of a low-budget auto racing team that competes in a series called ChumpCar.  We recently bought some two-way radios and are looking to get the car wired for them and also the helmets wired. I have been looking at a number of racing supply web sites for the parts and am astonished at some of the prices. I am wondering if there is money to be saved by making these ourselves?  And, if so, where should I start? Here are some of the parts: http://ped-products.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=31 http://ped-products.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=23 http://ped-products.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=46 Here is an article that shows how the mic kit is installed: http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/articles/wiring-helmet-radio/ Thanks in advance, Evan

How Google Talk's popularity changed over time, from it's begining?

Also compared to other IM's in the world. Links to surveys highly welcome, but not to those that suggest 4k users worldwide. Not quite belive them.

Kiteman, out in public...

Dorkbot Anglia is a regular evening of talks and conversations with "people doing strange things with electricity" in the East Anglian area. We are delighted to announce our seventh meeting as the guests of the CSV Media Clubhouse on Thursday 24th November. Entry is free. Thursday 24th November 2011, 7:30-10pm CSV Media Clubhouse, 120 Princes Street, Ipswich, Suffolk, IP1 1RS (About five or ten minute's walk from Ipswich railway station) This time, there's a special guest ... Edit: It was a grand night, lots of folk went home with a determination to try the site, plus a new t-shirt. Even better, Tim Hunkin was in the audience! Afterwards, we speakers and the organisers adjourned to a pub called St Jude's for some excellent beer and, frankly, a rather random conversation.  Some interesting ideas about mixing the concepts of 3d printer and laser-cutter, though...

Things a plant would say...

I'm working on something fun...  We'll leave it at that for now. I need a nice, long list of things a plant would say to a human.  Humor and biology geekiness are welcome!  Patches to folks who come up with the most phrases or the best phrases.  Keep it PG though, ok? Here are some examples: "I think you should become a meatatarian" "So when are you going to evolve and run on sunshine, like I do?" "Gahhh!  Aphids!  Get 'em off!  Get 'em off!" "I'm thirsty.  Water Me!" "Audrey II is my hero." "No worries, baby - I'm organic!" "When you belch it's like a breath of fresh air." "My pistol is useless against insects!" "If you kill me, I think you should try a rock garden next."

I found this video very interesting because it actually gives a proper solution to a big problem. It even uses a material that is pretty much abundant in our world (carbon). the use of this material would open alot of independant project and automated. I dont have alot more to say but I think this would be a great stimulant for a collective mind. Any ideas what you would do with it or where you would want to see it?

Instructables Internship - Day 7 (Day @ Google!)

Sorry to keep you guys waiting, I've just been so busy having fun, etc ;)So, without any further adieu, Tuesday through Thursday! (in four separate posts, so that I don't overwhelm you)Tuesday: Google Day!So, yes, it's true. I got to go to Google to talk a bit about Instructables. Yes, it's true, I'm a terrible speaker. And yes, it's true, Google is awesome!I had so much fun at Google, I'm so glad that we (Billy and I) were able to go. We got to see Stan, the t-rex standing outside in the courtyard. We got free foodstuffs and shwag. We saw SpaceShipOne (I think it was a model, though), and had a great time. It's really cool inside Google; everyone's desk has something strange on it, some people are even in "tents." it's just wacky to the max. Unfortunately, my camera died after a few minutes in Google, so I wasn't able to take too many pictures for you guys v_v sorry. There's actually a video of about 1/2 of the talk up on Google Video, and it's already on the Instructables Blog hereAfter Google, we went back to Squid Labs, where Jason and I worked on and pretty much finished up Project X. All we need now is some fine-detail work and it'l be done! So, it turns out that Tuesday was the annual Squid Labs' Intern Barbecue Day! At 6, the BBQ started, but Jason, Noah, Billy, and I were all out in the back, "testing out" Project X. After a few attempts, and an attempt to modify Proj. X, we decided that our brains needed some food to operate in a more functional manner. The BBQ was nice, there was quite a bit of food, drinks, and socializing. TimAnderson and others were flying kites up on the roof-patio (where the BBQ was held), in a mostly-successful manner. We watched the sun begin to fall, and as Squid Labs has the best view of San Francisco, it was spectacular. Unfortunately, my camera was inoperable... due to lack of battery power, and I didn't get any shots of the sundown. v_vAnywhoo, We all got Squid Lab 2007 Intern T-shirts, which were pretty damn awesome. There's a pic of them at the end of the post. After, Jason, Noah, Mike, Mitch, and both of their girlfriends (Erica and Jenna) came down off the roof-deck to help perfect Proj. X. We did quite a bit of work on it, but after several failed attempts, we knew what we had to do. Unfortunately, it was getting really late and we had to stop working on it for the night. Work will continue on Wednesday! Then, Billy and Star (Starsterisk) were going to watch The Boondock Saints on the projector in the conference room, so I joined them for a bit. We (Eric, Christy and I) got home around 10:30... pretty DARN late....Cheers,-Muffinator

Brainstorming - Teamspeak PTT Bluetooth Device

Gurus of the Tech World, First off, I'm browsed through a lot of great idea and I've got to say, you all are geniuses.  Hopefully, someone can help steer me in the right direction.  I have made a few Windows Phone apps, made a few HTML websites and some networking fundamentals, but I've never really made a device... much less soldered a board. With that said, I want my first project to be a Bluetooth Push-to-Talk (PTT) button for Teamspeak.  I have a Bluetooth headset with a microphone for Teamspeak (VOIP PC Application) so I can hear people speaking while being away from the computer but I do not have a way to communicate back using the Push-to-Talk method. So, what I want to do is make a small Bluetooth device, maybe powered by a 9V, with a single PTT button, and maybe an ON/OFF switch to save power.  My thought is to program it so that it send a keystroke to my computer for the duration that the PTT button is pressed (CTRL would be ideal).  This is something that I want to make, using as much of my brain as possible and the least amount of prefabricated merchandise ("omg, just buy a bluetooth dongle and plug it into a button. ta-da"). I'm sure that this is something you guru's can do blindfolded, but, please, point me in the right direction... and use baby words. Thanks! Stryker2k2 (@stryker2k2)

Using Arduino For Communication Device?

Hi there, I'm currently working on a University project for my Final Year and currently have some proposed ideas for a social device which can be worn or attached to clothing. My plan is to create a device which sends messages or other information using a sender/receiver which then stores the information, ready to be read later either through USB or simply viewing it on the device itself. It may even work in a similar way to another, similar project I have found on Instructables (see below). The user would simply wear this item of clothing in a specific environment (such as a nightclub - speaking hyperthetically) which would allow communication between people just by walking past another person with the same device. Think of this as a close-proximity, P2P-type device for communication. https://www.instructables.com/id/Arduino-Lilypad-Interactive-Passion-Sensing-Scarf/ I have talked the project over with my peers and found that there are two main options to creating such a device, which are: - Use several Arduinos (one for each user) which send and receive information via RFID Readers/Writers (again, a set of each for each user) attached to the board. One problem with this is that it will be incredibly bulky and unlikely to survive being washed or put through the punishment that clothing often takes on a daily basis. - Use a central Arduino board which receives information from Arduino XBees which receive information from the central Arduino and are sent information back from it. One problem with this is when several devices come into contact with each other, the central Arduino will be unable to tell which message has come from and should go to another device. However, one plus point with this is that I've heard XBees (Series 2 only) will be able to send and receive information on their own and are incredibly small. If you have any ideas on how this device could be produced or if you have any comments on the above, please let me know. I would greatly appreciate any feedback you may have. Cheers, KugarWeb.

Climate Change Recalculated Talk with Saul Griffith

"It is not accurate to say we can still stop climate change," says Saul Griffith, the Bay Area inventor who received a MacArthur "genius" award in 2007. "We are now working to stop worse climate change or much-worse-than-worse climate change."Griffith has done the research and the math to figure out exactly what it will take for humanity to soften the impact of climate change in the next 25 years, and he lays it out in a dazzling presentation. It is horrifying news. The politics and technologies we have now are not up to the task.Friday, January 16, 2009Doors open 7:00pm, talk at 7:30pm lasting ~1.5 hoursLocated at Cowell Theatre in Fort Mason Center, San Francisco, CAhttp://www.longnow.org/

Can someone help me figure out what kind of technology is used for this shirt?

I was on youtube and ran across a video with Diane Eng (I love her fashion technoloy work!) doing an interview and in that interview she was wearing a shirt that the LEDs would light up when anyone spoke. I've never heard of any kind of technology like that and wondered if anyone on here had. If so can you please explain to me what it is and how it works. Thanks! Here's the video I was talking about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6PfWLc7YhI

I need people who can speak

I have a theory, that I will be able to wake up easier if someone who's voice I don't recognize tells me to. I am asking if anyone who can would record their voice saying: "It is time to wake up now" After this is recorded save it as a mp3 or wav and upload the file and post it in a comment below. Thanks!

James Haskin's talkbox voice modulator mod!

Www.instructables.com/id/Make-A-Talkbox/ Ok, so after watching James' video and looking through the instructable this is the nicest construction of a talkbox for almost no cash what so ever, for those of you that havn't seen it the link is at the top.. James uses a DPDT switch on the guitar.. For my purposes though have the switch on the amp.... well its not as user friendly as need be.. I was wondering how hard it would be to make a seperate footpedal to activate this talkbox...something alittle more professional than just longer wires to a small box with the switch there.... unless that seems to be the right way? I'm not sure maybe i just over anylized the situation, could it be that easy? i was thinking of adding a resistor and an LED (although) you will be able to know when this is running it would just add alittle touch to it you know?

Giant Robot Architecture Talk by Greg Lynn in Berkeley

Here is an interesting talk from the Art, Technology, and Culture Colloquium of the Berkeley Center for New Media...Giant Robot ArchitectureGreg Lynn, UCLA & Angewandte, ViennaMonday, Feb 4, 7:30-9:00pm- Note Special Location: Berkeley Art Museum Theater- Enter on Dwight Ave: http://bampfa.berkeley.edu/visit/visitor- Lecture is free and open to the publicAbstractRobots. In my office, my staff keeps asking for more new machines, and every time I get a new machine, I fire two or three people. By extrapolation, in the next few years I will be sitting in an office by myself with a bunch of robots. We have is a very large CNC (computer numerically controlled) cutting machine, a laser cutter, a 3d printer, and soon we will have a robotic articulated arm. All of these things let us do studies of models, which are very important to architects, but what they also let us do is learn machine language. We spend more and more time talking to machines; speaking their language. It is very easy for us to go to any country that has an automobile industry or an aircraft industry and give their machines instructions and do things with these large machines at an architectural scale that is very perfunctory and affordable. The spread of machine language and programming is more significant than the Anglicization of the world. Learning to talk to robots is very important to my field of design.Speaker BioGreg Lynn is a leading pioneer at the intersection of computing, design, and architecture. His architectural designs have been exhibited in both architecture and art museums including the 2000 Venice Biennale of Architecture where he represented the United States in the American Pavilion. His work is in the permanent collections of CCA, SFMoMA, and MoMA and has been exhibited at the Pompidou, Beyeler, Cooper Hewitt, MAK, MoCA, NAI,Carnegie, ICA and Secession museums among others. In addition to his architectural work, his Alessi "Supple"Mocha Cups and his Vitra "Ravioli" Chair are in production and have been inducted into the Museum of Modern Art's Permanent Collection. He received the American Academy of Arts & Letters Architecture Award in 2003. In 2002, he left his position as the Professor of Spatial Conception and Exploration at the ETHZ (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich) and became an Ordentlicher University Professor at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. He is studio professor of Architecture at UCLA and the Davenport Visiting Professor at Yale University. Greg Lynn holds degrees in architecture and philosophy and received an Honorary Doctorate degree from the Academy of Fine Arts &Design in Bratislava. In 2001, Time Magazine named him one of 100 of the most innovative people in the world for the 21st century.
