related to electric vehicle?

I am going to make an electric vehicle so my question is that how to calculate cost per unit, cost per mile for an electric vehicle? and ways to overcome weight issues so that when a person sits on the vehicle, the speed does not reduce or less.  I am asking this because i want to make a vehicle that will cover many miles with less battery efficiently. I hope that everyone understands that what i am trying to ask

multiple speed setting for an electric vehicle?

Suppose an Ev had to run on different speeds say 30 miles/hr and 40 miles/h and vice versa. So how will the the current and voltage changes according to this situation. Say you have a 400w motor and torque is known already and is calculated according to the required acceleration. In short if you have an Ev and u want to set the ev run on different speeds what are the quantities that have to be checked or monitored (current, voltage) and .If you move from 30 to 40 miles/h what will happen to the variables?

Making an amphibious vehicle, but then had a problem...

After watching that one episode of BBC's car show "Top Gear", the one where they do their first attempt at amphibious cars, I had a design idea for one. But after thinking about it for some time, my design brought up some classification questions. 1. In the US, any vehicle with less than 4 wheels is considered to be a motorcycle. If the vehicle I have in mind operates like a car, but has the classification of a motorcycle, AND it can operate as a boat, would it be legally appropriate to label it as an amphibious motorbike or an amphibious car? 2. Taking hydrodynamics, weights and buoyancy into account, the vehicle design so far could hold 2-3 people. If it was two, then the seats would be arranged vertically. If it was 3, then they would be arranged as a triangle. So if it was a three seater, would it be better to have two at the front or at the back? That's all the questions i can think of right now.

Plastic Vehicle Body

Hey, people. I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask questions about this sort of thing and I can't find anything on the web on the subject. I guess not too many people want to build a vehicle body from scratch. Anyhow, here's my situation. I have a large mobility scooter which I would like to transform into something nice for a Halloween parade. I can't do anything too fancy or professional looking because I don't have the resources for something like that. What I think I'll do is build a frame over which I'd bolt sheets of plastic that are cut in particular forms. Then I'd paint the whole thing with spray paint and touch up with an airbrush. What I need to know is which materials to use. There are all sorts of plastic out there. I won't be forming anything with heat, so at best I'll only need plastic that's not too thick and has a good surface for painting. Also, I don't know what to use for the frame. If you don't know about the materials, any sort of advice or encouragement would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I am busy with DIY Electric Vehicle in Cape Town South Africa, I need some input?

I am a Motor Mechanic for almost 30 years and I want to change to Electric Motor Vehicle. But I want to construct a Cheaper Method of ConversionI have already designed and configured my drive line to attain high speed using Low power input. I am using a light Motor for the Conversion AC 3.7KW Motor with 3.5 Amp Single Phase. I am also designing  the Alternative Charging Controlling mechanism to and input controller to top up the Batteries.  Using only 6 x  12v 100 am Batteries, I know its low but the Motor will be consuming such low power that it would not need extra Batteries.  Now my question What Electrical components,  Required  I am using a 12 v 1000 w Sinewave inverter, with wellsee power control  now setting up the Curtis Electronic Pedal for the variable drive, what mechanism can I use and disconnecting the power in high speed and switching to the alternative power source. Any suggestions.

Device to pull a garden cart?

I know how to build a garden cart but I want a device to pull it. I want to be able to sit on it, to control it. I thought about a bike but I was wondering if there was anything I could build that I didn't have to pedal, ect. If I have your permission, I might make an instructable about the top answerer's idea*. If anybody has a question on instructables question, I will try my best, no doubt, to answer your question. Even after I have chosen the best answer, you can still tell me your questions and I will try to answer them until, I don't know, the end of January.  *I will put in the Instructable, if I do one, the name (screen name) of the best answerer. I will note it throughout the process of the vehicle to pull the cart.

Heat storage device for car cabin heater

I want to increase the heat storage capacity of the existing car heater so that I can run the heater (just the fan and a liquid pump) while the engine is off and so I can have a warm car as soon as I start on a cold day. The current heat storage is the coolant circulating in the engine. I want to increase the capacity of that. Instead of simply attaching a liquid reservoir to the heater circuit (to increase the coolant volume), I was considering using a picnic cooler (insulated) box with a coper tube coiled in it. The box would be filled with oil and paraffin. Paraffin melts ≈ 40° C  and I can take advantage of the latent heat of fusion when the paraffin changes phase. The oil is a medium to suspend the paraffin. I need a recommendation of an electric 12 volt pump to circulate the fluid. I request any other thoughts or criticisms.

Human Electric Hybrid Vehicle

The HE Human Electric Hybrid Vehicle It looks like an interesting concept car. Although, it might be hard to find somebody who wants to pedal it. I really like the solar panels on top, and how on the downhill, it charges a capacitor for energy. This HE Human Electric Hybrid Vehicle concept uses the power of your muscles as well electricity stored in the batteries. It allows smooth and constant velocity both uphill (with the help of the electric motor), as well as downhill (when the wheel acts as a generator and charges the batteries). The vehicle can turn 360 degrees maintaining stability all the time. Additional power is acquired from photovoltaic placed on top of the vehicle as well as during de-acceleration from regenerative braking. Elderly and handicapped people that are unable to provide enough kinetic energy can also charge the batteries directly from the grid.

I am making an electric vehicle. Assume no friction on a flat surface. The vehicle will have two dc electric motors preferably 24v or 48v system as space is an issue(about 3.5 x 4 feet) one motor on each drive axle. The vehicle will weigh 2000lbs have a max speed of 10miles per hour be able to reach max speed in under 5 seconds overall wheel diameter will be 16 inches Can be geared down to attain needed torque but must go up to 10miles per hour. Please include formulas so I can at least know how to do this in the future. I need to know power, torque, rpm needed for electric motor. Thank you

Here’s the specs:Wheel weight = 100g Wheel radius = 3” Wheel axis radius = 2” Vehicle weight = 10kg Speed I want to reach = at least 20mph with ease.Because I’m using four motors, I’m assuming torque needed would also be 1/4 of total torque needed to move the vehicle.Thank you! I appreciate any help!

Unmanned vehicular robot fuels itself

03.05.09 -- In all the futuristic visions of robotic technology, there's always one buzzkill that brings them back to reality: the power source. How do you keep robots rolling smoothly? The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is funding the development of a robot that may have the answer to this.According to company president Dr. Robert Finkelstein, Robotic Technology, Inc. of Potomac, Md., is developing the Energetically Autonomous Tactical Robot (EATR), an unmanned vehicle robot designed to collect biomass leaves, wood, grass, anything combustible and use it through burning to fuel itself. "The idea is to have a robotic ground vehicle that can go out on long-range, long-endurance missions without human intervention," says Finkelstein, describing it as the ground equivalent of long-range unmanned air vehicles. The EATR will be able to retrieve items of interest as well, or act as a weapons platform....In addition to its military applications, Finkelstein also envisions other applications, such as border patrol or agricultural is the link to the full article

I'm currently working on a mech but I need to get an idea on the interface system, so what would be the best fit for it?

Actually I'm working with a few others on this but (as you would expect) our funding is quite low. Right now however; we're trying to decide what the best type of interface system we could use on our mech (yes a REAL, FULL SIZE, WORKING, Mech.) and so I'm turning to the Instructables community for help. Thanks in advance, Jake PS: If you want in on the project then you can email me ( with a list of skills you believe could be useful in the building process and I'll get back to you asap or if you just have a question about it that's fine to. [edit] And to respond to my first (and currently only answer) thanks for the help btw, the motion tracking is a great idea and would help improve the user interface greatly. However, what I'm referring to when I say 'interface' is how you would control and interact with it, your reply was part of the answer and will (hopefully) be implemented into our UIS (user interface system). Thank you and I hope to get many more answers soon. Jake

FS: BIG electric motors

've got three 36v forklift steering motors. They're big, beefy, and used. Rated as 1 1/3 HP "special" duty. They draw 4.1A no load at 36v. With the gearbox, they draw 4.3A no load. Speed for the motor alone 3225RPM , with the gearbox is 75RPM. Torque must be something outrageous. They have an optional mating 43:1 Sumitomo-made gearbox which I reckon would make these some great drive motors for a large heavy project. Without gearbox, they would be excellent for go-karts, suicidal ebikes, etc. I even know of a e-car project that used a similar motor. (forkenswift) The motors alone weigh about 18lbs. Not sure what they weigh with the gearbox. You want one. I have three. I'm asking $100 each for the whole motor/gearbox shebang. Pictures:

Ideal Gear ratio?

Hello i am competing in a design challenge at school. were were each given a 9v 12000 Rpm Motor, the object of the challenge is to build a land vehicle that can go 10m as fast as possible. we will be holding a race on november 3rd to see who has designed the fastest vehicle. anyway my question for the community is using a 12000 rpm electric motor what would be the best gear ratio to use between the motor and the axle to optomise take off speed as well as having a high top speed. (if the gear ratio is to high then the car wont accelerate fast enough to low then the car wont have a fast enough top end) so basicly im looking for that perfect med ground. if anyone here has had much experience with gears and help would be great thanks (PS the vehicle cant be any biger then a vhs case but can be as tall as i want it)

Robot Pegasus design possible? Answered

Ok, so I have another idea that will most likely never get anywhere due to my lack of funds/it not being possible.           What if I made a magnetic track somewhat like a maglev and had a robotic pegasus with electromagnets in its feet. It would also be an ornithopter to get it farther than a few inches off the ground. I would have the magnetic track to have it hover a few inches off the ground for about a minute before and after takeoff to make it less likely to crash on landing and give a minute to text the mayor to not worry about any upcoming pegasus sightings above or around town before taking off.           What kind of horsepower engine would I need to power the wings enough to get sufficient lift (at least 15-20 feet)? And would the electromagnet buffer before landing be significant enough to at least lessen the impact so it doesn't maim/kill you if you crash?           The electromagnets don't seem to me like they would work, but it would still be fun just to hover it to show it off without flying up 20-30 feet and worry about falling. Also, would it make it too heavy to fly if I put in an extra motor to make it walk/run so it doesn't have to be flying to move? I don't really expect this to be within my budget, but it would still be cool.

1 year pro membership to whoever figures this out first! I'm trying to remember the name of an old 80's or 90's toy. Answered

Okay everyone, I have been trying to remember what these toys were called for the last couple of years.  They were in the 80's or 90's and could change from a vehicle into a base/battle station. I know I had a few of them.  The two that I remember are a tank that changed into a large base and a three-wheeled vehicle that changed into a gun turret thing (if memory serves me correctly). There was normally a switch or button to press and you would hear a loud gear/spring noise when they changed.  I know it was not a Transformer or GI Joe toy. They had small scaled human figures that were tan in color and a little larger than the figures that came with Technozoids (if anyone remembers those).  The figures were in the same "seated position" (for lack of a better way to describe it) as the Technozoid ones. As I said in the title, there will be a 1 year pro membership to whoever figures this out first!

Is this idea for a skateboard kite attachment practical or even a good idea? Answered

I was looking at some of the kite Ible's and had this random idea pop into my head about a way to attach a sail to a longboard to reduce arm fatigue and put more of the force directly on the board. I really don't know much about the physics or anything involved, but i would like to try this.  the image is a two minute MS paint picture to get my point across. shown is a two-tether design, but i assume this could easily be done with a multiple tether set up, and that might be better. Just throwing this out for ideas/comments/criticism.

What excellent examples in CAD of low drag coefficient pickup trucks exist that are available on the internet?

Vehicles have been designed to minimize the aerodynamic drag with notable success. Production candidate vehicles (such as Aptera, Twike, and Honda Insight) achieving drag coefficients of 0.25 down to 0.11. Solar Challenge vehicles have reached 0.07. Nose cone and fastback upper and sealed or faired lower body designs can achieve significant reductions in drag, and are worth attention. I am attempting to optimize a design for pickup trucks and cross-over utility (CUV) vehicles that are based on the same basic chassis design. Can anyone contribute designs, examples, or sources of information on optimized pickup design? BTW, I am simultaneously searching for a safe design that has the vehicle center of gravity at or below the axle height, as it should be to prevent roll-over accidents. Risk of injury and death are significantly higher in pickup trucks and CUVs than cars, and now pickups and CUVs account for more than 50% of new vehicle sales. This tragic fact needs to be reversed with safer design.
