AVG 8 sucks, I need a new antivirus program Answered

I started using Grisoft's AVG a couple weeks ago, and it was great. But version 8 is out now, and it is slooooow. I don't mean when it does scans that I initiate (I haven't done any yet anyway), but ever since I got it my computer freezes for a couple seconds every 5 minutes or so, it's really annoying. Also, there's ads on the "control center" screen. And if I disable the stupid linkscanner thingy (it doesn't work in Opera anyway), it shows a big exclmation mark on the system tray icon. Oh, and it takes about 5 seconds for the control center to come up from the system tray. AVG is slowing my whole system down. It may perform better on a more powerful machine, but I'm not going to upgrade just for an antivirus program. So I guess I need a new antivirus program, AVG is just too bloated now. NOT AVAST. I've used Avast before, and I hated it for a variety of reasons.

"So I guess I need a new antivirus program, AVG is just too bloated now. NOT AVAST. I've used Avast before, and I hated it for a variety of reasons." To the contrary it appears that you need a new computer.

I use AVG 8.0 Anti-Virus (I paid $39.99 for it) and it works so well in my Windows Vista system that I've disabled Windows Defender as there's no need to run it (and waste resources) when AVG 8.0 Anti-Virus is checking for spyware that's normally handled by Windows Defender. The software checks for bad downloads on-the-fly and except when it's doing a scheduled scan it doesn't slow things down a noticeable bit. The anti-virus feature is awesome with updates provided automatically several times a day.

"Also, there's ads on the "control center" screen." Pay for activation and the ads will go away, cheapskate.

Why would I pay for it just to get rid of the ads?

Then don't pay and view the pretty ads. Software manufacturers aren't in business to supply you with free software with no strings attached. If you won't pay for the software then the advertisers will, and you'll see their ads. You must be a lousy tipper.

if you have internet service from yahoo DSL/Highspeed
it come with FREE'' Norton antivirus

if you don't have that internet provider, then what is your ISP?

hope it helps!

"And if I disable the stupid linkscanner thingy (it doesn't work in Opera anyway), it shows a big exclmation mark on the system tray icon." You don't disable LnkScanner from inside AVG 8.0, but rather you disable the LinkScanner AddOns in both IE and Firefox. ALL Updates for AVG 7.5 will END on June 1, 2008.

No, you disable it in AVG. I never got any LinkScanner add-ons for IE or Firefox anyway.

If exclamation marks turn you on then do it your way.

"No, you disable it in AVG. I never got any LinkScanner add-ons for IE or Firefox anyway" When you install AVG 8.0 you will also be installing the LinkScanner (SafeSearch) Add-ons for IE and Firefox. For IE, go to and disable the "AVG Safe Search" add-on. For Firefox, and disble the "AVG Safesearch" add-on. Disabling the LinkScanner (Safesearch) from INSIDE AVG 8.0 WILL cause the exlamation mark to appear over the AVG icon.

# Download the AVG 8.0 Free Edition installation package from their website.
# Run the installation with the parameters /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSurf /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSearch. One way to achieve this is to:

  • save the AVG Free installation file directly to disk C:\
  • open menu Start -> Run
  • type
c:\avg_free_stf_*.exe /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSurf /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSearch

# The installation will be started, and AVG will be installed without the LinkScanner component.

YES - you put it twice - it was not a typo: Run the installation with the parameters: /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSurf /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSearch

...NOT AVAST. I've used Avast before, and I hated it for a variety of reasons...

Hmm, ok, each system is a bit different. I have been using it since my WIN95 miachine (I now have XP), and haven't had a problem with it. But it does have some issues with the kempinski virus checker; as in it doesn't play well with it.

Oh, DUH on me....I missed that one *adjusts glasses so that the trifocals are nearer the center* :-)
