Achiev'ibles - 21/11/2012 Answered

Picture of
I've been pretty busy recently, hence no updates. The script's still been ticking along automatically recording stats, until this week when it broke due to a bug in Instructables. Canucksgirl's helped me work around that and now it's fixed I thought I'd post an update.

For those that don't know, Achiev'ibles is an automatic patch giving effort. Sign up by commenting below and then every day your stats will be automatically collected. When you reach key milestones in total views, Instructables, comments, followers, following and more, you'll be rewarded with a patch to show your achievement.

Some fun facts:
- We now have 282 members
- This is my 100th forum topic! Yay!
- I improved the code to generate the below table of patches, it's now dead easy to get. If someone reminds/nags me every two weeks, I promise to post an update. Or I can let them know how to generate the table themselves and they can post the forum topic.

Here are the patches that have been automatically awarded in the last two week period, 07/11/2012 - 21/11/2012.

A version of this idea has been added to the site - if you hover your cursor over the small icons to the left of people's avatars in the comments, you will see medals that have been awarded.

No need to join anything, no need for patches, the medals are automatic.

To everyone asking to sign up, I'm sorry but I don't have the time or will to maintain this anymore. The code is available if someone competent wants to take over running it, it's mostly automated and only takes a few minutes a day when working properly. You'd need experience in Perl, MySQL and PHP.

Alternatively, email service@instructables.com and petition them to include automated achievement patches in the website functionality. Then everyone would benefit from it rather than the 2-300 members that have signed up here.

Thanks,

James

How would we start a petition?

would you be interested to join the petition too?

You should PM all 2-300 members and ask them to send the email too and mabye it will be an added feature!

I noticed this on other people's profiles and then I "inspectected element" and saw the achievements section as "hidden" and when I removed that it appeared on my page! (until I refreshed it)

So is the old patch list still used to hand out patches???....I guess  I've passed the 5k views mark, 5 best answers and some more....

If you passed those milestones before you joined the group, you won't get the patches. Your next ones are at 5 Instructables, 10K total views, 10 best answers, 100 comments etc.

I would love to join! One question though..............what happens if you had already passed a milestone before signing up? (as you had said, 10k views)

You can earn Achiev'ibles patches for milestones you reach AFTER you join. Any milestones you reach before joining do not count. Its an opt-in benefit. :-)

Now that we can see how many times an instructable has been favourited could that be another achievement category or would it be too hard to extract that data? (Sorry, I don't want to create more work for you. You are doing an awesome job already.)
